I've loved this song since I first heard it years and years ago, and I always knew it was vaguely creepy, but I really listened to the words this morning, and WOW it's weird. I don't know why there are about 200 comments--it's clearly about a serial killer and/or a rapist. It's not subtle at all. |

Is anyone else really annoyed that out of 160 comments 30 of them are actually about the SONG MEANING? Downrate all the OMGILOVETHISSONG and other unrelated posts...including this one. |

Thanks for posting something about the "song meaning" instead of OMG I LOVE THIS SONG. It's helpful to those of us who visit this site to read lyrics and figure out what songs mean. |

I wouldn't be too surprised if it's anti-war but it seems more like it's about a gang leader (?) who's using a specific person by creating a scapegoat. I just don't see Bush saying "you're gonna go far" to a Marine. |

Stone Free: I just now figured this out! Demons isn't supposed to be a complicated metaphor. You've heard "we all have our demons." He's looking at all the negative things, but only keeps the "good ones"--this either means focusing on the good or actually working on the problems that something good can come from. This is just a more nuanced version of "Don't Worry, Be Happy" (one of my all-time favorite songs!). Your attitude, your choices, your focus, can do so much to bring you out of depression.
And as for the comment about Coldplay being emo, that made me want to throw up too. I hope you just have the definition of emo wrong. Emo to most people is music that's all about feeling sorry for yourself and hating the world. Coldplay isn't like anyone else. Their lyrics and music are beautiful. I'm pretty sure emo doesn't bring people up; it brings them down. |

"The meaning isn't supposed to be hidden"
Okay, I changed my mind. :) With lines about the smeared ink and the vinyl sticker, the specific meaning is a little obscure, but the themes are still obvious. Leave to Gibbard to perfectly describe and even develop these emotions through music. |

I came to this site because I couldn't figure this song out. Seeing the words of the verses has helped a lot. And thanks to everyone who contributed their opinion! I don't like it when I'm looking for answers and I read "this song is awsome!!!111" over and over again.
That said, this song is awesome. I never listen to songs on repeat because I like variety so much, but I literally can't stop listening to this song. The lyrics have just the right amount of poetry so it's not incomprehensible.
The meaning isn't supposed to be hidden: I think this girl is out of his league, in a way. Not that she's necessarily better than him, she's just a different type of person (although the "gaudy apartment complex" is evidence that maybe she is 'above' him). I can totally relate to this. I've fallen for a girl and then seen her next fling and realized "Wow, we don't fit together." (the freckles in our eyes aren't perfectly aligned!) Fortunately I've never gotten this far with anyone who I was that different from, to the point where I'd visit her and end up driving home drunk... |

from the first time i heard this song, i knew it had to be about finding love. when i was younger, i knew so many girls who, as much as i was attracted to them, we never could have a real connection. there was something missing. fortunately for me, there was someone out there

i've always wondered which REM song exactly is referred to, but (here's the answer everyone's sick of) i don't think we'll ever know. somebody makes a good guess on this website:
http://www.simpleprop.com/anderswa/012306lifetime.html
but it seems like kevin didn't WANT us to know. and it's really hard because the song could be anything special off of "that disc that you'd given me." it makes very little difference to the meaning of the song, but i still would like to know.
i think it's cool that BTE uses a song to describe how emotionally powerful, nostalgic, and healing a song can be. these guys like music, and they know how to use it. |

i'm suprised no one has said this yet; it's the first thing i thought of...this might be way off, but i like to think of "I was having a look in a book and I saw a picture of a guy fried up above his knees." as suicide, like when monks would protest by quietly pouring gasoline all over themselves and lighting themselves on fire. it goes with the rest of the song; society is disgusting and maybe protesting won't change anything, but you still have to do something about it--you've had all you can take and you're literally bursting. i love incubus and their take on "people's mindless games"!! |

first off, it's pretty pretentious to tell everyone else that they're wrong and that your interpretation of this song is the right one. you can do that with a lot of songs, but this song was written with a purpose. basically, (according to the rock and roll hall of fame write-up,) page and plant sat down and decided that they were going to write the greatest rock song of all time. in my opinion, they did. (yes, i know plenty of other zep songs and tons of rock songs.)
i think that a lot of the interpretions on here have merit to them. there are certainly different shades of meaning. and, mr. no name, plant was not a shallow writer; taking lyrics from a couple of his songs doesn't prove anything. 1) they could be taken out of context. 2) what if he wrote a couple bad songs? every band that has produced as many songs as l.z. has made some bad ones. 3) just because something is direct doesn't mean that the writer sucks at songwriting. simple can be beautiful, and someone who writes simple lyrics can write deep ones right alongside of them. and my personal favorite 4) "when the levee breaks" IS A BLUES SONG! it's apples to oranges.
rock on. |

this song, to me, is about that feeling when you're alone in the world and you wonder if there will ever be anyone who understands you. someone to mirror your heart. someone to love. i don't know what every line means, but i sure know that feeling. |
