(Sigh.) When I wrote about this song previously, I interpreted everything anally. There is not a wrong or right answer to what the song is about, which makes it such a good song. It's whatever you interpret it to be. I hate that people actually said "You all are stupid. It's obviously (insert some redundant remarks here)" In conclusion, this IS a SONGMEANING website. Please don't post anymore comments like "OMG OMG. I love this song!!! && this band!! LOLZ." Touche. |

My interpretation: "It's these substandard motels On the on the corner of 4th and Freemont Street Appealing, only because they are just that unappealing Any practiced Catholic would cross themselves upon entering The rooms have a hint of asbestos And maybe a just dash of formaldehyde And the habit of decomposing right before your very eyes Along with the people inside" This verse is very easily translated. He's talking about a cheap hotel and the people AT the hotel. "Oh, what a wonderful caricature of intimacy Oh, what a wonderful caricature of intimacy" This verse, is also very easy to understand. Caricature, of course, means "A grotesque imitation or misrepresentation" of intimacy. Which, goes with this song perfectly. "Tonight tenants range from a lawyer and a virgin Accessorizing with a rosary tucked inside her lingerie She's getting a job at the firm come Monday The Mrs. will stay with the cheating attorney, Moonlighting aside, she really needs his money Oh, what a wonderful caricature of intimacy, yeah" Tenants, of couse, means the people occupying the hotel-- the lawyer and the virgin. A rosary is a form of devotion to the Virgin Mary, chiefly consisting of three sets of five decades each of the Hail Mary, each decade preceded by the Lord's Prayer and ending with a doxology-- An expression of praise to God, especially a short hymn sung as part of a Christian worship service. So this must mean she is Catholic. In the first verse of the song, the writer (Ryan) says "Any practiced Catholic would cross themselves upon entering," which must mean that she was unpracticed. "She's getting a job at the firm come Monday" must mean that she's getting a job at the lawyer's office. As we know, moonlighting means to work at another job, often at night, in addition to one's full-time job, which in this case, must mean her other job, she needs the money. "And not to mention The constable, and his proposition For that "virgin" Yes, the one the lawyer met with on "strictly business" As he said to the Mrs. Only hours before Well after he had left As she was fixing her face in a compact There was a terrible crash (There was a terrible crash) Between her and the badge She spilled her purse and her bag And held a "purse" of a different kind Along with the people inside" This verse is quite confusing, but when broken down is simple. "And not to mention, the constable and his proposition" Here, the police officer made her a proposition--An offer of a private bargain, especially a request for sexual relations--to have sex with HIM, too, or to be arrested for prositution. When he writes "for that 'virgin'", he's talking about her religion. When he writes "there was a terrible crash", he is talking about her bumping into the police officer. When he writes "Between her and the badge She spilled her purse and her bag And held a "purse" of a different kind Along with the people inside", he's referring to the sexual relationship between her and the police officer. She didn't literally spill her purse. If she did that, he wouldn't have said purse and bag. He is talking about her morals as of being religious. And now that she's had sex with the lawyer and the police officer, she's holding a purse-- a sum of money collected as a present or offered as a prize-- along with the people at the hotel, instead of a real purse. Then, when he writes "Raindrops on roses and girls in white dresses" is supposed to stand for the good things before. But now It's sleeping with roaches (the guys who pay her to have sex with them) and taking bad chances. "At the shade of the sheets before all the stains And a few more of your least favorite things" he doesn't literally mean shade from an object. Shade can also mean a present reminder of a person or situation in the past. So when he says that he means the reminders of the the past situations before and how bad they are now in comparision to before. I think I did a fair job. It all makes sense, at least. :) |
