i agree that "heaven" in this case is a lost love...he was having rough times with his significant other and she left for somewhere that involved a big road trip so he goes on a hitch hike to find her...the lines "no matter how cold the winter, there's a spring time ahead" meaning no matter how rough things are (cause winters can tend to be harsh) all your stress and problems will melt away (cause the spring melts the snow) |

i think its about the two brothers who make up two of the three members of RHD and how they grew up in a household where there father did a lot of drugs and maybe their mother as well and the song is about how they overcame their predisposition to those drugs...im not sure if they really did live in that sort of household but im pretty sure thats what the song is about |

i agree with CCDevlin on how it is an inner thing...however i think its more along the lines of a personal hidden life as opposed to your "safe haven" although that could be it too. basically in this guys life outside his "tree", he is some what of a push over. he lets people pick on him and laugh at him, take advantage of his gullibility, etc. etc. and when hes in his "tree" or personal life he is away from all the people who poke fun at him. "no more crowbars to my head" and in this personal hidden life, he seems to be the most powerful and he feels like hes high in the sky. kind of like the king of his personal life. however when he sees a few of his "friends" which are bullies who probably made this guy feel like they are his friends and they are really there to take advantage of him, he gets a reality check and realizes how his life sucks...the rest is basically him realizing how stupid he was to think that he was powerful and hes so high the wind shakes him and he realizes that he isn't as powerful and strong as he once thought.

the song is about surfing and wiping out...ill give you a verse to verse break down.
Verse 1 (Jack Johnson)- when you are surfing you pay attention to the forecast a lot to kind of give you an idea of how strong the rip current is and how high the waves are. but usually you go out anyways even if its flat and as you drift with the current you watch the horizon for wave peaks. And while your waiting your drifting from your personal life. and the second stanza of verse one talks about how people give each other tips and helps each other out and its pretty much like a whole community out in the line up where "nobody owns anything and everyone is free."
Chorus- This is the wipe out. The ship is you and the board. and the sound is guidance so "desperately i need a sound" is a prayer for help. the song is again a metaphor for help so that they can carry on surfing.
Verse 2 (Matt Costa)- Basically in this verse Mother Ocean plays the role of God. If you fear the ocean while your surfing you are going to wipe out and end up "at the bottom of the sea" no matter what you do. you shouldn't really be out in the line up if you arent confident enough to handle the waves that what the whole "Hi Ho" part is about telling the people who lack that confidence to leave before they get seriously hurt. and the whole dancing the waltz above the ocean is a metaphor for surfing so "...let's just dance/ waltz above the ocean" is saying forget them lets just continue surfing.
Verse 3 (Zach Gill)- The stories are surfing legends that people pass around and tell about wipe outs they have experienced and most surfers believe them. and when you do wipe out you have to touch the bottom so you can push off of it to get back to the surface. cause when your in the water after a wipe out you have no idea which way is up. so yo should try to reach the bottom so you can position yourself. and what your heart is telling is instinct which is to survive.
I do agree with koukla and i think the song is about surfing and in this case surfing (especially the wipe out) is a metaphor for getting through rough times. |

i think its about a widower...this guy is lonely cause his wife dies (first two lines) and lines 3 and 4 are pretty much how hes living in hell mourning his loss...then comes the chorus which basically says that what he said in the previous stanza doesnt really matter anymore.
now the second stanza talks about that he doesnt care anymore and how he doesnt want to be helped at all...the whole staring the sun down part ill break down for you...when you stare something down, your challenging something and sun=light and light=hope so hes challenging hope...and going blind=dark and dark=no hope so "i will challenge hope until theres no hope left"
3rd stanza is how he gets rid of the pain emotionally. through self mutilation.
and there you have it thats my interpretation...just so happens im performing this song...peace |

wow o0ver 2 years an no one commented on this...wow...this is my favorite song on Freedom but the lyrics are wrong...well theyre all right except the first verse up above doesnt exist in the song (unless its in the live version...i never heard this song live so i wouldnt know) anyways...ill give you a verse by verse break down
1st verse (not counting the fist verse up above): this guy likes to fly planes and he dies in a plane crash. in the lines "we all have to fly someday" flying is basically a metaphor for death. flyin to heaven. and it is sayng that no matter what we all have to die someday.
2nd verse: this stanza basically says how everyone is going to heaven because we really all have to sin someday...i mean how many people never cursed ever in their entire lives? none. well unless they were babies or a small child. but thats besides the point...everyone has sined once in their life...it doesnt mean theyre going to hell.
3rd verse: this is a tough one...it talks about the oil pips in alaska and how there many men working in the pipes lost their lives. i dont really know much about the alaskin pipelines but basically the message is that the lost and forgotten will be remembered someday.
4th verse: this one talks about guy in his death bed asking his wife to hold him. (this part reminds me of when my dad died. and my mom and all are familly were around him for his final miniutes and my mom was holding him) the lines "we wont have to wait someday" means that someday in the future they dont have to wait to be together again because when she dies they will be together again in heaven.
so to cap up this song is about death and heaven |
