Definitely a slow-burner this album, but this one is very good. Seems to be about someone who doesn't think they care about someone that much but ends up realising they do. |

I agree with one of the prior comments. Certainly feels like a song about communism/Russia. The references to cities being named after them, the revolutionary, the living in a place where (unfortunately) the problems of the past still get passed on generation to generation as it's hard to change.
The imagery of nooses and scarfs made me think that perhaps she feels people are responsible for their own downfall, and how Russia (and formerly the ussr) has maintained many of its own downfalls.
As always very unique sounding song, so much feeling and compassion in her writing. |

The lyrics are pretty much to the point. A girl who was left by a man. She ends up getting over him and then when she sees him sad she gets a certain amount of schadefreunde. So much like a million and one break up songs, then.
At worst this has a nice summer-beat feel with pop lyrics. At best it is a catchy song with a twist of guilty pleasure and a theme anybody who has been through an un-wanted break-up can doubtlessly connect with.Edited by delial on January 17 2008, at 05:55PM |

Surprised by the negative feedback, i suppose that's the problem when a band gets successful...the 'cool' don't like that their band has gone mainstream and lash out.
It seems to be about your belief in something that influenced you changing, and wondering who is to blame. In this case American culture may be symbolic for something more, or perhaps just questioning whether the view of america has changed for the worse in our lifetimes. |

Well as anyone with the album knows (it charts the life of a boxer and his girlfriend), this is the part where the boxer becomes a drunk and she's trying to help him through it. It seems that he is drinking because he misses his boxing career...but what do I know? |

I think the song is about how the heartfelt artists (who maybe aren't so model-pretty) of our era don't get the airing they deserve ("No bright shiny surface to my face"), but the more pop-like music with less meaning does and in doing so doesn't send out the right messages ("it's all about drugs, it's all about shame" |
