He means that the hippies couldn't move past the sixties, and so ruined the chance they were given to lead by clinging to the mindset of that era and not really agreeing on a coherent vision of the world.

How long did the argument about the band go on before people discussed the meaning of the song? Just listen to whatever you want to and who cares whether it's 'scene' or not. Personally I love FOB.
Ok, the song. I think the title says it all, to be honest. The 'scene' , I'm guessing they mean the emo scene, is just becoming an 'arms race' - who can put the same formula together fastest. if you take that theme, the rest of the lyrics fit it nicely.
Also, the lyrics "Don't really care/which side wins/Just so long as the room keeps singin/Thats just the bi'ness I'm in" seem to be saying 'We dont care who listens to our music, just as long as people do' |

For me, the song seems to be where one person in a relationship is a total closed book, and won't open up and shuts the other person out, but without realising it.
