The Airborne Toxic Event – Gasoline Lyrics 12 years ago
I agree that it is about THE girl. He is clearly with a new women now "And she'll step away". But he still thinks about the girl. They dated when they were 17. And then there was a chance at 21, probably to move in together or get married but he left. He thought it was too serious and the commitment scared him (maybe she got pregnant or was ready to get more serious)
"I wasn't having any fun
And the words you said
Tore through my head"
And he wishes he showed up and told her to get into the car, but he didn't. Everything else has just been an imitation and he can't move on cause her memory burns "like gasoline".

I think we all have stories that we can relate too. It is really an awesome song.

Third Eye Blind – Another Life Lyrics 12 years ago
I just heard a friend from high school died and I had this cd in my car. Normally I forget about this song, but listening to it in the context really changed my mind.

I agree with everyone's comments, but could it also be about dealing with the loss of a loved one? The references about another life could mean that his life changed when that person died. There are a lot of references that could be about another person dying "I'm grateful to whistle past a grave yard gate".

Probably just thinking about my friend, but it kind of fits.

Bouncing Souls – Lean On Sheena Lyrics 13 years ago
So i have long loved bouncing souls, but i just recently heard this song. it is now one of my fav of their songs.

Just looking at the song it is about Sheena trying to leave an abusive relationship with the help of her friend she gets the courage and money to leave for good rather than just running to the corner bar. the music video is a little more specific.

If you see the video is seems about being a friend to Sheena who has an abusive father
"Did you intimidate her?
Her mother says you wouldn't let her use the phone
Or were you intoxicated?
Past the point of knowing what was going on"

The story line of the video is that the friend helps her get money to leave, probably for good, the course changes from
"Better yet, don't forget
Leave the keys on the TV set
Hoping your gone for the corner bar
Here we are after dark
Knocking back the makers mark
Scrounging up the dollars from my buddys car"

to: "Better yet, don't forget
Grab your keys off the TV set
Saying goodbye to the corner bar
Not a friend til the end
No, she's never coming back again
Know what's on my mind and in my heart"

So Sheena used to run to the corner bar but now is leaving for good. and the friend who helped her get the money (by selling his records in the video) is the scourging up the dollars from my buddy's car. So she says goodbye to the corner bar, and though he was a great friend Sheena was not a friend to the end because she had to leave.

anyways the song is both sad and awesome. check out the music video for sure. it shows the story really well.

The Gaslight Anthem – "45" Lyrics 13 years ago
So i get this emails and was mad i couldn't make the trip to jersey to be in this video. that said this song is amazing. it makes me happy that gaslight is moving away from their american slang sound (which wasn't that great) and back to their senior and the queen sound (which are 4 of the best songs ever).

The song is clearly about him trying to get over a girl. It is about being locked in your room singing along to your favorite songs. it reminds me of eve 6's open road song, where he pours his heart out to the radio.

At first he is trying to express his pain "Have you seen my hands? Just look at 'em shake". But then he plays the song again and talks to it. He says that he tried to get back with her "And I danced with your ghost, Oh, but that ain't the way, I can't move on and I can't stay the same".

As already stated his "friends" are the 45 records. They tell him to move on. So it is his struggle between wanting to get back with her and his better sense "I used to hear when she would sleep in my arms
But "better sense" says:"

Over all great song. Totally back to the gaslight sound we all fell in love with.

Hey jealousy is probably my favorite song ever and Gaslight is my favorite band ever. This could really be their "hey jealousy", that truth we all know of wanting something that is already gone.

The Gaslight Anthem – High Lonesome Lyrics 14 years ago
I can't believe I missed that one! As much as I listen to Billy Joel I should have caught it. But if it is a reference to PIano Man then that is totally adding to my point about them trying to make it big in music. The song Piano Man is suppose to be about Joel before he made it big, and how he was too talented to be stuck in a bar "they sit at the bar and put bread in my jar, and say man what are you doing here?"

Everclear – Sunflowers Lyrics 14 years ago
Everyone brings up good points, but I am thinking that even though Art is writing the song that maybe it is not really that much about a time line. I actually think it might be about his brother. But maybe it is about him talking to people long after his brother died.
I think that it is about him recalling his brother and trying to figure everything out, now that he is an adult. His brother was young when he died so when he looks at pictures he sees how he looked when he was a younger man as well. So he is relating to his brother from both a younger kid looking up to his brother and also as an older adult who know has wisdom he wish he could share. My main reason for this is that it mentions "shaky hands", a sign of drug use/withdrawal. Also "I would die when you smiled" is so true for a little brother who wants to impress his big brother. Lastly, so much of the song is talking about a memory "I remember it all".
One more point is that Art had issues himself so the line about it running in the family really makes me think that it has to be about someone in his family.

Our Lady Peace – Are You Sad? Lyrics 14 years ago
I'm so glad people have already posted what he says in the intro to the live version. I first heard the song on the live album so I kinda already knew what the band meant it to be about. This song means so much to me, it is the song I have played on my worst days and a song I hear inside my head when I see someone who is going through a hard time. I mean it is so real and so raw the way he asks "Are you sad, are you holding yourself, Are you locked in your room?". It gives you the impression that even though it is from the friends point of view, that the friend has been there too. Cause I mean haven't we all been there? Seriously the most underrated song of all time. <3 OLP

Third Eye Blind – Wounded Lyrics 14 years ago
Ok so I am a 3eb fan, but I never got into this song until like today. I think it is because I didn't like it that much when I first got the cd, which was years ago. So today for the first time in forever I really listened to it. Now that I'm older this song means so much to me, cause when I was younger I had no experience with it, now after college I know all too well how women react to abuse or sexual assault. But as for the song,
I don't think it matters really why the girl is wounded. I feel that it is from abuse or sexual assault, but it could be from something else, like emotional abuse or a hate crime, like kavonbor mentions. The "bruises that you feel will heal" does not have to be physical, but I think they might be both. And as most people have said I do think it is about Stephan dealing with a friend who is trying to deal with this trauma. I don't think he is critizing "Your pissed off poets, your women's groups" I think he is just saying that they are not the only ones who care. And even though he doesn't understand, which is what I think he means by "Well I never claimed to understand, What happens after dark". Its lik no one can really understand but it doesn't mean they can't be there for you.
"But my fingers catch sparks at the thought of touching you" is an amazing line. I remember one of my friends got beat up by her bf, when my friends and I later found out we wanted to jump him. I mean thats how we felt. And I just feel like it is such a real feeling.
Lastly I like how he is telling her to be proud. "You tell them, that's just my battle scar". That is my favorite part of the song. Because even though he is a guy, and I think its harder for them to understand sexual assault, but him telling her to her to just have her scars and wear them with pride, I think that is the best advice to give someone about any trauma. Also "Till you're walking down shaking that ass again, And then you walk on baby walk on" is part of that. Like be proud to be a woman and rock it.
Anyways I love these lyrics but it is really the music that makes it deep. It reminds me of motorcycle drive by. I think this song is a good one to play for anyone who is going through a hard time with a friend. Also reminds me of "Are you Sad?" by Our Lady Peace, which is also about trying to be there for a friend.

Jimmy Eat World – 12.23.95 Lyrics 14 years ago
Ok so i've heard this is the boys view of "Christmas Card". because i am a music nerd i looked up a calender from 1995. the date 12.23.95 is a Saturday meaning that Christmas was on Monday meaning that Tuesday morning would be when Christmas was over. "start over tuesday morning" could mean that when Christmas is over then can start again? Idk I just had to try and figure out what Tuesday morning meant and it is weird that it seems to fit with "Christmas Card". So my theory is that something happens over the Christmas card and the couple either breaks up or gets into a fight and nothing will be ok until after the holiday is over. Because though the 23rd is before Christmas the song "12.23.95" seems to be written as an apology after Christmas. So the fight was on Saturday the 23rd and then the guy leaves "didn't mean to leave you all alone" on Christmas and comes back to say sorry the day after Christmas, Tuesday.
Let me know if that makes any sense =]
(you have to listen to both songs for this to make sense)

Jimmy Eat World – Invented Lyrics 14 years ago
hey stumoo i just commented on your "movielike" comment, but also to say it here i sort of disagree with you. like mostly because of the music. i'm telling out the end of "invented" is just to happy sounding, its like a fast being heart when you see someone you love. it doesn't make sense it just ended. also "movielike" comes first. so maybe "invented" is what happens after. idk just my thoughts

Jimmy Eat World – Movielike Lyrics 14 years ago
I just read your comment to "invented". Parts of it really do fit, but the end of "invented" makes me wonder. because the tempo becomes quick the the musicmore exciting, it feels like a heart racing and seeing someone. So maybe "invented" is the response? Idk maybe I just see the idea they get together in "invented" and can't let that go. But just when you listen to the song thats how it feels. This song is quick the whole way through and makes it feel like the girl doesn't care that much about the break up? Just my thoughts on how its not all about the lyrics.

omg your comment was amazing. I totally didn't catch the thing about Houston street even though i know thats a common mistake people make. The only thing is I don't think option 2 makes more sense, i think your option 1 makes the most sense cause he lives in her debt. And also the tempo of the song going up beat is meant to make your heart race, like when you see someone you love. The music makes option 1 (the happier one lol) seem correct. Just thought i'd give my thoughts.

Ace Enders – Body Like Mind Lyrics 14 years ago
I always kinda wondered if the song was about the fact that Ace was the soul of The Early November. Like is the song really about how he got them famous and he is who "who paid to get us here." Just a thought.
Also what does "The story of my life, is I got bones" mean? Is it like saying he has guts or balls or just strength? It seems to fit with the idea that he is saying he is self made.

The Gaslight Anthem – Meet Me by the River's Edge Lyrics 14 years ago
Ok you make some good points but these could just as easily NOT be references to Springsteen. The Bobby Jean one is def, but the rest could easily just be similar. I mean "Pounding sweat beneath these wheels" does sound like a mechanic but not really a reference to Springsteen's "The Promised Land". It could be but I feel like its a stretch. Everyone just looks for references to Springsteen so they see them, sometimes when they aren't there.
Amazing song though.

I have to agree with everyone who said that the song is about the Jersey music scene. I saw them live and he made a comment to everyone is the crowd from Jersey right before he played this song. The only thing I don't get is the Maria vs Virginia thing. Maria is there every girl, as it is the same in Counting Crows songs (who they reference) and other bands, though I don't know if its cause Maria is a common name or just sounds good in songs. But gaslight also uses Virginia in Casanova, Baby. So maybe its just that Maria is the every girl and Virginia is the girl he loves. I don't know but I have always wondered. I would say Virginia is a reference to the state but they don't seem to have any connection other than the east coast/ mid atlantic one.

The Gaslight Anthem – High Lonesome Lyrics 14 years ago
I think the song is about dealing with the clash of dreams and reality. The speaker is in love Maria and thats why he wants to look like Elvis (Counting Crows say she is looking for a boy who looks like Elvis) and also has the double meaning of him wanting to be famous. I think thats why he feels bad when Maria turns to drugs "And the powder on the bar was just this one time, The powder on the bar was just this one night, Only to get by". By the whole idea is that one of them (or both) wants to make it as a musician "Was your heart in 4/4 time" means that their heart is music. And the whole thing is that the dream is not working out but he wants it to "And in my head there's all these classic cars, And outlaw cowboy bands". Also the reference to "Souther Accents" has double meaning, one is Maria is homesick for the south and also that Tom Petty is someone who has the life the speaker wants "I always kinda sorta wish I'm someone else". That is the same as the reference to Springsteen "And at night I woke up, With the sheets soaking wet, It's a pretty good song, Maybe you know the rest" it means both that he is feeling that way and also that he wishes he was Springsteen. As for the end I am not sure what the high and lonesome sound means. It probably is a reference to bluegrass but I think it also means this empty sound, like how life is empty without a dream.
Lastly I read a review a while ago that mentions the honesty of gaslight's lyrics. Reading the lyrics does not do the line "I always kinda sorta wish I'm someone else" justice. When you hear it it really seems like some sort of confession you would only say to a close friend. Oh gaslight is totally amazing! I really love the idea of the heart being in 4/4 time. Totally a great line!

Gaslight anthem makes a ton of references but this one has always been my favorite. I love the song Hallelujah and I love how gaslight makes the understated reference, like you don't notice it the first time you listen to the song. Anyways an amazing song to say the least.

The Gaslight Anthem – Senor and the Queen Lyrics 14 years ago
Seriously this song is amazing. actually everything gaslight does is but this ep is the best cd I've ever bought and I think if you don't own it you need to buy is asap. That said I think this song is about him trying to get a girl to forget about her past lovers and just have fun tonight and dance. She seems to hear a song a think about a boy "And in every sad, sad country song,
Is there a little bitty piece of 'em still hanging on?" and he is saying to bury the past and move on. Over all this isn't the best lyrics but the song is amazing. I actually don't see many references in this song, most gaslight songs reference a ton of other songs, but the thing about Met Loaf is interesting and I never knew it.

The Wallflowers – Three Marlenas Lyrics 15 years ago
I agree with most people, as in the idea that is about three aspect/hopes/choices a woman could make. My favorite part, that no one really commented on is "There's got to be someone we can trust, Out here among us" which makes me think it is about making a commitment to one and trying to figure out which one is right.
We can all relate to this because we all long for things that don't always go together (like how its fun to be single and also amazing to have someone special). We can't have everything we want. And at some point in time you have to make a decision about what you want most. So for Marlena does she was excitement/attention, stability, or freedom/a journey?
On a person note, as a student about to graduate this is a perfect anthem cause I don't know what path to take next. Maybe I'll just pick a star in the night?

Carbon Leaf – What about everything? Lyrics 15 years ago
Ok i defiantly have to agree with several people here. I think this song is awesome because it fits into so many situations. I love the idea about him driving around and coming home for the first time in a while and I like Kefka's comment about it being a teenager drafted, but I think it is pretty obvious this song is about a college student.
First off a lot of people seem to be students and I am one so you'll get what a huge transition college is. They are a group that formed in college so they know how it is to go home after being gone all semester.
Second he mentions that it is about a break. "Holiday quiet on these streets, except for some stubborn leaves,
That didn't fall with the fall" This is talking about the season being fall. Then Thanksgiving break makes sense because of "In search of some rest, in search of a break. From a life of tests where something's always at stake".
Third I think he realizes that school is not the biggest deal in the world and thinks about how he could be in the military. "I find it hard to complain when compared with"... then "What about soldier battle scars, And all the anger that they eat?".
Fourth, I do think there is a girl involved but thats not the focus of the song. It is just another thing he is thinking about.
Lastly, "What about that midnight phone call... The one that wakes you from your peace?" I think that is a phone call you COULD get. Like that someone you know has been killed in a car accident or something. Think about how midnight phone calls are never good.
Personal, I go to school 6 hours away from my house. This is the first time I have ever heard a song that sums up how I feel about Thanksgiving break, which is normally my first time home all semester. So I do think about everything while I'm alone in the car. And I am about to make that drive and just heard this song and it fits so perfectly.
So thats my opinion. I also agree with the message. Because its about being thankful to soldiers and thankful in general for everything.
"I am not in need"

ok well i see this song as a kid leaving the house and all like that, but not killing himself. "walked out to the waiting car outside". though u could say that its talking about when he is with his friend, but i think he leaves for good. its a coming of age song and every teen and basically everyone can relate. i love this song and less than jake!

this song reminds me of my friend who i have gone out with like five times and we keep going on and off. like it seems to be about a boy saying he is seriously in love with a girl and the girl liek laughing at him. and she is going slow and he is just don't hesitate. and that is sort of the story with me and this boy, so i really liek this song. and its totally amazing.
