Rise Against – The Good Left Undone Lyrics 15 years ago
I dunno, this all seems clear to be, but after getting a blank stare from my GF at mention of the Tuareg, I've come to realise my baseline for people is probably really warped.

The Tuareg, btw are a nomadic berber people of the sahara. But I'm sure you knew that already!

:D

Rise Against – The Good Left Undone Lyrics 15 years ago
*sigh* A love song? Really? This is what I get for expecting smarts from people!

It seems to me that this song is about a person “waking up” to the fact that we’re killing our planet. The person is dealing with the changes this means in his(or her) lifestyle and the gratitude they feel for the person who helped them wake up and gave them some direction for helping instead of killing the planet.

Here's my interpretation, (almost) line by line.
----------------
In fields where nothing grew but weeds,
--“the field” is the planet/nature as a whole. Also note that “weeds” are really just plants we just have a use for.

I found a flower at my feet, Bending there in my direction,
--There’s some damn cool and/or useful stuff in nature!

I wrapped a hand around its stem, I pulled until the roots gave in,
--Our instinct, as humans, is to domesticate or use or exploit what we find in nature that we think is cool or useful, without much thought for the consequences. The flower as a whole is a metaphor for the effect our modern lives and conveniences are having on the planet

Finding now what I’ve been missing,
--You gotta admit it, our modern conveniences are pretty darn nifty!

But I know. So I tell myself, I tell myself its wrong.
--… but they have consequences. Cars release in c02 in levels the atmosphere can’t process Shopping malls are build where forests used to be. There’s an island composed of waste plastic in the pacific the size of Texas. The asphalt in cities creates heat bubbles that change weather patterns. Those last two are crazy if you think about it.

There’s a point we pass from which we can’t return.
--We, as a society, have gotten so reliant on our consumption of resources that it’s hard, DAMN hard to stop.

I felt the cold rain of the coming storm.
--but if we don’t some scary shit is gonna happen. Real scary.

All because of you
--And the narrator is aware of it all because someone helped him/her wake up

I haven’t slept in so long.
--Seriously. It’s some scary shit that’s gonna happen.

When I do I dream of drowning in the ocean, Longing for the shore where I can lay my head down,
--With melting icecaps lost of well populated coast lines will be under water.

I’ll follow your voice, All you have to do is shout it out.
--Seriously scary shit. When you find out, you’re desperate to find out what you can do to stop it.

Inside my hands these petals brown, Dried up, falling to the groun, But it was already too late now.
--We simply can’t keep going as we are without making the planet uninhabitable.

I push my fingers through the earth, Return this flower to the dirt, So it can live.
--We’ve GOT to stop. Our living is contingent upon the planet living.

I walk away now.
--So what do we do as individuals? We stop consuming. We give up our cars, we give up our TVs. We walk away from all that. Long term, we vote for politicians who can make a difference, we spend our money on products made by “green” companies. But, if it is too late, what can we do but walk away from the modern American life?

But I know… Not a day goes by that I don’t feel it’s GONE.
--But damn that would suck. I like my computer, and my car’s handy. If I gave them up, I’d sure feel their lack every god damn day.
--And yes, the line is "gone," not "spurn" :P

There’s a point we pass from which we can’t return.
--…and if something doesn’t change, we’ll all have to.

All because of you, I haven’t slept in so long. When I do I dream of drowning in the ocean,
Longing for the shore where I can lay my head down,
--Covered above

Inside these arms of yours.
--It feels makes you feel helpless, being told the way you live is killing the world. You either deign it, desperately, despair, or try to fix it. No matter what, you’re child-like and children want the comfort of those that love them.

All because of you, I believe in angels. Not the kind with wings, No, not the kind with halos,
--And in the midst of it all, if someone tells you that you CAN do something about it, think if how grateful that makes you?

The kind that bring you home, When home becomes a strange place.
--When you learn that your actions are killing the planet, it shatters your world view. It changes everything. Your world does become a strange place. Instead of being someone who never hurt anyone, you suddenly and unwittingly become this super villain that is slowing destroying the world! BWA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA!!!!!!
--Now if someone can help you through that, show you want you can do to help, you can go back to being the good guy. Everyone one wants to be the good guy in their life story; that’s the natural state of humanity; its home. If someone brought you back to that and gave you hope again, you’d call them an angel too.

I’ll follow your voice, All you have to do is shout it out.
--and you’d do what they said to do to fix it also.

The thing I love about this song is how emotionally complex it is. The person is scared as shit, they can’t sleep, it’s clearly because of someone, but somehow, their grateful? It’s wonderful. And it fits the general RA ethos. To quote other songs “From that moment I refused to close my eyes anymore” and “If to live we have to be numb, I’d rather know the pain!” RA is all for knowing the hard truth and doing the right thing. Once upon a time, I went out looking for music that fit my ethical views, I found a lot of whiney annoying bands that, while I agreed with them, sucked ass. Rise against is the one that stood out and satisfied emotionally, ethically, and musically. They’ve never failed to impress me.

Gonna disagree with most people here. I think this is faith, or rather a lack thereof.

"Oh God, I can't believe in you
Just because I'm afraid you're true"

Remember, she's Norwegian. Her English is damned good, but I think she meant to say something more like...

"Oh God, I can't believe in you
Just because I'm afraid you're REAL"

This is directed to god. She's saying that fear of punishment isn't enough to make her believe in him.

They say that most Norwegians go to church 3 times in their life, and three of those times they're carried.
(Baptism, wedding, funeral).

Rise Against – Worth Dying For Lyrics 19 years ago
"Now when the White flames are burning flags We found a world worth dying for"

Wonderful line isn't it? I love the image, I'm still working on the song as a whole (it seems a bit nihilistic, but I think really it's more about rising out of that and finding something worth fighting for), but taken out of context it makes for a hell of a quite.
