Iron & Wine – Promising Light Lyrics 19 years ago
I agree with eisey, I think it's "scab." Also, at the beginning, it sounds to me like "preferred the sea AND tussling in the waves."

If that's the case, then the sea in this song seems to represent what is purely sexual, and also serves as a place to escape from something more meaningful than that ("dunking my head when I heard you call").

My take on the "promising light" is that he sees all kinds of potential - a "promising light" - with the other girls, which is augmented by the fact that he can't be with them. To me, the title of the song is ironic, because now, instead of seeing a promising light with a lot of other girls, he only sees what he lost with the girl he had. Or maybe it's that the promising light he saw in others is what actually caused him to lose the girl. All of this could be way off-base, for all I know, but that's the way I interpret it anyway.

I think it's about a woman in an abusive relationship who turns to drugs to cope with the pain. She's in love with her abuser - she doesn't want to be, but "we don't choose who we love." And the drugs aren't doing her any good - "She don't need what she use."

I agree that it's a morning-after song ("On a Sunday morning in her Saturday shoes" is a great lyric), but I think those bruises the daylight exposes are real, not metaphorical...or if they are a metaphor, they're emotional scars.

I'm not sure what "cold roses" could refer to, unless it's maybe her recognition that the abuser doesn't really love her.

Iron & Wine – Sodom, South Georgia Lyrics 19 years ago
I thought the lyric was "Small as a wish in a well."

I'd equate the small wish in a well with a prayer, which, in the grand scheme of things, is pretty insignificant. This image fits with the theme of unquestioning faith - he is smiling even in his obscure death. Also, like Mjc209 said, the wishing well is a symbol of childhood...perhaps reflective of the father's innocence or naivete in his faith.
