This song could be about the trials of life that surround everyone. Problems with the world in general. "i'm tired of blood" could refer to war, "overpriced bubble gum" could refer to the capitalistic nature of the north american society. We tend to go through life with a "grin" on our face ignoring all the troubles of society that surrounds us. We also tend to "believe everything we read" or see in the news, when alot of the time it is propoganda brainwashing us into thinking a certain way. On top of that there are the personal problems that affect an individual, like the lonelyness matt speaks of in the song..... all this can eventually lead to a slight form of mental insanity and anguish. These troubles that surround us are the symbolistic white walls of the insane world/asylum we live in. The nice part about the song is that in the end we can come out of the temporary insanity, figure out whats going on, and "take the world and make it ours again".
I recently heard this again on 102.1 The Edge's - Ongoing History of New Music broadcast where they did a two-episode special on Marthew Good. Hearing this song over a decade and a half after it first released and realizing how great it is makes you wonder how these guys didn't take off. Brilliant. I agree with Lornesd. Good interpretation of it.
i think its about how the world is against him, and how is life is turning out wrong, so he is just gonna do nothing. this feeling progresses through the song as it goes from "so now I just sit here and think of meaningful things to say" to "so now I just sit here and think of meaningless things to say" it shows that the world is beating him down.

I love this song and think matt good is one of our (Canada's) Greatest Exports in the last 10 years. I also feel that he speaks what is real, I therefore believe this song speaks about North American Complaicency as lornsd said.
Brilliant song, very nice metaphors. I completely agree with lornesd's interpretation.
The thing I wanted to bring up is how he finishes with "It's all right now," which to me is a version of the "seize the moment" thing. The really cool thing is that if you're not paying attention, you'll hear it as "it's alright now," which, to mean, would mean that everything is ok and you can just accept your situation...
Maybe I'm reading too much into it, but that's just amazing to me.
In grade 10 English we were supposed to bring in songs to analyse the meanings of. I thought I had a winner with this song, not knowing really what it was about too much but figuring it was something to do with lornesd's comments of "'i'm tired of blood' could refer to war, 'overpriced bubble gum' could refer to the capitalistic nature...". I figured I couldn't go wrong with Matthew Goodband! I didn't research it or anything because I wanted the class to analyse it together and learn what my teacher had to say about it. Well little did I know after I played it for the class he turned it off pretty quickly, shrugged and said "it doesn't mean anything" then moved on. I was so shocked and embarrassed in front of the whole class that I couldn't muster a word to defend the music I loved a grew up to. He then moved on to another song a peer brought in which was a Billy Talent song.. I think Standing In The Rain. They're catchy.. I'll give them that. But nowhere near good music, even by Canadian standards in my opinion. Well my teacher raved that not only was it a great song and catchy but it was full of meaning. I wanted to scream that if that song's "meanings" were any more evident it would be a pop-up book for 5 year olds. I didn't think the class was about analysing something that was so obvious it had a play by play literally in the lyrics!
