IXNAY FUCKING RULES!!!!!!!!! The Offspring rule in general, but Ixnay may be my second all time favorite album, Behind Green Day's Insomniac. Thats quite an accomplishment, since ive probably heard close to 100 albums in their entirety. The only explaination i see to why it didnt do well in the first place was that it was so radically different from Smash. PPl expected them to come out with another smash the same way that ppl expected GD to come out with another Dookie. Also, switching to a major record label didnt help. All their punk purist fans were pissed about it.
Anyway, this is a great song. i like the seriousness to it, the emotion, the angst. There are no bad songs on Ixnay, but this is one of the Upper echeleon songs on the album. |

December Underground is a place where the lonely can find love and compainionship. This is about 2 seperate ppl who have had lonely lives, and then when they meet in this "place", they fall in love. The song is sung in first person, but not from a person.Decemberunderground, the "time and place" as davey put it, is singing this song. The first line introduces the ppl into decemberunderground, kind of welcomes them in. Beautiful song, one of my favs on the album. Miss Murder is better tho. |

I hate ppl who say that Offspring and Green Day sold out. Selling out is when a band stops playing the music THEY want to play and start playing music MUSIC INDUSTRIES want them to play. If they r still making music that they want to make, despite what the "Style" is or the genre, they aren't sellouts. Remember that being in a band is their JOB!!!!!! This is how they earn their living, they have every right to make money off of it. I don't think this song applies ONLY to girls. Guys use chicks too. However, men are generally more sex driven, so its easier for a girl to manipulate a guy with sex then the other way around. Most guys wont turn down a chance to screw a hot chick.( i kno I Wouldn't in a million years;D)
Also, girls who KNOW they are hot do tend to use that as an advantage over us guys. Most girls expect their boyfriends to buy them shit and take them out to places. And in return, we get laid, which isn't exactly a fair trade, cus im sure the girls dont mind the sex TOO much, if u kno what im saying. basically, the girls get stuff and sex. I only started listening to punk rock recently. I was always a classic rock guy, mostly floyd and zep and shit. They i heard Boulevard of Broken Dreams off of Amercan Idiot and loved it. Now, Green Day may be my fav band of all time. As for Blink, only ever heard one of their songs up to this point, and thats All the Small Things (Which I've heard is abut penises lol). I really cant tell u who is better cus i haven't heard Blink.
I do believe that GD may not care for Blinks style in music. Gd was trying to act more mature at that point and from what ive heard blink has always been kind of stupid humor type, which is ok but the opposite of what GD was trying at the time.

Ian always introduced this song as "A blues for the man upstairs". Its very pro-god, but it criticized the corrupt organized religeon that fixes his image in a way that believing anything else is impossible. people can't formulate thier own opinions about god because they are brought up in thier specific religeon and are taught that "this is the way it is, no ifs, ands, or buts. If you don't agree, you are wrong, and you are going to be nice and warm in hell for all eternity." Ian felt that god was inside of all of us, and we should communicate with Him how we see fit, not how the church tells us.
Kick ass song, second best flute work in any of their songs behind the solo in Locomotive Breath. This one may even be better. Ian plays the flute so well, that I wish i had known about them about 6 years ago when i had a chance to learn an instrument in grade school.
Just a tinny little fact, Ian only learned how to play the flute 6 months before the bands 1st album came out. |

btw, this song was how Ian got revenge on Mick Abrahams. Mick was a member of the band on their first album. he was a blues purist, but Ian wanted to try other forms of music (Rock, Folk, and electric). Mick also didn't get along with Clive Bunker, and left the band after the album. Ian was pissed off beyond belief, and wrote this song, cus Mick was a little on the hefty side.
P.S. the guy who replaced him was Martin Barre, who now has the second lingest tenure of any member Beside Ian. He is one of my favorite guitarists of all time, along with Jimmy Page and David Gilmour. Anybody who disagrees can F*** me sideways:b |

About the gay thing:
Anybody who thinks that Jethro Tull is actually the name of a band member has no credibility in my opinion. Jethro Tull was an English farmer, pioneer, and an inventor. He invented the seed drill, which helped farmers immensly. When the band was starting out, they weren't very popular, because their music wasn't exactly mainstream. They had problems getting rebookings, so they changed thier name often to fool the owners of clubs. they got suggestions from their various managers, and one was a history buff who suggested "Jethro Tull". that night, the owner of the bar they were playing actually liked them, and rebooked them. Since it was the first time they got a rebooking, they kept that name!
There is no way this song is a bout homosexuallity. I love J-Tull and the War Child album. I have listened to BITJ many times, and know the lyrics by heart. No evidence shows any signs of being about either homosexuallity or Jesus.

Thick as a Brick is THE MOST BRILLIANTLY THOUGHT UP ALBUM EVER. Other than Ian Anderson, no one would ever try to make an entire album one song. And what makes it even better is that he did it TWICE, and both albums went to number one in the U.S. and that wasn't even where he was the most popular.
Lyrically, Thick as a Brick is the most brilliant song of all time. It criticizes society and how it conforms youngsters to it's evil ways, making them essentially parts of the machine. Society is full of conformists, and Ian hates that. Thats why his music is so ecllectic. He never wanted to sound like any other band.
If you listen to the song, the changes in pattern over the song, while necessary to keep it from being boring, make getting the meaning difficult. but if you read the lyrics, they become clearer. The trick is to pick out the metaphors.
DON'T try to read this song as a story. There is an interior story involved, but is not the main theme. It just stresses the theme.
"Thick as a Brick" is a British slang for stupidity, or more precisely, an inability to retain information. When a person is "Thick", it is referring to their skull. A thick skull prevents anything from penetrating into a brain. Therefore, someone who is thick doesn't learn well. All the information just bounces right off of them. It is NOT a compliment. In fact, it's a pretty mean thing to say to someone.

Ok, So Final cut was a concept album. I'm sorry, but i have only ever listened to one song on the album and thats Fletcher Memorial Home. It's an OK song. Doesn't make me want to listen to the rest of the album.
Anyway, I agree that the reason this song is so beautiful is because of the simplicit. I listen to Zeppelin, their hard complax riffs, and then i listen to floyd, and its a completely different feel. They take something that sounds so simple, and make it beautiful. Especially in this song and shine on. In shine on, Waters' vocals almost sound like he is crying. WYWH is the same thing. You can feel the emotion that Gilmour puts out, even though the lyrics were written by Roger. Best Rock Album EVER!!!!! |
