Courtney also auditioned for the role of Nancy Spungen in "Sid and Nancy" which came out in 1990 (?) which is again, before she met Kurt. Hole also signed a record deal with Geffen Records before Nirvana did. They just took a lot longer to get a record out. I dont know why there is a war of love Kurt hate Courtney. I love the music of Nirvana and Kurt as well as the music of Hole and Courtney. They are both extremely talented. I dont think she had anything to do with his death. I think the song Malibu is about the fact that he was in rehab/detox in LA and she may have also been in rehab in Malibu - cant remember the details anymore. However, i like the song Celebrity Skin, but "Malibu", "Northern Star" and "reasons to be Beautiful" are clearly songs about intense sorrow and also rage at Kurts suicide. They are all incredible songs. Northern Star sends shivers through my spine every time I play it. I always crank the volume. Dying and Playing your Song I believe are also about Kurt. In Dying she is pleading with Kurt "you promised me" |

BTW: Frances Farmer was from Seattle and Kurt named his daughter after her. As for the person who said: "This song is the only "hit" Hole has and i just have to give the credit to Billy Corgan. I bet Courtney earned lots of money for dating Billy. But this doesn't mean thet i wouldn't like some of holes entirely own songs." First of all the entire album "Live Through This" was a much bigger hit than the album "Celebrity Skin" and that other album spawned a bunch of hits in "Violet", "Doll Parts", "Miss World", "Asking For it" and "Softer, Softest" As for dating Billy Corgan, she dated him long before she met Kurt Cobain and long before Smashing Pumpkins hit it big. |

Ok, first the important part: The song is clearly about Courtney Love herself. Many people considered her a sell out for going to Hollywood. Many thought she would fail miserably in Hollywood. But she was determined to go anyway, even though she was constantly attacked by people for wanting to act. (glad I came here with your pound of flesh) "Oh, Cinderella They aren't sluts like you Beautiful garbage, Beautiful dresses Can you stand up or will you just fall down" Basically as evidenced by the people spewing their "song meanings" here - she is referring to the fact that people think she is a slut. The stand up fall down line clearly refers to the fact that people do not think she can make it in Hollywood. Now above, somebody spews the lyrics to "Frances Farmer Will Have Her Revenge on Seattle" and they say it is about her and is proof she killed him. The song is about Frances Farmer and how she was persecuted and lobotomized. There is also the reference in this song to witch hunts "To see if they float or drown". In the old days, that is how people on witch hunts tested to see if a woman was a witch - if she floated she was a witch, if she sunnk she was not a witch - unless I have it backwards. There is another Nirvana song with a similar line about sinking or swimming but cant think of it off the top of my head. On a more personal level, I think the chorus "I miss the comfort in being sad" is kind of a state of how low he is, at least when he was sad he felt something, now he feels nothing. |

| Vezo - I guess it has been a month since you posted this - but a rampart is part of a defensive fortification - like the wall of a castle or a wall around a town to defend the town. I assume in this song, metaphorically he is speaking of a wall he built around his feelings and when he met this girl, he let down his defenses - or actually, she breached his defenses "over the ramparts you tosses, the scent of yuor skin and some foreign flowers..." This is actually an amazing image. If you think of a city or castle under seige, they will toss those big hooks over the wall so they can scale the wall and invade the city. "tied to a brick..." I just have this strong image of her tossing her scent and some flowers over the wall, using a brick as a weight to get it over the wall. In my image, the brick and everything isa actually attached to her hair... | |

No, not every song on the album is about Kurt - there are many surprisingly upbeat songs on this album and obviously songs about post-Kurt relationship. However, it is ridiculous to claim a woman isn't going to write any songs about her husband who committes suicide. I don't care if it was 2 days later or 20 years later. That was a huge event in her life and although the album was released 4 years after his death, I guarantee she was writing all through that 4 year period. As somebody already pointed out, Kurt was in fact in Rehab in Malibu the week before his suicide. He jumped over the wall and escaped and was not seen again until he was found dead. If anything I would say the first verse is about his near death overdose in Italy that prompted his going into rehab in Malibu. The second verse deals with how she is going to help him - not realizing that she failed. So, the song is about drugs, addiction an drehab in general, but Kurt is definitely the main theme. That said, I think Malibiu and Northern Star are about Kurt. Again, an artist is going to write about their dead spouse - it is natural - it is the way she needs to express her grief and move on with her life. I haven't listened to the album in a while, but there may be one other song about or at least strongly influenced by his suicide. The rest is not. Celbrity Skin (the song) is about her as a singer, becoming an actress and the abuse she took from the anti-fans and the press. Let's get something straight, because I think she wrote a couple songs about Kurt, does not mean I am disrespecting her. I think she is an amazing song writer and that shows on "Live through this" and "celebrity skin". She writes her own lyrics and sings her own songs. No she doesn't write all of her own music -lead singers rarely do these days. Who do you think wrote all the music for the Stones? It wasn't Mick. Why do you think Guns n Roses never released a new album after Use You Illusion 1 & 2??? Because Izzy Stradlin wrote all the music and he quit after the albums were recorded. So, do I think Love had help writing the music??? Hell yeah, but I think Eric Erlandson is responsible for most of that help. On Celebrity Skin, on a few songs you can also hear the Go-Gos vibe introduced by credited collaborator - darn can't remember her name - anyway, she wrote most of the Go-Gos music. (Coffey?). So, yes, Courtney writes great songs and I respect her talent and love the album, and no I do not think even half the songs on the album are about him. That doesn't mean she NEVER wrote a song about the man she constantly referred to as her sould mate. Get real people. She obviosly did and we have a beautiful album to show for it. |

| One last thing: on the U2 reference - the song came on as I was driving home since it was in my CD player. But listen to that song it just seems to fit the event so well. | |

I read an interview after the album came out where Courtney swears the song is about Seattle (the Northern Star) and not about Kurt. However, I think she is either lying to the interviewer or to herself. Just listening to the pain in her voice and the rawness of the lyrics, it is obviously about Kurt. I think "Northern Star" can have a dual meaning - one being Kurt and one being Seattle and thus the changes in the chorus. It may also be about Seattle, but primarily Kurt: "He's so cold, he will ruin the world tonight" When people die, their bodies become cold. His death ruined her world and many believe ruined the world of music at that time. Also ruined the world for all of us that we will not get any more music from him. Here is a quite literal reference to "his grave" "And I knew, the fire and the ashes of his grave" - which makes sense since he was creamated and she carried some of his ashes with her in a stuffed bear. There is also a lot of resentment in the song. This song is amazing on so many levels and like all good art, it can mean different things to different people. That is the beauty of good art. To me, the U2 song "Walk On" will always be about 9/11. However, the album was released months before 9/11. I just happened to be listening to that song on the way home from work (we were sent home early). I also agree about the line "run to the pines" - i never thought that was a coincidence that Nirvana's MTV performance ended with "Where did you sleep last night" which contains the line "in the pines, in the pines, where the sun don't ever shine" etc. |

| Duran Duran – So Long, Suicide Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| This song is basically about Kurt Cobain. The music even has a soft versus and a heavy chuga-chuga refrain to pay homage to Nirvana's sound. This isn't really speculation, I read in an interview that simon wrote it after Kurt's suicide and the death of some other rockers - it is meant to be a positive song - as in life can be hard but don't give up. The line you cite - is kind of "i love your music, and want more, but you threw is away, and I don't plan to" type sentiment. | |
