Shania Twain – I Ain't Goin' Down Lyrics 19 years ago
This is my favorite song on Up! I love the story telling, and hope to hear more of that from Shania in the future. i don't know where she got her inspiration to write the song, but it seems very realistic that it could have been a song about her mom!

Dire Straits – Why Worry Lyrics 19 years ago
I love that this song is included in the album because it is light and easy. No great metaphors to wrap your brain around, just a nice song to enjoy.

Mark Knopfler – 5.15 A.M. Lyrics 19 years ago
Can anyone help me out on this song?? I've read and reread the lyrics over and over, and i'm STILL STRUGGLING. i've got a few Knopfler albums--so i see his song writing is a combonation of story telling, cynicsm, and great metaphores; but this song might mean so much more if i knew what the heck he is talking about!

Mark Knopfler – Our Shangri-La Lyrics 19 years ago
Paradise? eh. i have to question that one.

Knopfler doesn't write love songs, he tells stories. I'm stealing a quote from someone else's post on Romeo and Juliet (a song written by Knopfer and performed by his band, Dire Straits). Here it goes: remember that Mark Knopfler never really wrote songs to convey emotions but he was more of a story teller. And while most of his songs carry a lot of emotion, you need to look into the lyrics to understand the song.

"This is all the heaven we got, right here where we are in our Shangri-La." They are not in Paradise, its just a great one night stand. But don't let that stop you from loving the song, its really great.

Dire Straits – Brothers In Arms Lyrics 19 years ago
I don't know enough political history to link "Brothers In Arms" to any particular war or upheavel. But, the song communicates to me an entirely anti-war message. I also get the feeling that there is symbolism in the "sun" --"So many different worlds, So many suns...," and I also think that the phrase itself, "Brothers in Arms" refers both to the ones he's fighting WITH at the begining of the song (And you'll no longer burn To be brothers in arm) and also the ones he's fighting AGAINST at the end of the song (We're fools to make war
On our brothers in arms). I find the anti-war message especially evident in this change of identity.

I really love how Knofler can bring together great lyric writing with a powerful melody performance in this song. So many songs, while aesthetical pleasing to the ear lack any real meaning--on the other hand "Brothers In Arms" is surpassing!
