Yes it's an amazing song, and gives you hope that things can really be different. (I'm writing this the day after THE inauguration!) On a par with Asa'a "Fire on the Mountain". |

It's great to hear an artist with a brilliant voice singing lyrics as good as this. Living in Scotland, I can relate the words to here too; lots of issues that people get angry about, but nobody does anything. Then when these things affect us personally we will complain that somebody should have done something about it. I think her songs should be compulsory listening for all politicians. |

I'm sure I read somewhere that it was about a case of child murder or abuse - maybe the Bulger case, maybe not, but it's abut the feelings engendered by hearing about anything like this; how can we, as human beings, inflict this on others. The pain of realising this kind of thing happens, and the fear that people are becoming more desensitized to other people's pain. "How could you hurt a child, Now does this make you satisfied?" It's a very human reaction to very inhumane events. |

I haven't listened to this for ages, but when I first heard it, Calysto's version was exactly what I thought. I think it's about hope that when reaching adulthood, you will have some control over your life and not just put up with whatever is thrown at you by those who have more power than you. It sounds a very angry song to me. |

I don't think it's about prositutes at all. If Moik (first comment) is quoting a real interview, then I think that makes the most sense. He was affected by a real experience, and did what poets did, i.e. wrote aout it. The last bit "We weren't lovers like that, ...." is a lovely line, which demonstrates a really good attitude to life. He appreciated his experience with these women, but understands that other people's experience might be different. |

Why have there been so few responses to Mikus-Fikus, who posted his comments 9 months ago? Leonard Cohen is a poetic genius; I don't care how he appears on film, he has given many many people a lot of pleasure over a lot of years. You seem a very angry person, Mikus Fikus. Hope you feel better soon. |

I loved reading everyone's interpretaitions of this song - it is one of those songs you think you understand and then when you listen to it again there is a line that doesn't fit in with your ideas. Malsum, I think, has worked it out. Having been born just a few years after Leonard Cohen, I can relate to the ideas predominant in young people in the 60s. (Free love was not really about having sex with anyone you wanted; there were more serious, ethical issues about not owning anyone.) When he writes this letter to Famous Blue Raincoat, I think he is expressing the fact that he has come to terms with the feelings of rage and jealousy that conflicted with what he THOUGHT he should be feeling. He has, as Malsum says, recognized that 'his' woman was made happy by another man, and can now (a long time after the events but still emotionally involved with her) accept that this was not the end of the world. |

I first heard this song on Radio Luxembourg sung, not by the Turtles, but by someone called Graham Bonney. For a while this version and the one by the Turtles competed for chart place, and the Turtles won. I became a Turtles fan, buying other singles ("You Know What I Mean", "My Girl"), and then persuaded my mother - I was 14 at the time - to buy me the "Happy Together" album. I still love Howard's sexy voice! Happy Together is just a LOVE SONG. |

I live in Scotland, and unforturnately, because of the "special relationship" the UK is supposed to have with the US, and the power the US has globally, I am affected by the deciisions your politicians make, whether I like it or not. (And at the moment I don't like it). I have no voting rights, of course, in your country, so am powerless to change anything. I think the Dixie Chicks are amazing musically and incredibly courageous to state their opinions, which they must have known would alienate some of their fans. The song is great and they were totally right to record it. I hope those who threatened them will experience at least some guilt and understand that what they did was incredibly cowardly, and, as freedom of speech is supposed to be a fundamental right in the US, also incredibly unpatriotic.` |
