This song is so amazing. " the working man you have been pissing on..." holy shit. this song gives me the chills the instrumental is so different than what bright eyes are nknown for, but its beautiful. I think bright eyes wanted this song to have a 70's influence. Since it is a war protest song/ govornment protest. But it rocks. and that is all that matters. I hope bright eyes puts this one on the next album. Because its beautiful. |

Rofl i love all of the negative comments for this song. Yes, this cd, or song isnt like much of Rilo's old stuff, but isnt that what makes a band good, not having the same sound to everyone of thier cd's? They did an awesome job with this cd. And to the comment about a band being dead bc you can dance to their music... I am able to dance to about 40 % of all of rilo's stuff, so they must have been dead a long time ago. Fuck all you rilo haters. |

The good that wont come out " Lets talk about all of our friends who lost the war and all of the novels that have yet to be written about them..." could also be a reference to Elliot Smith |

I also get mad when artists are talking about a person with a drug or alcohol problem and are quick to assume it is about Connor. I think that it is a general reference about any person who is in that situation. But It would be cool if it was about Connor. |

"So the fortunate kids, yeah they left on their lights
And they stuck up their noses and started some fights
Their parents all cackled at dirt on my hands
While my father was slaving, my mother explained it
Sometimes that's just how it is"
So true. I love Tilly because I can relate to them and they can relate to me. I love that they talk about how the " fourtunate kids" left on their lights bc my whole life my parents yelled at me for leaving the lights on bc the electric bill is so high.
I think this song is about living in a middle class society and how beautiful life can be even though you dont have much. |

I agree with "off the path". But it is inevitable for any lyricist to use metaphoric references in their work. I am very satisfied with Bright eyes' version of this song. They totally made it their own. Love them both though. |

| Bright Eyes – A Song to Pass the Time Lyrics

Connor Oberst offers us an array of beautiful, but sometimes confusing songs. Although he doesnt have the greatest voice, we learn to set that aside because his lyrics are genious. This song to me is talking about how as humans we see people suffering and wonder how we can make things better for them. "But all I have for the moment is a song to pass the time
A melody to keep me from worrying
Oh, some simple progression to keep my fingers busy." These lines simply explain how connor himself deals with the catastrophe of not being able to help these people. Or himself. He uses music to escape from that empty feeling. Thats just what I take out of it. |

Wow. this song oh, my god... my favorite song i just cant stop listening. I love the way he uses they symbolism about winter and spring. Winter,(connor) things are dying, in spring they are coming back to life ( connor & his nephew) I wishi had connor's genious. "i wrote this for a baby who is yet to be born......." i feel what he feels. My neice was born into a fucked up family and you jsut hate that they have to go through the same shit you had to go through and it hurts. I fucking love this song. brilliant. |

I love when connor puts in random things in his songs, like what he did at the end of this song. They are saying Jesus and laughing and coughing and saying make it stop. This song is so damn beautiful. Whenever i listen to a bright eyes song i just want to burt with emotion, he makes me think about my life in different ways. Its amazing how depressing songs like this can make me feel so incredible. I wish connor knew that. |

I honestly fucking love this song. The backround music is absolutly amazing and so is connor. The back round music kinda reminds me of the old 50's music played on a dance floor. "But if I could act like this was my real life And not some cage where I've been placed Well then I could tell you The truth like I used to And not be afraid of sounding fake" I love this line, because it sums up the whole song. Connor oberst is not homosexual, contrary to some of your beliefs, and if he was, more power to him. |
