I think that this song means new life: stop looking at the negatives of life and focus more on the positive things. And that when you start doing that, everything will be better. This song contains lines that suggest someone changing his ways "The night breathes different," and that it was really difficult to live: "I was doing everything, to keep me from choking," and it shows that he wants to change his ways: "this year cure me." and that once he has, things have gotten better: "...as the days grew color."
