Burn Rubber Lyrics
But if you turn the porch light out
And let the marble night withdraw
You can smoke a cigarette on the wooden steps
The mosquitos are not vampires
The moon is not your mother
Even if she is preparing for a total eclipse
Get behind the wheel
Stay in front of the storm
Get behind the wheel
Stay in front of the storm
The clouds they dream disorder
They make faces they make mud
On some ancient order which is no longer in force
The sugar bowl is full of ants
And your sister is a dumpy mess
And you're cutting off your head to spite your shoulders
Get behind the wheel
Stay in front of the storm
Get behind the wheel
Stay in front of the storm
Get behind the wheel
Stay in front of the storm
Get behind the wheel
Stay in front of the storm
And let the marble night withdraw
You can smoke a cigarette on the wooden steps
The mosquitos are not vampires
The moon is not your mother
Even if she is preparing for a total eclipse
Stay in front of the storm
Get behind the wheel
Stay in front of the storm
They make faces they make mud
On some ancient order which is no longer in force
And your sister is a dumpy mess
And you're cutting off your head to spite your shoulders
Stay in front of the storm
Get behind the wheel
Stay in front of the storm
Stay in front of the storm
Get behind the wheel
Stay in front of the storm

Great song. I always saw the lyrics as Simon making fun of metaphorical lyrics, the way he speaks of mosquitos not being vampires and your mother not being the moon.
I love this song. I'm looking forward to go to the bus stop while listening to it. I'm sure I'll miss the bus. :)
Bright Eyes works magic on this track. The version released on 'love nothing' is kind of Digital Ash esque, but if you can find the live acoustic performance he does of it is truly stunning. His verion is just under a minute. It's obvious listening to Simon Joyner's work that he has profoundly influenced the songwriting of Conor Oberst.
I agree with "off the path". But it is inevitable for any lyricist to use metaphoric references in their work. I am very satisfied with Bright eyes' version of this song. They totally made it their own. Love them both though.
