Does anybody else get the sneaking suspicion he's talking about a man? there seem to be a few things that make it seem like something is off with this almost typical kind of love song. "Oh baby, oh MAN" "oh brother" "and it just don't make sense to me" & then of course there's the music video of him in drag... is that his "kind of woman"? Leave it to Mac demarco's genius lyrics to subtly hint at something without making anything clear either way... |

this song always reminds me of acid-accentuated separation anxiety. "where did my friends go? are they alright? why did they leave me? why am I not being included? and why am I stuck here waiting for them?"
It can be a bit terrifying, but also incredibly enlightening.
You start to notice so much more when you're alone. |

pretty sure it's "stone relief" not stoned belief, although that could just be my own stoned belief
Anyway, this is the perfect song to practice sun salutations with. smoke a little and do a few sun salutation cycles while listening, you will not be disappointed.

Love the way this connects to "Tipsy" as the morning after a night of drinking and casual sex, and now the girl (aka Tipsy) who apparently did end up coming back with Dave (oh HELL yeahh!!!) is just a scent on the sheets.. :-/ |

| Animal Collective – Banshee Beat Lyrics

I have to say I was a bit surprised to not see any interpretations similar to my own on the symbolism of the swimming pool. To me, the most important motifs in the lyrics are time (especially in terms of the transition from adolescence to adulthood) and water, which pops up in a few different contexts.
I think the song is about two childhood friends that only realize their romantic feelings for each other later in life, after having been in relationships with other people. The swimming pool has a double meaning. First, it represents the nostalgia of the friends' childhood days spent running through the woods, swimming/skipping or throwing rocks in lakes, finding abandoned houses or shacks to call their own secret spot, and just being innocent kids discovering life together. Second,it describes what we continually return to after failed relationships, the pool of potential romantic interests, all the OTHER fish in the sea if you will.
The two friends come to realize their mutual feelings for each other, but the timing is bad because the girl is already involved with someone else. The narrator kisses her anyway, complicating things for both of them. The girl's boyfriend knows that something is wrong because of the "new eyes" she has for her childhood friend and gets mad, loses interest in her quickly and gossips about what happened.
This presumably leaves the narrator and his friend in a place where they can be together in bliss right? But for whatever reason (the narrator is still pondering) it doesn't work out.
Possible reasons: swimming in the pool of people and sex and relationships for too long has corrupted both parties' sense of trust and longevity as a long term possibility, leading to paranoia about the relationship that makes the narrator "need a shower" or want to just "duck out and find the swimming pool". In other words, he saw himself how easily a relationship could fall apart when he kissed his friend and made her go astray from her current interest, so why couldn't it happen again? so then why go through all this pain just to reach that result again after so much has been invested?
Do we extend ourselves romantically just because "feeling is good"? because we're driven by biological needs for companionship and sexual expression? do we compromise and "give a little" just for the sake of getting "a little bit"? and what exactly is the point if in the end it's only temporary, and we'll end up burning all the letters and notes and reminders of past lovers along with our connections to them? of course any time AC says "fry" i have to assume there's more than one meaning there haha
I am reminded of the "guy who tosses typewriter" scene from Richard Linklater's film Slacker where the pissed off ex-boyfriend quotes James Joyce's Ulysses:
"If he had smiled why would he have smiled? To reflect that each one who enters imagines himself to be the first to enter whereas he is always the last term of a preceding series even if the first term of a succeeding one, each imagining himself to be first, last, only and alone whereas he is neither first nor last nor only nor alone in a series originating in and repeated to infinity." |

| Animal Collective – Brother Sport Lyrics

I have a twin brother named Matt who was 5150'd in a mental hospital this past summer. In some ways I feel like I've turned my back on him instead of supporting him when he really needed it and this song makes me feel guilty...
But I think one aspect of this song that nobody has touched on is that to help your brother "you got to weigh what he said to help you shape the way you play." Basically, if you have a brother that is going through severe depression, it's never going to be a straight path and he's always trying to turn it into a game that you can't win.
Right now my brother is at home, but he doesn't have many friends and spends most of his time hanging out with our dad. I really don't know what he's going to do without him in his life when we reach the situation that this song describes. Maybe this song will help him, maybe it won't. Either way the song is therapeutic to me. |

I agree with MyDearWatson. Some might dismiss this as mysoginistic, but the "bitches" Dre is referring to are really just the people in his life that turned on him or stabbed him in the back. Not all women are bitches, and some men (like Eazy-E according to Dre) are bitches too. This song is about the same stuff as thousands of other songs: not letting people that want to bring you down get in your way. Because they aren't really shit to begin with. |

This song sticks out so much on the album. But it rocks so hard! Anyway, I think chronologically, this song would actually come between Halo of Nembutals and With Twilight as my guide. No offense EvaporatedBrock, but I think you're reading WAY too much into this. This song deals with the part of the story where the main character has kidnapped his girlfriend's father and he is torturing the father for information on his daughter. Where is the devil waiting?? The main character basically tortures the father by eating parts of him everyday. This is what makes the chorus lyrics so ironic. They don't have any food in the prison that the guy created to hold his girlfriend's father, but he survives by eating chunks of his captor. Thus, "I'll magnify a hole... (in your abdomen)"
IMO the most bad ass part is "I've got the weight of half the world..." and on because the lyrics alternate from the main character to the father. The father is screaming for help "Don't stop dragging the lake, don't stop looking for me" and the captor is basically saying "yeah, you're powerless, this isn't going to end until your daughter comes back to me"
Anyway, the most difficult part of this song to understand are the weird verses. I think the main point of them is that this main character thinks that he is some sort of prophet from ancient times destined to carry out this revenge against his cheating girlfriend. This is referenced again later during Luciforms when Cedric says "Like the Pharaohs of old, bury me in gold". Basically, the guy is totally crazy... |

rape zombie is more about creeps who drug women in bars or wait for them to get extremely drunk so they can date rape them (eventually leading to a girl dying in the song) but it's also about how the women choose to drink and act really loose... atleast it felt that way when i saw them on warped tour. Matt introduced the song by talking about how "Their are zombies in this world, and those zombies are looooose" something to that effect... |

i agree with No One Really because the songs are similar. a lot of the songs on this album talk about drugs and partying. this one is basically the story of someone being on the verge of an OD and everybody else being too high or selfish to care. The person is afraid they're going to die so they "pray for safe passage through the night" and hope that they survive until morning. It seems like this might be an experience that would change the person's drug habits and lead them to living healthier and taking care of themselves, but Matt calls the addiction an "endless search" and it doesn't seem like there is much chance for change or improvement because they sold their souls to their addictions. |

If anyone really wants to understand this song. It's about masturbation. Don't laugh. The narrator is thinking about a girl that he used to love and thinking about her on the beach. Fantasizing about her and masturbating makes him feel better. I'm not going to try to prove my point. Just look at the lyrics and understand. |

MEANING: the narrator of the song was beaten and forced to give oral sex to someone. this someone is probably a jock because of the "work out bench" line. I think it's a possibility that the narrator actually likes the man who abused him but a lot of the things in this song are sarcastic or cynical. "Fabulous Muscles" is definitely sarcastic because after the narrator is forced into fellatio he feels like dying "place my ashes in a vase..." The first line is also pretty sarcastic. Or you could interpret the first line as saying that getting beaten up wasn't bad at all compared to the humiliation of the forced blowjob. sad song man... |

just for anyone else who still struggles with the story of this album i wanted to point out a couple things that i found significant. first off, unless im wrong, all of the people that frances turns to for help are women: the widow? l'via, miranda, and finally cassandra. another thing that i noticed was all of the mentions of bugs/snakes coming out of people's bodies. when i read all of this i connected it to the movie Eraserhead where worms fall from him every time that he does something bad. and they start to grow when his baby starts to get worse and he starts to cheat on his wife. i don't know if this is really connected at all but Eraserhead seems like something that TMV would be fans of... |

when he talks about her "ionizing and atomizing" i think he's saying how it's like she's with him one moment and then kind not really with him the next. she's solid sometimes but others she's more like a projection. she does not feel as strongly towards him as he does towards her. she is his sunlight but gradually she is disappearing and being replaced by less pure or artificial lights. this makes him feel empty inside. this is exactly how i feel right now but then i listened to Space Travel Is Boring and feel a little better. |

does anyone else think this could be a concept album? A lot of it seems to be centered around the ocean or a journey on the ocean. Even if in dashboard its talking about car dashboards all of the lyrics could just be about coming to terms with your relationships with people in a place where you really have to work together (a ship) I think everyone agrees that this song is basically about the cycle of life. but then it also talks about dissatisfaction with authority of whatever kind and trying to get by with the odds stacked against you. anyway im a pretty noob modest mouse fan i dont know if any of there other albums are concept albums. |

the first four songs on this cd are alternating between view points of two very different people. this song heartache is from the point of view of a person who is completely tired and fed up with religion and blames all of their problems on it. on hellbound it switches over to the view point of a person who is pro religion and wants to have everyone believe in what they do. it then switches back to the first person on sacrifice and switches again on vengeance where the pro religion person wants to kill all these sinners. im not sure about the rest of the album but im pretty sure this is what they were going for on the first four tracks. |

i guess its supposed to be a tribute to joseph merrick but also i think it wraps up the blood mountain story. I think that the character reaches the top of the mountain. puts the crystal skull in the hands of that moosey "three horned face" at the top and then i think he dies happy and relieved of his burden. Siberian Divide ends with the character determined to make it to the top and i think the overall tone of pendulous skin is of having a great weight lifted off of you. |

no dude i wasn't being sarcastic at all. now i feel hell of stupid... I also didn't think of the main character as a werewolf but i guess that makes perfect sense too. I mean he doesn't have to be a werewolf, he could just be someone whos kind of hypocrytical or bi polarish and this is his punishment. I don't think there is much more to explain in this song except i think that the wolf is loose video is very accurate to the story and sets up how the guy becomes tied to this journey. Maybe hes curious to get the crystal skull as treasure but when performing that ritual at the end he becomes cursed with the task of taking it to the top.
The sickest part is the verse with "the touch is cold" verse where it sounds like mortal kombat souls screaming past your eardrums... SO AWESOME! |

if you look at the picture for the capillarian crest single its pretty obvious that the capillarian crest is your heart where all the arteries, veins and capillaries come from so the beginning of this song is kind of like colony of birchmen where the characters heart has gone away. Basically at this point in the album i thinkthat the guy has found the crystal skull and without going to their concert i wouldn't have really known this but i think the skull has posessed him or hes just become obsessed with it. ("mind control has left its nest" on sleeping giant) anyway his hearts not really in it but he has to go on. Im not sure about all the lyrics, but i think the last verse is the circle of cysquatch deciding how the characters journey will go and how Blood Mountain will test him.
p.s. did anyone know blood mountain's a real place in Georgia? |
