When I heard this song again recently, it reminded me of the Gears of War commercial that was out a few years back. I went and watched the Adam Lambert version from American Idol Season 8. I love the Gary Jules version the best.
My favourite interpretation is the one on page 1 saying it's about how a child can be so happy because he remains oblivious to the monotony and boredom of the 'real world' ahead and how the singer wishes they could be oblivious like a child once more... |

I recently heard this again on 102.1 The Edge's - Ongoing History of New Music broadcast where they did a two-episode special on Marthew Good. Hearing this song over a decade and a half after it first released and realizing how great it is makes you wonder how these guys didn't take off. Brilliant. I agree with Lornesd. Good interpretation of it. |

I can definitely agree that the best literal translation is relating it to King Louis XVI.
That isn't to say that other interpretations of it are wrong. Anyone that gets meaning out of it of someone/something that was once the authority/power falling and losing power/respect/authority is pretty much bang-on in my opinion. |

Yeah, this song is definitely pretty awesome. I've always been in love with it but until you find a true love for yourself and relate this song to your relationship with them, it doesn't have nearly the same meaning. waks85's comment about how this could relate to a relationship was my first hunch on it. But the French Revolution and King Louis XIV interpretation and fall of the Church, etc. makes more sense with what Coldplay seems to have intended. |
