Paul Simon – The Obvious Child Lyrics 14 years ago
Posted this in a reply but I thought I'd bump it up since it's out of the mouth of Mr. Simon:

Rupert Pumpkin posted:
I heard Paul say in an interview that "The cross is in the ball park" was a line he come up with while the Pope was doing Mass at Yankee Stadium on TV.

And I replied:
I heard that too. Bank it.
I'll always think of any ballpark as a sacred place (especially to a kid), so I love the origin of this line!
To Paul I think it punctuates this string of youthful memories triggered by a road sign, on to the girl when he was young, and then the indelible memory of the Mass in Yankee Stadium.

The font is actually splelled 'Gradl' (no e) and looks a lot like the lettering of the Grateful Dead's American Beauty album title.
Love waves a flower there. :)

Just since Mitch waxed sincere on this one, I'm gonna pick up the ball....

This song is obviously about queefs. Specifically JB's mom's.

Listen to one good Hatfield rap and you'll recognize the Oedipal complex instantly. Or just listen to Junior...: Maaaaamaaaa....

Third most likely to lead to some serious getting it on!
second = RHM
first = Bowlegged [which I just added the lyrics to. if this list is gonna be full of covers as well as originals, it's a sin to leave out Bowlegged]

Widespread Panic – Radio Child Lyrics 19 years ago
Yeah... um... I'm gonna have to go ahead and... um... disagree with you there, Mitch.

You can go ahead and putt the dean's daughter while this song plays, but I'm gonna stick around and rock out.

I agree it's not always what it could be, but I'd hardly call it a bathroom-breaker. Sometimes it smokes!

Widespread Panic – Pilgrims Lyrics 19 years ago
This is the best song in the world!

We are all Pilgrims.

We're all on a journey, be it on the highway with an FM soundtrack, or this larger trip we all share.

If we look we can see it - we all have riders whose eyes can sing to us.
Maybe a spouse or a child or a dog or a best friend. Maybe just that person you lock gazes with for a second at a Panic show.

I'm so thankful for all the hours Mikey rode shotgun in my life, and for every moment he can live on with us, shaking our souls through the radio.

Nonetheless, ever since 12/31/02 (first time I'd heard it without MH) I can't hear this song without something pouring from my eyes. Always mixed tears of joy and sadness, and always a few in there for Mikey's family, including the boys in the band and especially JB, who I've never heard refer to Mikey as anything but "my best friend".

Mikey is a Pilgrim of the Far Shores now, and this beautiful song remains to memorialize him.

Best. Song. Ever!!

Widespread Panic – Papa's Home Lyrics 19 years ago
Some had to add these (original lyrics):
Guess I'll do it.

Papa's Home (Christmas lyrics)
Transcribed by: Scott Holcomb

Papa's hittin' the road again
Takes his show cross-ountry for hire.
As the snow keeps fallin' down,
Frosty's gettin' bigger,
Mom's holding sister by the fire
Turning pages of photographs.
Warming their memories of Christmas past by the fire.

To the North Pole where some young wishes go,
Santa's bride mends his coat, keeps him warm.
And the elves are very handy,
They're always crackin' jokes,
But no one makes her laugh so easy,
Tellin' stories and forgettin' time.
Take a look at the rest in her eyes
And never grow tired.

Papa's driving past the night
He's working his way to make it home
The old man gonna be outside
When the morning come, when the morning comes

Papa's hittin' the roof again
Hanging stars with a hammer and wire.
As the snow keeps fallin' down,
Frosty's gettin' fatter,
Mom's holding sister by the fire
Turning pages of photographs.
Warming their memories and falling asleep by the fire.

Papa's he driving past the night
He's working his way to make it home
The old man gonna be a sight
When the morning come, when the morning comes
Papa's coming home
Papa's coming home

Papa coming home...

I'd would love to hear Mitch Cumstein's interpretation, but I guess he's off night putting.... If you're a Panic fan, do yourself a favor and browse these songs for his posts, they are Hi-larious!
