Gomez – Options Lyrics 12 years ago
Oh man, this song is stuck in my head bad. It even drove out the stupid toddler show theme I've been humming for the last six weeks ("Toopy and Binoo," if you were curious).

Blood, Sweat & Tears – And When I Die (Peter, Paul and Mary cover) Lyrics 12 years ago
I always interpreted the "one child born" line as a fairly generic reference to the continuation of life-- the singer is pointing out that life will continue even after his (or her, it was written by a woman after all!) own time ends.

Placebo – Taste In Men Lyrics 13 years ago
That's pretty much what I got out of it, too, though I gotta point out that it's not necessarily a girl. The lyrics don't specify a gender-- even if the characters from the video are cast in the roles you described, it's not always clear which character is actually meant to be filling each role. Which, now that I think about it, could be intentional.

The Ark – Tired of Being an Object? Lyrics 14 years ago
This song makes a direct statement about those who feel the need to protect women from their own desires- in this case, the desire to be seen as attractive. The alternation between "slut-shaming" and assigning a victim status to women who dare to act in an overtly sexual manner is seen among both social conservatives and radical feminists*- indeed, I've seen a number of instances where radfems have silenced women (particularly sex workers) who disagree with the doctrine of objectification = victimization. The power inherent in self-determination WRT sexuality is pointed out, as is the insulting nature of assuming that someone needs a shield.

*Not saying all radfems are like this, just that there are some rather vocal radfems who do hold this position.

The Ark – Disease Lyrics 14 years ago
Many of the symptoms described aren't specific to any disease. I'm taking a class on the sociology of ageing at the moment (which is why this interpretation pops into my head) and some of the symptoms are incredibly easy to link to age- something that's considered a "disease" by much of western society. Looking at it from that perspective, there's the idea of growing old together.

There's plenty of other specific diseases that fit those symptoms to some degree (cancer is another that jumps into my head right away). Based on Ola's description, I'd guess that disease is less of a metaphor, per se, and more of an example of the extent of one person's dedication to their loved one. It's a common theme throughout society- just think about the standard marriage vows, which often include phrases like "in sickness and in health" and "in good times and in bad."

Er, sorry about jumping on an old post, etc.- I'm writing a paper, and my brain is stuck in "assignment mode." If I don't get this out there, it's gonna be stuck in my head all night >.<

They Might Be Giants – I Should Be Allowed To Think Lyrics 16 years ago
Ginsberg was an influence on this song- several other lines in this song could be applied to the Beat generation in general or Ginsberg specifically, though overall, it comes off as more of a teenager's interpretation of Ginsberg.

It also made me totally unable to read Howl without getting the tune stuck in my head, as I discovered last semester >.< I ended up humming this thing for weeks. I'm pretty sure that parts of my term paper have the same rhythm and syntax because of it.

Ween – The Rainbow Lyrics 16 years ago
You know, if you're going to debate against homosexuality, you might want to make sure you know what you're talking about. It's not a "slippery slope-" comparing consensual act to molestation is not only a flawed argument, but it's insulting. There is no correlation between paedophilia and homosexuality.
Never mind the fact that neither children nor animals are legally capable of signing a contract, which is what marriage is.
Oh, and homosexuality is natural- unless, of course, you ignore what has been seen to occur naturally in about 1500 species.

I've heard a couple of different versions. This is simply the version I had on my computer when I submitted these lyrics.

The Ark – Disease Lyrics 16 years ago
Ola did an interview last month, and talked about "Disease"

http://www.thearkworld.com/Interview080104_EN.pdf
"“Disease” is definitely not about AIDS.
Actually it is not about any disease at all,
in any other way than as a metaphor. In
fact it is about love, about togetherness
between two people, and total dedication."

The Ark – Tell Me This Night Is Over Lyrics 16 years ago
This song is weird- it's both depressing and uplifting. It's one of the few songs with a "get over it" theme that doesn't sound condescending. Instead of a message of 'it's not so bad" which all too many songs have, he's admitting that life can get absolutely shitty at times, but the only thing you can do is keep living and hope for better days.

The Ark – Rock City Wankers Lyrics 16 years ago
@ humbug: I agree, though "Just because you're full of it / doesn't mean that you're the shit" is a close second :)

The Ark – The Others Lyrics 16 years ago
So, I'm not the only one who was reminded of "Freaks." As one of those Others he's singing about, I find this song encouraging. It's amazing how much one little song can help when you start feeling like everyone you meet hates you for being different than them.

An awesome love song, with just the right amount of "fuck you" thrown in to the mix.

The Ark – 2000 Light-Years of Darkness Lyrics 16 years ago
Is it possible that it's about the cyclical nature of father/son relationships? I mean:

"Father and son
Our thoughts will be one
Connected in souls
Together at last
In the same black hole "

It could be a comment on how a son becomes like his father as he ages, and eventually passes on, just like his father before him.

The Ark – Disease Lyrics 16 years ago
I see, not only the obvious AIDS reference, but also a declaration of dedication to his partner despite the hardships that will be present, which is summed up by "I believe I could get through it / I could even get into it / But only you could make me do it" and '’Cause if you’d die / Then I should die beside you."

I've had this one song on repeat for the last hour- I cant get the first two stanzas out of my head >.

The Ark – Beauty Is The Beast Lyrics 16 years ago
A great song from one of my favorite albums of all time. The line "In a world who thinks of ugly as the cardinal sin" sums up the current views that western society holds quite well- you only need to turn on the TV for a few moments to see that.

The Kinks – Lola Lyrics 16 years ago
You know, it's surprising to see a song with both gay and trans themes gain so much popularity. I always laugh when I see a homophobe or transphobe with this in their playlist.

Bob Dylan – A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall Lyrics 18 years ago
While I could not hope to interprete this entire song, I must add this: the lines "I met one man who was wounded in love,
I met another man who was woundedin hatred," seems to me to be a reference to friendly fire in war.

Bob Dylan – Masters of War Lyrics 18 years ago
The anger and frustration in this song echo the sentiments of so many people today, just as they did during Vietnam. As long as governments stage pointless wars using citizens as pawns, this song will be relevant.

The Pogues – Waltzing Matilda Lyrics 18 years ago
This song reminds me of a poem we learned in highschool, actually. Does anyone else think of Dulce et Decorum Est when listening to this?
