The Dresden Dolls – Necessary Evil Lyrics 19 years ago
I think people are missing the relationships references in this song... Amanda has referred to this album as a post- (post-?) breakup album and it's important to keep that in mind when listening to the songs -- some are more explicit than others...

"You could write a letter then...""Can you find yourself without me?".. "You are saying nothing but your tongue is getting blacker.." "I am broadcasting are you receiving?" --he's leaving her behind and not communicating.

The black tongue part reminds me of the "lies" in "Truce."

"I'm connecting speakers to my suitors at the discoteque
They don't know the difference, are they men or are they Memorex?"

--She's showdescribing how pathetic the dating scene... and then asking "can you find yourself without me?"

As far as "Listerine," I'm not sure if this is related, but she mentions in her blog:

"i don't take a shower every day. i don't want to. mike penta used to say, amanda palmer, amanda palmer is a dirty girl. he started a new toothbrush every two weeks."

She mentions her lack of hygiene quite a bit:

"Glass Slipper:" "Other girls shower but I hand out flowers..."

"Girl Anarchronis:" "And you can tell
by the red in my eyes
and the bruises on my thighs
and the knots in my hair
and the bathtub full of flies
that i'm not right now at all..."

A note on the Saskia jokes:

"in eden where you almost pulled your pants down
don't worry who these jokes will all be lost on" -- from "Boston"

These songs (among others), cross-reference each other quite a bit, actually. (As in "Backstabber": "don't tell me not to reference my songs within my songs!")
Cross-referencing becomes a joke in and of itself.

"The Jeep Song:" "Don't tell me that your off to see the world, I know you won't get very far. Don't tell me if you get another girl..."

This song is pretty much a condensation of the main issue in "Boston," which is his desire to go off (presumably on tour) and bed lots of girls...

and in "Backstabber:" "You’re all alone you’re all over...
the popular magazines will never care... What do you care? you’re down with the japanese.
But you’ve got no right to sit there saying I abuse it...
when you only sleep with girls who say they like your music."

She mentions "still working in the drug store" which ties in well with "I know you won't get very far..."

The city imagery makes a lot more sense in light of Boston as well; she mentiones London (his place), New York City, and Berlin (her place)...

Interestingly, "Boston" is a song about coming together in one loaction though the togetherness is constantly being threatened by travel, whereas in "Truce," she takes great pains NOT to see him, though she does "through some misunderstanding." Boston, which used to be the site of togetherness, she's especially particular about zoning so they don't end up in the same places.

It still blows my mind how layered these songs are...

Actually, I think she sings "old and incontinent," which is far funnier ;)
