Cold Roses Lyrics

The mirrors in the room go black and blue
On a Sunday morning in her Saturday shoes
We don't choose who we love
We don't choose

The lights over the Midway melt on the street
In a Sunday shoes, with her Saturday feet
She don't love who he choose
She don't need what she use

Daylight comes and exposes
Saturday's bruises and cold roses
Cold roses

Nothing but the sunlight will help you grow
From underneath your bed you can't see the window
We don't choose what we see
We don't choose

Fortunate and angry just like a child
All that money buys you medicine but can't buy you time
We don't choose what we love
And she don't need what she got

Daylight comes and exposes
Saturday's bruises and cold roses
Cold roses

Cold roses
Cold roses
Cold roses

It's about the morning after for someone Adams cares about, and how what she does to herself hurts him.

I think it's about a woman in an abusive relationship who turns to drugs to cope with the pain. She's in love with her abuser - she doesn't want to be, but "we don't choose who we love." And the drugs aren't doing her any good - "She don't need what she use."

I agree that it's a morning-after song ("On a Sunday morning in her Saturday shoes" is a great lyric), but I think those bruises the daylight exposes are real, not metaphorical...or if they are a metaphor, they're emotional scars.

I'm not sure what "cold roses" could refer to, unless it's maybe her recognition that the abuser doesn't really love her.

I'm not sure about the 'cold roses' either but I did read in an interview, that he often uses the name 'rose' as an alter ego for himself in many of his songs. I agree with the morning after idea but I am wondering if the rose reference means these are his experiences and no someone elses.
