It's a stunning song. There's definately a theme of death: he feels trapped and dying will release him, "You are free! You are free! You are freezing." demonstrates this beautifully. |

i'm not quite sure what to make of this song, it's melancholy presented in an odd sort of way. i think it might be how he doesn't want to be associated with this girl's family because she's died "I don't wanna stay and hang around /
And I don't wanna tell anyone else about my life"
, but is obliged to when he's struggling a little bit himself "I don't want you to leave me here alone, all right". not sure, maybe i'm reading too much into it. |

I adore this song. It's the way he has written all these complicated thoughts in such a stunningly poetic, painfully honest way. It has to be some of Conor Oberst's most beautiful work. |

this could be interpreted as about pete, but i dont think it is. everyone thought music when the lights go out was about pete and carl but it's just an interpretation. i'd say this is more likely just a love song. it's good, though :D |

Kathy with a K's Song is a million times better, this version doesn't have the same sort of rawness and honesty to it + is actually quite awful. Conor Oberst's music seems far too personal for anyone to cover to the same extent. I really don't understand the people who say that Conor's vocals ruin the song, it's his song in the first place + yes, it's not flawless but it's sung with proper emotion. And what's with changing the title? Very irritating. |

+ i haven't heard the cover but i agree with what someone said earlier, it is wrong that someone should cover conor's music. i mean, you can mimic the sound and the lyrics but it takes away that personal element that kind of makes his music. |

| Bright Eyes – An Interview with Conor Oberst Lyrics

Haha this makes me laugh so much... :D
Radio: It is, it is. How about this Arienette, how does she fit in to all of this?
Conor: I’d prefer not talk about it, in case she’s listening.
Radio: Oh, I’m sorry, I didn’t realize she was a real person.
Conor: She’s not, but I made her up.
Radio: That’s funny you’d say that, do you think that . . .
Conor: Do you ever hear things that aren’t really there?
Radio: I’m sorry, what?
:D |

| Saves the Day – Monkey Lyrics

This song was probably influenced by drug use, by the sounds of the lyrics.
It's about falling apart emotionally, the central image of the monkey being the problems that you carry around with you.
He's debating about himself in himself and is almost scorning himself for letting 'the monkey' take over.
I love this song, it's among my favourites by STD. It screams desperation, confusion and agression but is still makes me want to dance a bit. :D |

| The Strokes – 12:51 Lyrics

i love julian casablancas' calmness as he sings, you don't get that all that often with bands and i think it adds to what they are. it really comes through in 12:51 because the lyrics are quite chatty and laid back. oh and it's about the moment before sex, but i think that's already been established.
this song makes me smile :] |

This song is great, i've listened to it loads and i'm still not bored of it.
He's finding their conversations boring and is fed up with the normal chit chat - 'hows the weather?'.
i thought some of these lyrics were different until i read this. what i was thinking makes no sense at all :\ |

| Bright Eyes – We Are Nowhere and It's Now Lyrics

This song is amazing. I love the way how it flicks between telling a story and all these desperate images. It's stunning at the end, the yellow bird line does it for me.
"I've been sleeping so strange at night
Side effects they don't advertise
I've been sleeping so strange
With a head full of pesticide"
I'm probably stating the obvious but I think that's about anti-depressants. |

| Bright Eyes – It's Cool, We Can Still Be Friends Lyrics
| 20 years ago
|
It's on about a relationship coming to it's end, both he and she know it's ending but haven't acted on it. He is having a harder time letting go than she is.
This isn't Conor's most lyrically good song but i think the simplicity of the words add to the effect of them.
For me this song is all in the way it's sung. Nearing the end there's so much emotion in his voice it's almost painful to listen to. |

| Bright Eyes – At the Bottom of Everything Lyrics

I love this song! The intro adds to it, definately, but it's a brilliant song anyhow. The imagery he uses is clever and makes it a beautiful song.
"While my mother waters plants, my father loads his gun" - fantastic. |
