oops I messed up.. I don't mean that children's perception matches adults by any means
just that sometimes, adults treat kids as unaware of what's going on around them |

actually, I take all of my above statements back
it's not a bad song but I wouldn't call it, the album, or morrissey himself beautiful, tbh |

ugh ew blergh I take it all back.
I really do dislike this album and this song and morrissey. I admire his work with the smiths but since they split he's been getting increasingly idiotic and stupid musically... As a person, I admire his endorsing of animal rights and sp on but I'm really embarrassed to have left those comments and wish I could delete them :( this song is terrible :\ |

| Morrissey – I Can Have Both Lyrics

I think he's saying that love is blind, genderless, and that our society is delusional to think that we've got to torture ourselves into denying ourselves love because they're of the wrong gender? That if someone loves you, and you find yourselves loving them... well, love is love. orientation definitions are arbitrary, as we're all human and life's too short to be cramming ourselves into boxes. I think we're too rigid about love, too, and I'm not talking sexual love; think about how sexual tension really undermines communication between some people, just because they're of the opposite gender; most people believe they have to seek another person out for sex, or that to treat someone with love indicates you're sexually interested in them...There's not enough love in nonsexual relationships, people are cold to one another because they don't want to seem like they're flirting with a member of the same or opposite sex, for instance. It's like we commit ourselves to loving one person at a time and pushing everyone else away, reducing love to sex alone; we live in a sex obsessed society, and he's saying it's ridiculous to live like this. well, in this song, obviously, saying he can have both; but I think what I've summarized is the message he sends through a great deal of his music.
I can't believe how quickly I've written all of this.
Beautiful song, I agree. |

I love this song
perhaps it's the passing of time... all of the people you meet... people churning in and out of grocery stores, malls, endless cycle of cash run through registers, so meaningless and futile on a universal scale. People getting married ("meeting in the aisle") without really knowing one another?
Just sounds like stepping back from everything familiar and futile and seeing it all pass... gaping at how some people just march by one another, or never look at anything critically at all...
I could be reading to much into it, of course, but it's always better to give them the benefit of the doubt. The music and title give room for these concepts to arise... |

I thought I read once that when Morrissey was young, a friend that he was close to committed suicide... and I've always found the closing part, the "You will leave me behind..." to be a bit chilling and gutwrenching, whether that is what the song is about or not... up until "Oh the alcoholic afternoons" the song does not seem to be so heavy... perhaps I'm reading too much into this. I feel for the man, and his music means so much more to me than many living things on earth... |

I really don't like her new album... and I have been a big fan of her previous work. I'm disappointed in Bjork |

is the reference to the actress Magnani ("you'll never be") an obscure hint to the gender of the person that broke his heart? or is he just playing with our minds, as usual? |

It's a beautiful song... I thought it was fairly repetitive at first, but it's really grown on me. I was worried that I was finally going to be disappointed by Morrissey but... thank god, no! Why is the video for this song so terrible, though? |

oh I should also add... the "illusions" part, is it maybe referring to the fact that there's so much illusion in our consumer society? or maybe I'm reading far too much into it: because the video may be referring to these things, but the song seems to refer to a troubled relationship... though perhaps only on the surface. |

This song is chilling, and the video for it equally chilling... after reading RLhockey's comment the video actually made more sense to me, the boy being a symbol of innocence and a puppet in a police state; the fact that he's underwater, holding his breath, really makes you feel that suffocation... a lot of symbolism in this video (the dove flying to the moon... the creepy men in the watchtower)... really interesting, the song has a lot more depth for me now that I have seen the video. |

I wish I could edit that a little; the "true nature of love and hate" is kind of trite and vague...and obviously we know the difference between love and hate but "why does it matter?" is the key question. anyway I think you probably get my point. |

I really love this song... it's so epic, so beautiful, so moving. I feel it's as obvious as it sounds... those existential fears about life and death and love combined with a huge awe for the vast beauty that is everything... The fear that goes along with living and knowing that one day, you're going to die. And at the end of the song, just surrendering to it all and remaining forever confused (how can we ever claim to know the true nature of love and hate) and awestruck and enjoying the sheer amazingness of being alive... That is what this song is to me. |

it reminds me of the marvin the paranoid android "reasons to be miserable" tracks...
depressing, the chorus makes me wince. but it is a good song. people often sugarcoat what they expect childhood to be like.. how they expect children to react, to act. adults tend to not give children enough credit or recognize their intelligence. it is uncommon for someone to actually talk to a kid without talking down or sugarcoating the conversation; kids are hardly ever treated as perceptive equals |
