Okay, so here's what I know...
The Ninth Ward was the segregated black neighborhood in New Orleans that had been forgotten or ignored by the white politicians in the area; it was also destroyed by Hurricane Katrina when the levees broke. Levees that the government knew were not up to par. Last I checked, many of the destroyed, poorer neighborhoods in New Orleans were being zoned to put in expensive condos and basically not let the traditionally black city return to its roots.
"Overcrowded projects:" In the 1950s, America experienced an exodus of middle class white citizens out of the cities and into suburbs. This left cities without much tax revenue. In order to help the cities recover, the federal government built housing projects (big, ugly, apartment buildings) to provide cheap housing for urban families (mostly people of color). They neglected to build grocery stores, hospitals, or provide other necessary services (schools, police, hospitals), or access to employment, so the urban housing projects were quickly degraded to poverty and crime-laden neighborhoods. They've been that way for 50 years now.
"Innocent in rooms with bars and three walls:" Prison cells for mostly people of color who were unfairly convicted of crimes based on their race.
New kings: I'll take a guess and assume it's the currant wave of politicians interlaced with corporate lobbying interests and the military-industrial complex. |

Pretty obvious what the song is about...being desperately lonely but learning to be stronger than your insecurities and weaknesses. The title is a reference to Simon & Garfunkel's "I Am A Rock," which has the lines "I've got my books," and "I am an island" in it. |

Musically, this song fucking shreds. one of the best songs to play LOUD. lyrically, it is just as good. not meant to be a scholarly essay on border politics and morality because who really needs that shit? it is an in your face criticism that addresses the most fundamental and most ignored issues with the US/Mexico border.
MissNeurotic, you're from Finland, but how can you POSSIBLY say something as callous as "I don't care that much about human rights though...I'm more of an animal rights type of person."? All struggles and sufferings are interlinked. |

Just as Blithium said, it starts at the end. His life is ruined, his life in shambles.
No deadline, no schedule, no way to trace it. Too much shit went on for too long and there's nothing left to do at all, and the person he came down for means nothing to him anymore.
I imagine the inspiration for this album came from looking at the old white trash houses with the burned out alcoholics waiting around for life to end, and wondering what happened to in their lives to end up like this. |
