First of all, Illmatic isn't an artist. It's the name of Nas's first cd, considered a hip-hop classic by many. Second, I think the meaning of this song is pretty obvious...just more commercial shit made by a rapper that won't be remembered 4 years from now...God, this song is awfull! The lyrics are repetetive and obnoxious, and I find it depressing that over half the kids in my school walk the halls singing this song and snapping their fingers. Hip-hop has gotten so shitty over the past decade or so. I think most of the rock fans who posted here judge the entire rap genre on this and other rap artists on Mtv and BET. The truth is, rap/hip-hop was an awesome genre back in the 80's and early 90's before it became commercialized and formulatic. In fact, music in general has gone downhill incredibly in the past few years(with a few exceptions of course...) You want to listen to good hip-hop? Try some ol-school or underground MCs. Only a tiny tiny percentage of today's rappers are actually any good. My recomendations--->A Tribe Called Quest, Common, Diamond & the Phsycotic Neurotics, The Fugees, Grandmaster Flash, Hieroglyphics, Jurassic 5, Little Brother, Masta Ace, Mos Def, Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth, The Pharcyde, Public Enemy, The Roots, Souls Of Mischief, Talib Kweli. Hell, even Kanye West is better than this bullcrap. |

I'm sure I'm just repeating what people before me have said, but for some reason, I'm begining to hear this song all over the radio even a few years after its release, so I have to say something... Is it me, or does Ashlee seem a tad ungrateful to her older sister? Here in this song, she claims that living in Jessica's shadow was oh so difficult, but do you honestly think she would be famous now were it not for her older sister? I don't like Jessica or her music, but at least she had to actually work to get where she is today. Ashlee, however, sort of just popped up and sold millions of records, a feat that Jessica has never accomplished. I don't know If that should make me laugh or cry... All I'm saying is that Ashlee seems to be looking for sympathy that does not exist. She's all rich and famous now only because of her sister, so why complain about the one person who got you where you are? What pisses me off is that there are actually people older than me who enjoy listening to her music...and because of the fact that she can't sing to save her life. Her voice is digitaly altered on her cds. And please, all of you Ashlee fans, don't say "WhY DiiD YoU lOOk tHiiS Up iiF YoU DoN't LiiKE iiT???" I looked it up because it's being shoved down my throat, and I need somewhere to vent. "Don't feel sorry for me..." Don't worry Ashlee, I never did. |

| This song is incredible. I guess he's saying that he knows how talented he is and he needs only himself to reassure him of that.("I'ma look in the mirror if I need some help") No one can bring him down because he knows not everyone will like his music.("there'll always be hatas that's the way it is") I love it! | I agree with lucyb85. I think this song is just saying that sometimes you have to know when to hold back and walk away. "That's why I slipped out the back before you knew I was there...every single time I was around I'd just bring you down" sounds like he's running away or something. idk, thats just my opinion. | |
