| Cass McCombs – Lionkiller Lyrics
|
To me, Lionkiller has always been about Cass himself, which is rare since he rarely sings about himself. To me this is one of the few exceptions.
I know Cass must be somewhat of a Hank Williams fan since he referenced Lovesick Blues as a "foundational.... thing" in his Guitar Moves video. "My hair is still curly and my eyes are still green" is clearly a reference to "My hair is still curly and my eyes are still blue" from Why Don't You Love Me by Hank Williams. It seems to be the perfect example of how he references other artists and media but modifies it to make it his own. |

I was going to post my own comment disagreeing with the paedophilia-related comments, but this one was pretty much spot-on. The only thing I would add is that, yes, Alex does say on the live CD that he wrote it when he was "about 13" but that can't possibly be true since "Paint It, Black" didn't come out until he was 15.
That being said, I do believe that Alex wrote the song, or at least the germ of it, when he was a young adolescent, and that this song is not about an older man falling for a young girl, but rather about two young teenagers in love. That's it. Pure, simple and completely innocent. |

| The Beach Boys – Let Him Run Wild Lyrics

What a great song. One of the more underrated songs in the Boys' catalogue. I guess it's about a guy who really loves a girl and wants to be with her, but the problem is that the girl is drawn to another guy. Now, he doesn't tell the girl at first, but he knows that this guy is just the manipulative type who just wants to get with as many girls as possible and just uses his charm to lure them in, trick them into thinking he loves them, and then ditch them like yesterday's news. The narrator is confident that one day this guy will realize the errors of his ways, but that time is not now and this girl is not the one that's going to break his vicious cycle. We just have to let him run wild for now, and one day he will reach the same level of maturity that the narrator is at NOW. The guy apparently cheats on her or does something to hurt her without officially dumping her. The narrator then tells her that he knew this would happen all along, and that now that she finally has some way to see what the narrator means, she should leave the other guy and get with the narrator, since he's the one that truly loves her. And it'd be a perfect situation for everyone involved - the narrator and the girl find love, which is what they want, and the narrator can continue to run wild and continue his manipulative ways, which is what he wants... or is it? |

| The Beach Boys – She's Goin' Bald Lyrics

I'm pretty sure Mike Love wrote the lyrics, so... I think this is a surreal allusion to Mike's own baldness. I mean, he was actually going bald at the time. It's like he wanted to write a song about himself going bald, but yet his lyrics need to be about women, so what's the combination? She's Goin' Bald! |

| The Beach Boys – I'd Love Just Once To See You Lyrics

I think this song is about a frustrating relationship between a man and a woman. The woman began giving the man signals that he interpreted as her being interested in him romantically. The truth is that at first that is what the signals meant, but the woman soon becomes disinterested in such a romantic relationship but still wants a platonic relationship with the man. However, this only makes the man desire the woman as more than friends more and more. This finally culminates in the last line - a raw sexual desire for her.
I love this song. |

That's some interesting trivia there, Bobo. Background details aside, it seems to be a fairly simple love song at heart. I disagree with what John said about George's singing - I think George has always had a great singing voice. Sure, he didn't have the range of John, let alone Paul, but his tone is great. |

I kind of disagree that the songwriter himself is being pessimistic here. I think it's more of a tongue-in-cheek message about how some people are only concerned with their own problems when they have a broken heart. |

Wow it's amazing how much different the production is on this record than on the ones that came after... it's uncanny, really. Just seems like a country vs. city song... and of course the country wins ;) |

Weird song. I think it's just about the world in general.. it's too much to really take in over a lifetime, let alone in a song that is *under 3 minutes*. In a typical Neil Young fashion, questions are asked, left unanswered, but the listener somehow feels satisfied in the end. |

This song describes an interesting perspective of having special powers... in this case, the negative side of psychic ability is discussed, and quite effectively I might add! |

I think Roberts is just once again questioning the mysteries of life. Throughout the album he seems to be struggling with Creationism. It seems like he accepts some form of it, but not without some skepticism and doubt. |

This is such a sadly beautiful sign... It's amazing how he can create such vivid imagery with such simple yet powerful words... my favourite line in the song is "An ocean of shaking hands that grab at the sky" -- wow. |

First off I'm pretty sure the title is actually "When You Dance You Can Really Love," despite what they actually say in the lyrics... anyway, I think it's just about the feeling you get when you're dancing with someone you love... love the outro! |

My favourite lines in the song are "Baby, can you hear it? Don't it make you want to lay down and close your eyes" and "Don't it make you want to wake up and open your eyes."
I think it's a very strong political message about how some of the ugliness that exists in the world, such as war, can make people want to just "close their eyes" and forget that it's all happening, and at the same time "wake up" and acknowledge it, and speak out against it. |

| Wilco – Red-Eyed and Blue Lyrics

One of the things I thought immediately about this song is a kind of negative sentiment towards the American Dream -- not so much an anti-american sentiment per se, but specifically towards the broken promise that tends to come out of the American Dream -- it\'s like, it seems as if they have everything -- great technology -- this was right at the very beginning of the tech boom of the 1990s -- but yet, they can\'t even do what they intended to do -- write songs and play them for the world -- without going broke. I think the whole \"red-eyed and blue\" is a play-on-words with \"red, white and blue\" |
