The last song on this album, "Deaf Kids," also has a nod to the film CONTEMPT. The album and film both end with the same sound clip of someone saying "Silencio" into a loudspeaker. (I had to leave that little tidbit here, because "Deaf Kids" has no other lyrics to speak of, and therefore no entry!) |

Hmm, I always thought it was "a tight little fist and a face like another fist." I hope that's right, because it's my favorite line in the song.
No, wait..."She's like a machine of a dream" might be my favorite line. |

| Built to Spill – You Were Right Lyrics

The lyrics in here are well known lyrics to well known songs, so I doubt Built to Spill are showing off their musical knowledge or pointing to their influences. It strikes me more as the playlist of a teenager just beginning to discover classic rock. For me, it's a very nostalgic song. It takes me back to high school when I was listening to Pink Floyd and the Rolling Stones and Hendrix and the Doors and feeling alienated and pessimistic and all those lovely teenage emotions. And that's what the song is about for me: feeling like a moody teenager. Looking back at the music you used to listen to and saying, "Yeah, those guys got it right. All that depressing shit is still true."
I don't know if that's what's intended, but I think it's a great song regardless. |

The backing "oohs" at the end of the song remind me a lot of the backing vocals Bowie sang on Lou Reed's "Satellite of Love" a few years earlier. Very similar style. |

| The Books – Be Good To Them Always Lyrics

The sound clip of the little boy saying "I don't suppose it matters which way we go" is from the 1971 film WALKABOUT, in which a brother and sister are stranded in the Australian outback. (It's always strange to be watching a film and then suddenly recognize one line of dialog.) |

I think it's about lesbians AND insanity AND feminism. I wonder, though, whether "losing it" refers to losing one's mind or losing the battle, or both. |

i just wanted to add that the line:
and after having what she described as her most thrilling experience, she climbed from the tree next day a queen.
is the same clip used in their song "take time," although there it is altered to say:
For the first time in the history of the world a young girl climbed into a tree one day. She climbed down from the tree next day. God bless her. |
