My Bloody Valentine – Only Shallow Lyrics 16 years ago
the lyrics to this song don't make a whole lot of sense -- it's on the edge of a dream. that said, the entire album is arguably the ultimate soundtrack for making out and fvcking. I wish I had a copy of this CD when I was in college....

Sonic Youth – Poison Arrow Lyrics 16 years ago
live, Thurston introduced "Poison Arrow" as a "love song", but he might have said "Love song", as in Courtney Love. I don't mean to suggest that Thurston was ever romantically interested in Love, but just as the earlier SY song "Junkie's Promise" was at least partially inspired by Kurt Cobain, "Poison Arrow" could be a third-person observation of Courtney Love as a "femme fatale" (or trainwreck, depending on your POV).

Black Flag – Black Coffee Lyrics 19 years ago
I always thought the line went, "Anger and coffee, feeding me"....

regardless, a truly great song to drive fast to. Rollins' WM3 'cover' is one the best songs on that comp.

Soundgarden – Ty Cobb Lyrics 19 years ago
supposedly the original name for this song was "hot rod death toll," but someone (Ben?) suggested "Ty Cobb", because they're both short and nasty. great song....

Jane's Addiction – I Would For You Lyrics 19 years ago
this is a great make-out song!

Black Sabbath – War Pigs Lyrics 19 years ago
great song, but it really sucks that it's still topical and relevant thanks to Dubya the warmonger. if Bush really believed his "war of choice" in Iraq was just, then why haven't his daughters volunteered for the Army? think of the example that would set! oh nevermind, they leave that role to the poor.

The Pogues – Down All The Days Lyrics 19 years ago
FWIW, noise technicians Steel Pole Bath Tub did a very reverent cover of this song....

X – White Girl Lyrics 19 years ago
supposedly, this song was written about John Doe's affair with Germs bassist Lorna Doom, at a time when he and Exene Cervenka were still together. creepy lyrics, but great song....

Ramones – Do You Remember Rock'n'roll Radio? Lyrics 19 years ago
probably my favorite Ramones song, even though the sax riff was pretty much completely antithetical to punk rock. this shoulda been a massive radio hit....

Black Flag – My War Lyrics 19 years ago
is there a drug reference in here (e.g., the "war on drugs")? I forget when it was that Ginn starting hitting the bong again, but "the process of weeding out" is definitely a pot reference (among other things)

Mudhoney – Suck You Dry Lyrics 19 years ago
awesome song, but these aren't even close to the correct lyrics (unless you're on crack, I guess). sample: "no time like the present, to get ripped apart"

Jawbreaker – Equalized Lyrics 19 years ago
I think this song's about just giving up trying... very uplifting in its nihilism.

Jawbreaker – Better Half Lyrics 19 years ago
this song is about control, and realizing just how powerless you really are....

Foo Fighters – Everlong Lyrics 19 years ago
this song is supposedly among many on TCATS that were written about/after Dave Grohl's divorce, and after going through divorce myself it went from a good song to a GREAT song.

His Hero Is Gone – Professional Mind Fuckers Lyrics 19 years ago
"out of your control! out of your control!"

perhaps the best HHiG tune ever, each part building to the inevitable explosion....

Frodus – Red Bull Of Juarez Lyrics 19 years ago
Frodus experienced more than the average amount of adversity on the road, and this song sums it up. good song, though.

Frodus – Explosions Lyrics 19 years ago
for all practical purposes, this was Frodus' credo. I miss them....

Rites of Spring – Hain's Point Lyrics 19 years ago
I almost forgot -- "don't try to reach for nothing at all" is a credo for anyone to live by....

Rites of Spring – For Want Of Lyrics 19 years ago
the line "if there's nothing here, then it's probably mine" says so much about nothing....

and to skillfire -- I was aware of what "emo" meant back in 1995, and most intelligent people agree that RoS was in fact the first "emo" (or "emo-core") band. read the book "dance of days", or get someone to read it to you.

Rites of Spring – Hain's Point Lyrics 19 years ago
I used to think this was merely a decent song, but like much of the second Foo Fighters CD, its meaning became so much deeper after going through a divorce. Rites of Spring was all about total emotional release, and to me this song is their best -- when I hear the opening chords, the hair on the back of my neck starts to stand up, and by the time the vocals kick in I've got chills running all the way down my body. oh yeah, if you're ever in DC, rent a bike and visit Hain's Point (at the eastern tip of East Potomac Park) and its larger-than-life sculpture, "The Awakening".
