Of Monsters And Men – Little Talks Lyrics 13 years ago
Logged in for the first time in years just for this song. It might be due to just playing through “Dear Esther” on Steam, but I’m convinced that this song is about a couple, one of whom is deceased, and the other is coping with the death. Long story short — the man is dead, and the woman is still living in their home and debating what to do. As a ghost, the man is trying to reach out to the woman and comfort her. A few key parts:

First stanza — she’s talking about being uncomfortable in what was their home, now alone, and he’s essentially haunting it in an attempt to be close to her. As a new ghost, maybe he’s not very good at that, and his activity in the home is making the stairs creak, etc., and frightening her.

“It’s killing me to see you this way.” A fun play on words, since he’s already dead!

“Though the truth may vary this ship will carry our bodies safe to shore.” I take this as a spin on the River Styx and being ferried across. The truth that varies could be different beliefs about what happens after death; basically it’s saying that the truth of life after death might vary depending on who you ask, but somehow they are going to “cross over” the final river.

Second stanza — I have a few thoughts here. Depending on when I listen to the song, I think the woman is either considering moving away from the home, staying to wait to die, or contemplating suicide to join her love in death. Then again, I can also see it as a conversation now between three parties — the silent third person is maybe a visiting friend that they are both talking to — the woman is talking about burying him (or herself, again depending on theory) and moving on, but struggling to do so, since he’s trying to reach out to her. The man is trying to talk to the third party (“Tell her that I miss our little talks”) and explain himself.

Bridge: They both watched the other disappear — him as he died and moved on, her as she watched him die. The ghost of him that is left, is literally, his ghost. Her ghost, on the other hand, is the shadow of herself that she’s become living in the home alone, withdrawn, and haunted by him. Torn apart with nothing we can do = can’t control death.

“Let me go, we’ll meet again soon” — sung by both, again almost a plea to let each one of them carry on in their own existences — him so he can rest in peace rather than haunt her, her so she can stop holding on to his death and actually live her life. But as soon as they start to consider this, the best line of the song kicks in — “Wait, wait, wait for me, please hang around — I’ll see you when I fall asleep!”

They loved each other so much they can’t exist, even in separate planes, without each other. Depending on what theory you chose above, a few things could be happening here.
1 — She is accepting that he’s gone, asking him to wait for her in whatever afterlife, and planning to literally dream about him at night to cope.
2 — She’s dying, “falling asleep into death”
3 — She’s committing suicide to join him, again sleep = death

Ok, I'm shutting up now, I swear. Sorry for the huge post! Great song, can definitely be interpreted a variety of ways!

Metric – Rock Me Now Lyrics 19 years ago
I'm pretty sure the lyrics are "They hammered the soil asking for answers in green" instead of "cream." :)

As far as what it means - I picture the narrator and the girl sitting in a diner, talking. The first verse is more of their discussion, while the second and third make me think of the narrator telling bits of her own life story, but wrapping them up as stories to detach. Then again, sometimes I think it's just two people telling stories that they've heard here or there.

Then, not to sound like every relationship-blathering like so many others on here, but the metaphor in the second verse makes me think of a proposal gone wrong. "She found a man to treasure" - they're in a relationship. "Late on shallow evenings...etc" - they're doing things together, trying to find some larger meaning to their lives. "His value declined when he offered his name" - he becomes less appealing to her when he proposes, which would traditionally be giving her his name.

Great song - glad to see that the history of internment camps isn't entirely lost. It makes me sad when I bring up the subject with others and they don't know what I'm talking about - amazing how the history books often neglect to do much more than mention the camps.

Ditto on the timing issue, L-Kyne. Very haunting song. I think a lot of it is directly related to the idea of fame and losing touch and connections with those that you held dearly before, but I also think that it can be varied to other more "realistic" situations.

Ratatat – Seventeen Years Lyrics 19 years ago
Excellent song, and like Shining Eyes said, awesome without lyrics. This whole album for Ratatat is excellent, and I've heard that they're quite good live!

Pink – Runaway Lyrics 19 years ago
This song strikes home to me, if only for the fact that it's exactly where I was at when I was 15 (some time ago...). Well thought out song about what goes through the head of a runaway, or someone who is even contemplating running away. Otherwise pretty self-explanatory, I think.

"Keep your drink, just give me the money," is a line I may have to start using more often. Excellent comeback to the horndogs that scour the bars just to get laid!

Pink – Leave Me Alone (I'm Lonely) Lyrics 19 years ago
While I think this song could just be about commitment, I think it's more about having someone that horns in on your life so much that it becomes intolerable. "Give me some room, there will be room enough for two" - this to me sums it all up the best. Even in a relationship with someone that is wonderful and that you love dearly (friend or lover), you can't spend every minute together - eventually you'll drive one another crazy! This is reiterated by "I don't want to wake up with another, but I don't want to always wake up with you either." Sometimes some time alone is what a person really needs, and if their significant other is constantly hanging around and not giving them that space, it can choke the relationship pretty quick.

On an off note - "Cuttin' off the phone, leave me the f*** alone, tomorrow I'll be begging you to come home," is my favorite line in this song - not to sound like every teeny-bopper on here, but it sums up a short-lived relationship that I went through perfectly.
