onomatopoeia, in reply to your last comment: no, not every song on here is about death. i didnt say that, dont go jumping to conclusions. it seems your literal way of thinking and analysing each word approach has decieved you. back to the song..i know why they named the album funeral. dont you think the album name is the summary of it's songs. so therefore the songs reflect that. i am stating such obvious things here, but clearly, you don't seem to get the message. and yes, this song is about death. try not to be so one-leveled about things, look a little deeper. you have chosen your user name onomatopoeia, so here's another basic standard word you would have learnt in your first year of secondary school: metaphor. ever heard of one? you should definately look it up. oh im sorry, i better put some literal examples up for you: words in this song that link with death: buries, crying, sleeping, hymn, remember, ashes. i think thats an awful lot for a song that's 100% not about death dont you? yes it sounds like a love song, definately(!) particularly lines: "And if my parents are crying" "Sleeping in my head" "Then we think of our parents, Well, what ever happened to them" "And spread the ashes of the colors Over this heart of mine" just proof to confirm that i did read the lyrics before posting, as you wrongly suggested. |

inpraiseoffolly, all lyrics say something. whether you understand or relate to them or not. just because you don't like something, doesn't mean it doesn't mean anything to the rest of the world. the lyrics arent the stone roses best, i will admit. ian's voice is however terrific in this, and the tune is catchy and happy. maybe ian didn't need to say much more than that in this song. going into too much detail isn't what the songs about. it's about saying your piece and fucking off. repetition is also linked with the teenage "nothing can change my mind" sort of view. sometimes simplicity is better, never heard that phrase, inpraiseoffolly? |

IT'S ABOUT THEIR FAMILIES DYING AND THEY ARE ALL THAT'S LEFT OF THIS SMALL CIVILIZATION OF PEOPLE...and the only thing that keeps them going is the happiness in each other and playing music. yes, romance does come into it but you've missed the main point. soms members of the families fall in love with other members of other families and have kids. but the've forgotton everything about their past life and can't even remember names to call their babies. they think of their dead parents and their old bedrooms, it's just flashes of memories, which biuld a beautiful, sad story of death, love and rememberance. ps. users who got it right were: clairvoyance , breno and rhons. if you read back their comments they have the idea sorted. |

Mercsl55amg haha well said. Yes MM isn't that good, although i'll give him credit for his covers. Such as tained love and this song. They are his only good songs, possibly because they are covers and written by people more talented than himself. For all of the people badmouthing the eurythmics then i believe you shouldn't be complaining about people badmouthing MM, as it's hypocritical. The eurythmics version was fantastic, so no matter who was to cover it, it would still sound great. Origional songs are always better, everyone knows that. But yes, this song is good, i like it. MM is bareable, but there are much more talented artist's out there. There's real music out there. |

First of all, mode000 and byrnetom, all of us genuine stone roses fans can obviously see its about the devil, i mean the repetition on those lines are so obvious. selling your soul - devil. it's a massive, obvious link. that's probably why it's not worth mentiong. cos true stone roses fans know that it's so obvious it's about the devil. I MEAN DUHH!! however, there is NO mention or indication of drug use, so shut up. im with fez on this one. I think Ian Brown knows what his own song means and he said that its about people selling theirselves and being bad and do things they shouldn't in order to be adored. I heard it's about ian's brother who was in the army, 'pack on my back in aching, straps seem to cut me like a knife' and 'these boots were made for walking' are lines which could certainly back this up. maybe he's emphasising on the fact that people want glory for fighting for their country, 'I'm no clown I won't back down' is the opinion of people who don't want to be called a coward for not going to war. It's what propaganda did to people, made them believe they were cowards for not fighting (or should we say dying?) for their country. But really, the're not going to get glory for going to war, the're getting a fool's victory. Fool's gold. |

yes i agree this is the best stone roses song definately. i think mattp is very right along with zidanetribal, but one thing i dont understand is why call it 'love spreads' if its about pondering the traditional idea of jesus being a man. 'love spreads her arms, waits there for the nails' ? why is love spreading the arms of the messiah? i thought it was one of the executioner men that put the nails in jesus, hardly someone who is likely to be spreading love. any ideas anyone? |
