Damien Rice – Coconut Skins Lyrics 16 years ago
This song is consistent with a number of themes dealt with by Damien Rice. First, it is about doing whatever the hell you want and makes you feel good. To do with existentialism and the fact that we're all dead soon. Second, its about sex. The guy and the girl are thinking about having an illicit relationship. Damien rice is saying what the hell's the point in sneaking around or in not conducting the relationship if that's what they both want. In this way its a song of seduction. It's saying grow a pair (put some fire up your ass) and lets have sex. And if your so worried about what everyone else thinks, explain the pubic hairs caught in your teeth by claiming you've been licking coconut skins. Us getting it on? Nah we've just been hanging out, waiting for god to pop by, you know? cheers.

Patrick Watson – The Great Escape Lyrics 18 years ago
I think you are all wrong who say this song is about suicide. Even to say it is about the depths of despair.

For me this song is simply about 9 till 5 drudgery and the loss of freedom engendered by the advent of capitalism. If anyone has seen the the video on Youtube, the first part is like a scene out of Chaplin's 'Modern Times'. I'm not saying he's a commie or aything but it's easy to get sucked into the rat race and we all have bad days about it... that's all the great escape is about. bye to all of the noise. you don’t need to win anyways.

Richard Ashcroft – Why Do Lovers? Lyrics 20 years ago
Calls her baby and sweet honey, has obviously just screwed her because he wakes up next to her, and wants her to stay in bed... by the end he's calling her stranger. Is like he's asking why should we fall in love, just because we're lovers? Doesn't want to fall in love / commit to this person eg "Don't blame me for this sacrifice". Seems like a bad message to be giving but I think given how much he says he doesn't want to fall in love, and how much he questions the reasons "Why do lovers?" tends to suggest that he's too late and already in love.

Martin Grech – Sun Lyrics 20 years ago
To him his love is like the sun... probably the least ambiguous of any of Martin's lyrics, but such a beautiful song. I recently read of Martin Grech that although he makes incredible music, its not the kind of thing you can sing along to. I think this song proves the former and disproves the latter.

Martin Grech – Tonight Lyrics 20 years ago
An amazing song with so much meaning that I'm not sure what it is lol. The line 'Joking aside, I worry about you' is a bit special. I dont know of anyone else using such poignant tragi-comic lyrics like that at the moment. I just think the guys a prodigy and genius.

Martin Grech – Only One Listening Lyrics 20 years ago
Perhaps about being able to appreciate and understand someone who is completely lost to the world, because he himself is similarly lost. He is the 'only one listening' for that reason. "You're me as much as I am". By the by a brilliant and beautiful song, which sums up the feelings one has when in love of being the only person who understands and accepts that person for exactly who and what they are.

Muse – Sing for Absolution Lyrics 20 years ago
Just a point that video actually ends that they arrive on Earth as can be seen from the big ben etc. I think the point of the video is in making the viewer think the band are trying to escape Earth to avoid the ice age but then show at the end that they were escaping from somewhere else, i.e. they had already abandonned earth. Which is quite a simple idea, and more importantly little to do with the lyrics. I therefore dont think that using the video to analyse the lyrics works. I also dont think its to do with god, but who knows I could be wrong.

Coldplay – A Rush of Blood to the Head Lyrics 20 years ago
Most sentiments expressed seem sensible, but most suggest that its about a guy trying to get a girl back, as if he's done things to hurt her. Entirely possible I suppose, but I don't view it like that. I like to think of the two characters not as a formal couple per se, but as an ad hoc pairing of two people running from their mistakes and finding comfort in being reckless together. Just for the sake of things. Love each other for this reason but only see each other ad hoc, finding temporary satisfaction in the things they have in common. The point is that the things in common are bad things, the mistakes; and they way they get over them is by being spasmodic and bohemian.

Probably a bit fanciful as an explanation, but it works for me, finding hard to agree that he's trying to get her because it always we rather than I and you (unless in the context of their being together).

"I'm gonna buy a gun and start a war" not for her but for his own satisfaction, BUT "If you can tell me something worth fighting for" why not do it together.

Its a sad song but I think this is because he is lost, and the happiness comes from finding his solace in someone who's equally so.

José González – Save Your Day Lyrics 20 years ago
Just can't believe having roamed this sight for a while that no one has anything to say about this song! My favourite from the album and its mainly the lyrics which make it such a god song. It for me sums up the genius of Jose, in being both hauntingly sinister such as "Poke the body with a sick/ Roll it down/ Ignore the moaning as it tumbles to the ground" and simultaneously comfortably uplifting "Be brave and save your day". Finishes as beautifully as it starts ominously "the grave looks cold but were still young/ Were still young". Great stuff.

Martin Grech – Holy Father Inferior Lyrics 20 years ago
This is not quite my favourite of all Martin Grech's songs, but as a single track it is a technical masterpiece. I don't know any other artist who can build so much tension in a piece of music, whilst being so eloquent and understated in the process. To then go on and release all that perfectly crafted tension so wildly and organically; as hauntingly harmoniously as Martin does... This is undoubtedly the work of an authentic genius and I can't listen to the whole of this song without feeling a hole in my stomach, a lightness of head and a race of my heartbeat.

The lyrics are about the intricasies of family values, how they can weigh you down and consume you. There is a recognition that ultimate trust is given up to the blood line, whether intentionally or not; and captures the meloncholic feelings of betrayal and the morbid side of an involunatry faith in something which could turn out to be entirely valueless.

It is for me about the boy who only knew trust, who becomes newly doubting and despairing, and is now failed by all that he previously believed in: now has no-where to turn except inwards.

Martin Grech – Push Lyrics 20 years ago
You can be as stupid and pathetic as you want to be, but still the most valuable thing you own. Lose yourself and there really is nothing left. Hide yourself away, push everything aside, bury yourslef in pitty, lose yourself in the world, do whatever: but keep doing it; keep living: why not? This song for me is about finding comfort in a contradiction, finding yourself in nothing but being unable to lose yourself in nothing.

Martin Grech – Ill Lyrics 20 years ago
At the end of the album this song comes as a hypathetical solution to the prolonged, perpetual pain and desperation of previous tracks. It is ultimately about giving up. Losing faith, giving up on life - giving up on hope. Sounds depressing when read as a lyric; but I'd maintain of its only being a hypathetical exploration of an end. The gentle guitar, that the song is so brief and the fact that it comes 10 minutes after the rest of the album, all serve to give it an ephemeral, dream-like quality.

It should be viewed then, not as a morbid conclusion to an erstwhile uplifting album, but as a contrasting suggestion of what is worse than carrying on through the pain. In this respect it can be seen as an entirely uplifting song in its own right; one which seems to float angelicly above the realities of the rest of the album. One gets the feeling with Martin, that anything else would be too simple. Typically ambiguous and written when he was 16!

Martin Grech – Open Heart Zoo Lyrics 20 years ago
I think he's saying you need to forget whatever you know, or think you know; forget what you want, or what you think you want; because whoever you are, no one has a completely clear and honest perspective on things; but rather, is subjected to the impressions, lies and doctrines of others. Time to be open minded about things in order to see more clearly; but the only thing thats certain is that nothing is.

Martin Grech – Death Of A Loved One Lyrics 20 years ago
Also after this song on 17:00 "I am ill", one of the simplest tracks on the album, also one of the most hauntingly beautiful. Written when he was 16! This guy's a prodigy. Lyrics roughly as follows:

I am ill,
I am deathly ill and well
I am sick again,
I am ill,
I am sick of being ill.

Up, up, up,
Don't give up;
Make this stop.

I am ill,
I am deathly ill and well
I am sick again,
I am ill,
I am sick of being ill.

Up, up, up,
I give up;
Make it stop.

Call up the hospital make me a bed,
Reception staff say I'm better of dead.
Movement suggests that I am still alive:
With my head in my hands I've lost my taste for life.

Ooh ooh oooh oh ah.

Martin Grech – An End Lyrics 20 years ago
The juxtoposition of good and bad in these lyrics; and at times of life and death, is simultaneously harrowing and uplifting "Don't rest/ Live" and "No more aching back/ No more flesh and bones". Pure genius. Has to be heard for full appreciation; his voice takes it to another level.
