It is about crystal meth but a realization that I just had is when he says "I want something else... To get me through this life... Not listening when you say goodbye" I really think that he's been offered an ultimatum... Choose either me or the drug... And he's choosing the drug. Just saying... |

| I wanted to add this... For those of you that say it was both of them... No, please note the extreme guilt in his face when she comes over to him saying how she doesn't wanna live that way, reading into every word you say... This is all on him... | |

It's been a long time since I wrote anything but here goes. Watching the video may help you get my perspective, I'll explain why at the end The first thing he mentions thinking of is her saying she's so happy she could die. So maybe when they got together the chase was over, he had her, and it took some of the fun away. When he's saying "Told myself that you were right for me, but felt so lonely in your company" during the relationship he knew he had a girl he could settle down with. Didn't necessarily feel lonely in her company, just told himself that because it wasn't over the top exciting anymore. In the second verse, he's making excuses, - "Addicted to a certain kind of sadness" ~ He's a player and trying to justify that. Addicted to the rush he gets from getting the girl, and breaking her heart. That's what he's referring to when he says "Resignation to the end, always the end" nothing ever comes of it, there's always an end. "When we found that we could not make sense..." We??? Sounds to me like he convinced her that it wouldn't work out and said that they should still be friends, because that's what players do... They wanna stay friends to keep you on a back burner in case they're in need of a hook up one night. The chorus shows us a little more of the story though... she was hurt, she didn't want to see him so she had her friends get her stuff and changed her number. She cut him off, and he just couldn't believe that she walked away, cause lets face it - as girls we're suckers way too often and let this crap go on cause we think if we stay friends you'll remember how much you liked us and we can win you back. It never works out, you get used instead, and she just wasn't having it... I say you go girl :-) But anyway (got off on a tangent there lol) Now that he can't have her, of course he wants her more, but alas, she's changed her number... "I don't even need your love" On the other side of heartbreak, now realizing he's f**k*d this all up, he's trying to convince himself he doesn't need her -"You didn't have to stoop so low" is just more laying blame player style, like this this was her did him wrong... And then there's, "I guess that I don't need that though, Now you're just somebody that I used to know" He want's to blow her off like she was nothing, just somebody that he used to know. I just love it when the song clearly changes direction at the start of Kimbra's verse... She remembers all the times he screwed her over... Probably breaking plans or showing up late or not calling her when he says he will... All the s**t that players do, the whole time making her think she was doing something wrong to cause this behavior. She was reading into every word he said, so you know that she liked him a lot and was trying to figure out what was on his mind and what was going on. What was the one little thing she said that she did or said to make him mad or scare him off and make him not call? HOWEVER... In thats last part of her verse "You said that you could let it go,-She's throwing it in his face- And I wouldn't catch you hung up on somebody that you used to know" Like - what? I thought I was nothing to you? We "didn't make sense"... remember? For those of you watching the video: see how it starts... he begins telling the story, everything is simple. It's just him, naked, and nothing else matters, but you can see, the lines come through as the story starts to unfold and gets complicated. (Like all those little pieces and colors) Kimbra is all caught up in that crazy web, she says her piece and then gets out of there... Notice how he won't even look at her because he knows that this was all his fault... She doesn't wanna be twisted up in those complicated games anymore, she shakes it loose and leaves him there in his own mess. I think the angular pattern represents how they could have actually had something but it was shattered. Anyway, that's my take. |

| Oh Land – Sun of a Gun Lyrics | 14 years ago |
| agree, this song is completely amazing. I believe some guy is playing her, and maybe he doesn't even mean to, but strings her along. She says she's burned out on this "rush", the rush you get when you meet someone you're really into... makes you hurt when the feeling is not returned. Unrequited love is the inspiration here, I think, despite the upbeat tempo... But it makes for such a great song... | |

| Wow! A lot of great idea's! at first I thought along the lines of the abusive/ controlling husband, but the interpretations from law4 and flymeeee really made sense as well. I'm a big fan of multiple meanings, that's why this is a great song. | |

losing a star without a sky losing the reasons why you're losing the calling, you've been faking >> In a world where so many people are adamant about a specific thing, it’s still hard for some of us to find one thing to have that much passion about. After a while, you just stop giving a fuck, and “going through the motions” so to speak, just to get by. and I'm not kidding it's damned if you don't and it's damned if you do >> If you don’t care about anything, you fall into depression and everything loses meaning, whereas, if you do care, you’re still fucked, because things don’t go as planned, or don’t go at all, and you’re just left heartbroken. be true 'cause they'll lock you up in a sad sad zoo >> If you stop caring altogether, no tears, no fears, no sad no happy no anything, you get locked up in the “sad sad zoo” which I think is the mental hospital. oh hidy hidy hidy what're you trying prove? by hidy hidy hiding you're not worth a thing >> You can’t prove anything by being unfeeling, and what point is there in living if you feel absolutely nothing? sew your fortunes on a string and hold them up to light >> Take everything you have, or think you have: all your stuff, all your family, everything you did, and examine them all very closely. What does any of that mean in the end? Nothing. When you have experienced so much hurt and learn to block feelings out, teach yourself not to care so you don’t get hurt like that again, (excuse my grammar here) nothing means anything anymore. blue smoke will take a very violent flight and you will be changed and everything >> POOF! Like in a magic show, once you realize what’s happened, the illusion (that anything mattered in the first place) is gone. and you'll be in a very sad sad zoo I once was lost but now I'm found was blind but now I see you >> You finally find something… someone that you care about, that breaks down those walls. Finally, a fucking reason, something that you would take a chance on. how selfish of you to believe in the meaning of all the bad dreaming >> And they are content to let things go to shit, because like you, they prepare themselves for the worst, because it hurts less that way. It’s easier to just let it fall by the wayside, because who wants to risk feeling that hurt again? metal heart you're not hiding metal heart you're not worth a thing metal heart you're not hiding metal heart you're not worth a thing >> Her heart is impenetrable, like metal, unfeeling, and not worth a thing because of this. She doesn’t want to hide, and be unfeeling, but her heart knows no other way. |

| Cyndi Lauper – True Colors Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| I can't hear this song anymore without coming close to tears... I thought I could see my boyfriends true colors, even though everybody warned me... I didn't find out until yesterday, when I came home from work to find my 3 year old daughter left alone in our apartment ...when he was supposed to be babysitting her. He had left to go find heroin, and got arrested on the way home as he pulled into our parking lot. I guess I couldn't really see anything. | |

| Soundgarden – Spoonman Lyrics | 19 years ago |

DUALITY IN MEANING, PEOPLE!!!!! Songs have multiple meanings, artists don't write EXACTLY what they wanna say, otherwise, they would sound like a bunch of crazy people who should be in therapy. Instead, they're able to take all these things in their minds, and roll it up into a song, the music gives you the feelings, and the lyrics add to it, THATS WHY IT'S ART. So can we not fight, people? That said, my take on this song is that it's about heroin. When he says all my friends are brown and red, sounds like heroin and red rock opium. All my friends are skeletons, dope essentially turns you into a skeleton. Also, when you get high, it makes you feel more creative. (see artist K's Choice, I'm not an addict) steal the rhythm while you can, is like, soaking up those creative juices bore you crash from your high. Speak the rhythm on your own/ all alone, people often feel isolated in their drug use, beause that's not something you just go around confessing to people about. I'm together with your plan/ save me, is I'm hooked, when you're on dope, it feels like dope is saving you (from your problems, and reality of your drug use) and at the same time you know that you need saved from it, so you come to the realization of what your life is, and you're screaming that inside, SAVE ME. I'm sure the song has other meanings, but people are flippping out like anyone who interprets this song about drugs is stupid, or a junkie, or both, and that's just not the case. Soundgarden came up with Alice In Chains, Nirvana, to name a few. Many of these bands and/or the band members were hooked, so it's not an impossibility, and these interpretations are not "stupid". People; try to keep an open mind, remember that everyone is different, with their own personal take on what the song means, and thats what this site is all about. |

PS Ductape, you make me smile. "firstly there is no such animal as a veal - this is the name given to the meat of young cattle. like pigs are not porks, cows are not beefs and sheep are not muttons." |

OK people, first of all i want to say that I really enjoy reading all the interpretations, there are some really good ones that I never would have thought of. Second, some people fight and say, you're wrong, and I'm right, but I think tat more than one person can be right because great songs have a lot of duality in their meaning, different people relate different ways. Anyway, like nearly every other AIC song, this is about Layne's addiction wishing he could stop or even want to stop and failing. Here's my interpretation if anyone cares. (i'm doin' the line by line thing) I'm the man in the box Buried in my shit Won't you come and save me, save me =He's trapped in his addiction, that he got himself into, wondering who can help, if he can't help himself. 1. Feed my eyes, can you sew them shut? = Everything reminds dope fiends of heroin, it's constantly in your face, in your music, everywhere. He's saying, "I can see it, Ihave to have it, like the only way to stop is to sew his eyes shut. 2. Jesus Christ, deny your maker = In addiction, dope controls your life. It is your god, (see:God Smack) so trying to kick dope is like denying god. I'm fairly sure he's not talking actual religion here. 3. He who tries, will be wasted = It's neaarly impossible to kick dope, especially back then no buprenorphine, it's fact that most who fall into heroin addiction don't recover. So it's like this: try to deny your god (heroin), you fail, and end up wasted (high) once again. 4. Feed my eyes now you've sewn them shut = the second time he says this is like a play on the same words meaning different things. In this case, Feed my eyes Now you've sewn them shut means now I've got my dope right here in front of me, and I can finally stop thinkin' about it it. I'm the dog who gets beat Shove my nose in shit = when dos are getting house trained, one method is to stick their nose in the shit if they do it in the home, as punishment so they won't do it again. So here it's like, I constantly get fucked up, even though it fucks up my life, I can't be broken of this. Won't you come and save me, save me: once again, please rescue me from this. And then the chorus again. This song fucking rocks if you can not think of how depressing the lyrics actuaally are. I still love it though. I'm interested in feedback if anyone cares to comment. |

| Björk – Bachelorette Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| i think this song is about a girl that completely loves this guy, but he runs and it hurts her. he always comes back, though, so she feels like theres something between them. she wants him to commit, but can't bring herself to ask it of him, fearing he might never come back, so she just let him keep up the whole love/ hurt cycle within her while he remains indifferent. or it could be that i just see it that way cause it's kinda happening to me right now. | |
| Chris Isaak – Wicked Game Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| here's what this song is to me: you've been hurt before, so you're being very cautious with feelings in general. except then you meet someone, they draw you in, and even if you don't want to, you fall for them knowing the whole time that the results might be a disaster- and you fail to care, that's a wicked f****n game. | |
