placebo-wow, that was a good take on it. I just always love the musical end of it(the words fit perfectly, don't get me wrong)cause I always thought the words were just Wayne tripping his balls off talking about aliens, and barns, and babies, and frogs, and getting drunk, and needles, and god, and king bugs, etc.......but you managed to pull together a somewhat coheisive meaning (don't get cocky!) |

| The Flaming Lips – Pompeii Am Götterdämmerung Lyrics
| 19 years ago

Pompeii is the old roman city that got covered by the leavings of a volcano, and no trace of the city was found for about 1500 years. Gotterdammerung means basically the beginning of the end.
I think this is a recount of a couple just doing their thing in pompeii that day, and how the found out just how not-in-our-hands this life really is, but i also think it is a warning of sorts that the end for us is near(gotterdammerung). the couple represent the things in this life that are lovely, and it is a recognition that love and greatness still exist, and the universe does recognize love as well, but larger issues have to be addressed. The second verse assures us that lovers are going to be taken care of when the end comes. The image of "forever holding hands", the comfort we draw from our "bed", and "all our senses" being blessed. These are all soothing images that are tied to a brutal, firey end to existence.
The music alone has such a powerful sad beauty to it that it makes it hard for me to realize what the message of this song is supposed to be. But I know it weighs a ton.
btw-I fucking love this song, and the Lips! |

we are not "ending" as a person, or as a being, but we are "goin on". death is just a doorway, but deep down, all of us, Wayne, we are afraid of it, but it's ok, right? |

| The Flaming Lips – My Cosmic Autumn Rebellion (The Inner Life as Blazing Shield of Defiance and Optimism as Celestial Spear of Action) Lyrics

I believe the key phrase in the song is, "so don't you believe them, they'll destroy you with thier lies, they only see the obvious, the see the sun go down but they don't see it rise" there are always exceptions to the rule and things going on cosmically that are so beautiful and working with us right when we need them to, even though they shouldn't be, or it doesn't make sense scientifically i.e. "this bird didn't leave you, it stayed through the wintertime". never lose hope. such a beautiful song, inspiring to say the least. once again, great electric guitar riff in the middle and at the end, so simple, yet so powerful |

I can hear so much of John Lennon in ES's songs. This one is no exception. It's recently become one of my favorites. I don't know if there's any other versions, but the one I have is very stripped down, which I think fits the song perfectly. I used to listen to ES all the time when he was alive, and now that he's gone it's almost too painful. When I was feeling my most sad and low I would listen to him and he would absorb all of my pain. I lost a close friend when he died, and a large part of my life, and I didn't not know him personally at all, that's a powerful artist(person). |

Can't get this song out of my head. It is so beautful. I played it for my mother and she actually started to cry. Not many lyrics but they are so damn profound! Love is the most valuable thing we have, and death is the only sure thing. The ending lines "somthing is ending within us" and "Feeling yourself disinegrate" are so sad and powerful. This song is truly amazing |

B12-Just read the quarrel between you and Atreyudabest (or whatever), very entertaining. It was cool because I know nothing about either of the bands you were talking about, haven't heard one note by them. It's funny that you didn't know she was a girl. |

The end lines of, "I couldn't really think of anything to say", and how lightning strikes the postman, "all the time", almost suggests a 'why even bother' type attitude, to me. Fucking awesome song. The whole Clouds Taste Metallic LP is phenominal. I think it's the absolute peak of their old sound, and Wayne's song writing really starts to take off from this album on, (not saying his music prior to this album wasn't good). Definatly my favorite LP by the Lips, and way up there on my all time favorite list. "Postman" and "Fetus" I believe are the nucleus of the LP, they just blow me away! |

Whiffet- wow, what a synic (is that how you spell that?) the music is beautiful, and the "stupid, trite questions" are still unanswered, and that's always going to be something to write about, and the answers are always going to be longed for. |

I think this is more like a mission statment than a song, I don't know. It is very touching. Listen to this song and then listen to "Eveythings Explodin'" off the Oh My Gawd!! album. It's crazy the changes Wayne and the band have gone through. |

the chourus, or refrain "and I know it ain't gonna last" is to me the best part of the song. I love when the music in a song is very possitive and uplifting, but the lyrics are dark or negative, the chourus of the song is a great example of that, and that's what makes this song kick ass |

The fade-in and fade-out to this song might actually be better than the "meat" of the song, if you know what I mean. Classic early Floyd slow song. The song is obviously about ups and downs, life! Summed up very short and sweet in Waters' tradmark "list" style of writing. One of my favorite early Floyd tunes |

The intro piano sets the mood for this one. Once again, going along with this album, It's obviosly very emotional, "and though they were sad, they rescued everyone". This reflects putyting aside your personnal behaivor to help people out, and once you do that..........."the limits now are none!!!"
let your love sound loud! |

I don't think that any flaming lips songs are jibberish at all, unlike a lot of the people who submit entries on this website! I think Wayne is an incredibly intelligent guy who has gone through a lot of changes. I think that this song is probably about how somtimes things are just out of our hands, no matter how hard we try to force them. So basically it's about fate. Some things are supposed to happen, and in this case, some aren't |
