the word millstone is not in this song at all...the title is millstone, which is a burden, and also it is a stone that is used to grind and crush, but in the lyrics, in the chorus he says "milestone". it is a play on words. the beginning of the song is about how people used to look up to him, and how he was like, an all around great guy. also he showed those he loved that he loved them. there was never any doubt. he also says how he used to be a faithful man when he says "i was about my father's work". his father is god. he slept well because he knew that he had something to believe in. then in the chorus he is asking god to take him and fix him up because the "ship of fools" are all the nonbelievers, and non believers go to hell. he wants to be saved from that fate. he says he has a milestone around his neck which is symbolic of a turning point in his life. he would do anything for god to save him, and to put the breath of life back into his faith. the next verse is again showing how he used to be this great guy. he also mentions how his friends fell apart after he began to change. the lines about knowing the people he kissed is saying how he used to be true in relationships and stuff but now hes just hooking up with random girls and not even really caring about them at all, not even enough to remember their names. the line about making a bed and not being able to sleep in it refers to how he made this life for himself, he made his own mistakes but now he cant really live with himself, he is very troubled by his past. then he goes into the chorus again asking to be saved and how hes at a turning point in his life (which by the way came about from his friends dying in a car crash which is mentioned in sowing season). the next part: Never hit the brakes there's no time to save him, he's run out in the street anybody know his name? I think I recognize him sure it's him? running from that mistake that is two guys, or two angels talking to each other. they are saying how they shouldnt save this guy because it will take too long. he left them in his past. he seems familiar to them, like maybe he could genuinely be coming back to his faith, but they are doubting it. they say he is running from his mistakes. jesse wrote that part because people doubt he is really looking for his faith again.then he goes back into the chorus. he truly does want his faith back this is my interpretation, but i believe it is pretty close to jesse's actual intention when he wrote this song because it goes very well with the song before and the song after on the album. |

this is very long and very in depth but the song is very deep... The song is really like a prayer, a prayer with a lot of symbolism. The first line has more than one meaning. It starts off the song perfectly with multiple meanings in one line. He is talking about a girl, whether it his ex-girlfriend, or anyone, she has a pretty face. The line also refers to Jesus’ face which was on Saint Veronica’s washcloth after she washed Jesus’ face on his way up to Calvary. So as the song goes on he starts to say that he should be locked away, probably because he is going crazy and that may refer to an institute, however it also means it would be a miracle if he wasn’t condemned to hell. He begins to relate his pain and suffering to that of Jesus’. He begins to ask Jesus if he ever thought he was missing out because he went through so much pain. Jesse says how its hard to get through the night when he has no one in his bed, but that could also mean no one in his arms, and no significant other in his life. He is lonely. Jesse then goes on to say how he will not know anyone when he goes to heaven. He says that he will die alone, because he will never have anyone in his life that is really significant to him, or a lover or anything like that. He then goes on to pray to Jesus about how he is alone again, probably because his girlfriend dumped him or something along those lines. He asks Jesus what he did for the three days he was dead. This is a reference to the 3 days between Jesus’ death and resurrection. Jesus was in a tomb for 3 days. Jesse wants to know how Jesus lasted in the tomb, dead, for 3 days because he has a problem which is leaving him emotionally dead, and he knows the problem will last longer than 3 days. He says he is not afraid of death, but he is afraid of his final judgment. He asks if he will go to heaven. The reference to the gold chariot is referring to Jesus going to heaven in a gold chariot after he resurrected and finished his mission on Earth. Mary floated up to heaven, and this is referenced when Jesse asks if he will float up through the ceiling. Jesse then asks if he divides and falls apart because that is a way to ask if he is going to hell. He says that there is not enough good in him to make up for all the evil in him. I’m not sure what the ship sinking in sight of land is referring to. Maybe it means that when the time to end your journey, or your life, you come up short in the end and end up failing and going to hell. I have no idea about that part though, that is just a guess. The part about Thomas is that Thomas was the non-believer when Jesus resurrected. He had to see the holes in Jesus’ hands to believe that he came back to life. Jesse could be asking if Thomas will doubt Jesse being allowed into heaven. Jesse then says how lives are taken in the middle of the night but Jesse has been alone for a while now, so he has been able to hold in some of the evil inside of him. He says he knows how Jesus thinks he can trust Jesse, but he is afraid that his faith may not be strong enough and he fears that he may commit a terrible sin against God before he dies. He asks Jesus if he could give him a sign so that he wont even try to fight death, he will just let himself die and go up to heaven. He says that he knows Jesus comes for sinners. It says in the Bible that Jesus was put on Earth to save the sinners. His disciples were not holy men. They were all sinners who needed to be saved by Jesus. Jesus will come for sinners like Jesse. He also says that we all have the tools to commit terrible sins. We have the wood for the cross and the nails to nail him to it. the cross and nails are Jesus’ torture and hating factory. “We sleep inside of this machine” means that our worst sins are not committed because they are idle, but we are the machines in the “factory” and we have the power to kill Jesus again. Jesse questions his faith and questions how his death will go throughout the whole song. |

I was about to give an in-depth interpretation of this song, but after reading some of your interpretations, i decided to think more into my interpretation...i do, however, have the correct lyrics...the only word i am unsure of is "vie" towards the end of the song.... "well i wrote your name and burned it, see the color of the flame, and it burned out the whole spectrum as if you were everything, im just burned gold, a normal flame, i am not anything" - this is saying how she is everything to him. and he sees himself as nothing, just a normal nobody. but this girl is something special, and she in a way, completes him. "and all that i remember is the feeling of waking up, when we were kids you were the sun to which my eyes would not adjust," -this is saying how when he was younger, when they were kids, they were best friends, and he remembered waking up every day knowing she was there. he saw her as this awesome beauty (the sun), but he could never pull himself together enough to ask her out, he could never adjust to the awesomeness of her. "when we were kids i was a fountain you could never drink enough, then came all the boys who swept you up," -this is saying how he was the fountain (of youth). he never grew up. but she loved him. and she could never get enough of him. (but he never got with her because he couldnt adjust to her) "then came all the boys who swept you up, played careless with your heart, and every night there was a new girl sitting beside me in my car," -as she grew a little older, guys started taking advantage of her beauty and innocence. they broke her heart because they just wanted action. and all he could do was sit and watch her be broken time and time again because he had to deal with being lonely by being with a new girl every night. he couldnt commit to any one girl because he loved the girl in the song "something dies when you grow older, but you do the best you can," -as they grew older, the love and pain began to go away because time just started to bury it in him, but as this happened, their friendship also slowly faded. but they did the best they could to keep in touch and stay friends. they tried, but in the end the friendship died. "i am glad, i am glad, you found a good man" -he is glad that she finally found a good man, and doesnt have to deal with all the guys breaking her heart anymore. deep down he wishes he could be with her but he is moving on |

| aright...this is whats goin on...brand new has been recording for about 2 years now...theyve recorded over 50 songs...9 untitled songs leaked and jesse is really pissed about that...the songs were never meant to be demos...so jesse decided not to put any of the untitled "demos" on the album...brand new is releasing TWO albums around the beginning of summer this year...the first will most likely come out around early to mid june...the second will be relaeased a few weeks later...im from long island and this information went from cody lacey (jesse's brother) to my friend who is really good friends with cody, and my buddies told me...so yeah this info is pretty right...and thats whats happening | |

| i could be wrong, but i think this song has something to do with the media and press coverage he was getting...kurt wasnt all for being famous, and he felt violated with all the media people up his ass all the time...when he says "my favorite inside source" i think he is referring to one person specifically who probably was constantly up his ass getting in on his life and than editing things that kurt said or exaggerating what kurt did sometimes and he was the one who was "raping" kurt...he kept screwing him over and he was making kurt even more depressed because this guy was just another thing that kurt had to deal with in his already depressing life which is why he was saying "waste me" and "ill kiss your open sores" means ill forgive you...and "i appreciate your concern" means i appreciate that you care about my life, but you dont have to stick your head into it every five seconds..."you'll always stink and burn" means that the guy or people will always stink because they are like nosey rats always butting into his life so they will always stink and will eventually burn in hell...oh yeah and when he says "im not the only one" he is saying that he is not the only famous person, so leave me alone......thats just what i think | |

| isnt adam from taking back sunday british? i could be wrong but i had the idea that he was...if thats true than i think this song is talking about his girlfriend who left him for adam (a british guy) and he hates them both now...jesse and adam were once best friends growing up until jesse's girlfriend left him for adam...its also about how things are starting to get better for jesse but he hates his ex-girlfriend now because she left him for his best friend...thats pretty low...he is saying that he hopes her life is horrible from now on and also that he will never write about her again...the song is really about holding a grudge against someone who left him and he is also angry and at the same time hurt by the fact that she used to say that she loved him and needed him and missed...but now shes gone...he feels like he was nothing in her eyes...because for somebody to just drop you like that...and for your best friend...that hurts and i can understand how angry jesse can be at that...he makes it seem like he was always there for her and he really loved her but she just threw it all right in his face and went for adam......i dont know i could be wrong but i think thats what the song means...but than again i dont even know if adam is english | |

i dont think this song was intended to poke fun at emo kids, but rather to tell emo kids that they shouldnt be so depressed in life because if you think about it, your situation probably isnt that bad. i think patent pending wrote this song at a time when things were going good for them after a rough time...if you listen to the rest of their music, they are kinda emo so it doesnt make sense for them to mock emo kids. they are just saying how you shouldnt be so upset in life because they know what its like. they have been there ebfore but now they are not and they are trying to get the message across that things will get better but thats just me |
