To me the song is called elephant, because they are considered very noble, intelligent creatures. Gods even in the hindu religon. So when he says "you can't paint an elephant quite as good as she" He's saying that whoever he's with at the moment isn't as smart, graceful,--or simply---good as the new girl he's found. |

this may be completely wrong but in a way this song to me is all about him losing his sister. he says that she is sold to a shadow-older man. that he will get to play because according to history he doesnt have to claim a wife but she has to become someones. the line may have to use your hips as fodders is to me a sexual reference to get what you want and then still putting your best foot forward meaning but pretend your still made of sugar and spice. the mother hubbard reference saying that she didnt set up the right connections and that his sister needs to. to me it is a very complicated song with many meaning and interpretations. i adore this song. |

| Martha Wainwright – Bloody Motherfucking Asshole Lyrics

This is my favorite martha song by far-- the line about the mother of gloom sitting in her bedroom hits me at so many levels it almost makes me and probally other people feel as though she is singing about them and not just her self. This song addresses so many things, loneliness, depression, insecurity, not fitting in or being good enough. to me this song is all about trying to reach someones expectations but always falling short, then realizing how depressed they are making them wish that they could be someone else to make everything better. but no matter how hard they wish they are still stuck as themselves hoping that someday they'll be good enough for someone.
martha knows how to strike raw emotion. |
