Everlast – What It's Like Lyrics 23 years ago
I LOVE this song soooooo much. Not only is a great song, but the lyrics speak so much truth. It's got so much feeling in the way it's sung, he's got such a wonderful voice, and it neither censors not sugarcoats anything.

Don't judge, unless you know what you're judging, unless you've been there. All actions have consequences. Be caring, and sympathise. Think before you act.

I especially like the abortion message on here. That's something I have really strong opinions about, and so many people are like 'abortion is wrong'. They just need to shut up. 'God forbid you ever have to walk a mile in her shoes, coz then you really might know what it's like to have to choose'

Queen Adreena – X-ing Off The Days Lyrics 23 years ago
I'm not going to tell you the reason behind this song, when it was written, for who it was written by. I'm going to tell you what I link this song to.

This song has always linked to an ex boyfriend for me. It was a very...turbulent relationship, and an even more turbulent break up.
He would let people get close then when he realised he was opening up to them suddenly turn against them:
"You walk all over anyone who dares to be friend
Screen and yell because you deem them enenlightened"

The lines: "High upon your horse you preach and preach and preach,
Love thy fellow humans all your filthy little creeps." Just sum up his attitude to pretty much the human race apart from him, he was very condescending!!!!

"I nearly broke my back as I was handing back for you,
Half the time was hell and half a waste of time": He was very manipulative, and made me feel like I never did enough for him, so I used to try to always please him, no matter what the cost to my self-esteem. It never ever did any good.

He used to expect me to solve all his problems for him, and when I couldn't he got angry. "I do not know the answers to the universe I fear"
Also, we had an...agreement. At the time he thought he might be bi, and he was very messed up about this, so I said I'd let him experiment, only with one or two guys, we were both very young and I was in the same boat, so I made allowances. I said only ONE or TWO, and only kissing. He kissed many many many guys behind my back, then swore his undying love to me. "So drown me cold and go and find your perfect MAN my dear"

Needless to say I was a little bitter about that one.

Oh yes, it was one messed up teenage relationship.

I actually look back and laugh.

And "X-ing off the days". That refers to me crossing off each day I wasn't with him, in relief!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Queen Adreena – Weeds Lyrics 23 years ago
Again, another song I'm using right now in a drama piece for my A-levels. Me and my bloody drama eh?!

Well, the piece is about Huntington's disease, a degenerative disease of the brain. If you want to know more about it, look it up on the net, it's very interesting and extremely sad. I chose this song because HD is a genetic disease and it featured the lyrics 'was I born of infertile soil, is my seed without song.' HD will not be what the song is about, but it's interesting how well the lyrics fit.

Yet the more I researched the disease the more the lyrics fitted.

There is an anger comes off this girl, that she can't find an origin.

One of the early symtoms of HD is aggression.

The things I plant wont grow, yet the wild weeds flower in the wind and snow.

Death for victoms of HD comes early. No matter how hard they try to 'grow', they will never reach the old age that the 'weeds' or people without the disease will, without even having to try 'flower in the wind and snow'.

When will my season come?

Imagine how it must feel to know your death is looming. I know that that would be one of the biggest questions on my mind too.

Was I born of infertile soil, is my seed without song

Genetic disease. Also the knowledge that you could not have children, because if you did you risk leaving them with the same fate.

Can I not see the woods for these forests in my head?

Another early syptom is confusion and frustration

Can I not see the sunlight as I play dead?

Trying to find a ray of hope, when you know in the end, you're heading towards an unpleasant death.

And finally the chorus:
Nothing to be, nothing to prove,
Nowhere to go, nothing to lose.

Pure desperation.

I personally link this with my own battle to accept and understand my spirituality and bisexuality, 'I've been a bad girl and kissed the witches'.

You'll be glad to know I dont have any morbid interpretations of this one!!! It's just to me, a beautiful, haunting, love song. Being healed by that special someone. And I agree with JulieMarlene, she hasa gorgeous voice, in fact she's just gorgeous. I'm more than a little obsessed...

Queen Adreena – Hide From Time Lyrics 23 years ago
I actually used this song in a short drama piece for my A-levels. The interpretation I used worked very well.
The piece was a little abstract, and it was about a mother who lost her child, although the child was present in the piece...lol, I'm babbling, my drama isn't relevant.
The child was kidnapped and murdered, very sinisterly. The song told the story...
I sang the 1st verse at the beginning of the piece:

Inside her tower she feels free from harm,
I'll lock her up inside safe and warm,
She'll sleep for winter she'll sleep for years,
The garden's overgrown over her tears.

The twisted perverted view of the kidnapper. 'She feels safe and warm' - quite a few kidnappers/murderers of the demented variety believe the victim enjoys being in their company or that they have abducted them for their own good. 'I'll lock her up' - quite straightforward. 'She'll sleep for winter, she'll sleep for years' - planning to kill the child, again from a mentally unstable view. 'The garden's overgrown over her tears' - no-one will find her or hear her crying.

Verse two was sung at the end of the piece:

Grow the garden year after year,
The roots dug deep she won't be found down here,
Brambles thorns will keep the boys away hey hey,
She needs her sleep she won't play today.

The plants growing over where the child has been buried, decreasing the chances of her being discovered. The 'boys' possibly the police, seeing as they're sometimes known as 'the boys in blue'. 'She needs her sleep, she won't play today' - these lyrics are suddenly beginning to sound a lot more sinister and disturbing...

The third verse wasnt featured in my drama, but it can still be interpreted on the same theme very easily:

I'll keep her heart I'll keep it in one piece,
I'll be with her through years and years of sleep,
I'll make this moment last I'll beat time,
I'll be with her forever make her mine.

The murderer wants the child all to themself, they believe they can be together forever if the girl 'sleeps'. I'll leave it up to you whether or not to take the line 'I'll keep her heart, I'll keep it in one piece' literally or not. Perhaps the killer commits suicide after the murder 'I'll be with her through years and years of sleep', in order to be with their victim forever?

This song does have fairytale links, which is why it worked extremely well telling the story of a child's murder. It added a very disturbing ironic edge. I know this is a very morbid interpretation, but whether it's 'right' or not, for the purpose it was used this interpretation worked really really well

Queen Adreena – Cold Fish Lyrics 23 years ago
to me, personally, and I'm aware that this is a personal interpretation and not necessarily 'right' (if there is such a thing) I see this as a song about sex.

Cold fish
In my little dish

Seems to me like a metaphor (a really graphic and not entriely pleasant one) for sex. Cold fish - male, in my little dish - female. Use your imagination. And that brings the song onto a more perverse level. But I also think that this song is about masochism. The character in the song is actually enjoying the sex taken down to it's most crude, lude, perverse level. That's what they want. They want to be punished. It's about masochism.

'BREAK ME IN,
CASTIGATE (punish) me,
go on and MAKE ME'

There you go. I know too many people link things with sex these days, but that's just what the lyrics, sombined with the atmosphere of the song, say to me.

If you think about it it makes sense
