Death Cab for Cutie – Meet Me on the Equinox Lyrics 16 years ago
Within a given day, the sun is always at its highest peak in the middle of the day. So, from a different angle, the statement can be true.

It's also possible that the song could have additional meaning, beyond any connection to Twilight. Have you heard of Death Cab before? If not, do yourself a favor and a listen to their previous work...good stuff!

Hope you didn't lose sleep...

Matt Pond PA – East Coast E. Lyrics 17 years ago
Maybe Matt is using the car crash as a metaphor for a failed summer relationship? In that case, "extras get on the set" might refer to the characters looking for new lovers after the crash (end of their relationship with each other) as a way to move on.

Foo Fighters – The Pretender Lyrics 18 years ago
I'd agree that these lyrics are relatively vague. First few times through, I thought it was the protagonist struggling with their own identity, if you will. It sounded like Grohl was singing to himself in the mirror, telling himself that even though he pretends to be like the others around him, he is in fact different, and is itching to tell the world about it. The tempo of the song, the urgency of Dave's voice, they sounded more urgent/nervous (which would describe a person uncomfortable in his own skin), and I wouldn't have said outright angry (at the state of politics/Bush).

I read the song reviews here, many of which said they thought the song was a jab at U.S. politicians, namely Bush. Couldn't really say I agreed--after all, when have the Foo Fighters been overtly political? Then I saw the video...

An inordinate amount of riot police--who don't seem particularly fond of mainstream rock--appear from nowhere, line up opposite the band, and eventually charge at the defenseless Foo Fighters. Then, naturally, the set explodes and, like a giant fire hose, repels the riot police. Okay, then.

A logical interpretation is that the Foo Fighters' music is a protest against the U.S. government, and the riot police were sent to break up said protest. On the other hand, one could still take a more generalized approach and reason that the riot police in the video symbolize the protagonist's personal demons, which he finally rebels against and now will show his true colors to the world. Still, the political interpretation seems more straightforward, and also would account for the "I'm the left/I'm the right" verse. For my money, that's the winner.

I haven't read any interviews with Grohl or the band though. I'm not sure I trust the one previous reader who writes in all-caps broken english that Dave said the song was about politics in an interview.

Last thing: I think the line "Done bleeding ignorance at your defense" is actually "Done pleading ignorance, that old defense." Anyone else hearing that?

Elliott Smith – Son of Sam Lyrics 18 years ago
just some abstract ideas here, but maybe some will find them helpful...

i feel the last stanza is the most important. as mentioned earlier, shiva is the destroyer in hindu mythology- after all is destroyed, the slate is wiped clean, and we start fresh. doesn't this happen every night, after we dream? if "i may talk in my sleep tonight 'cause i don't know who i am," couldn't he be having a nightmare? shiva could be a metaphor; he wakes up in the morning and everything is new, unlike the awful dream...

so then, one option could be that all these things--telling his boss off, feeling lonely, etc--could be things that happened to him the day before the dream (he sleeps it off, "shiva" wipes him clean, and he wakes up new). a second option is that this was ALL in his dream, and then he wakes up new.

i haven't read any interviews or transcripts from elliot. this is just a thought after listening to the song several thousand times and reading all the posts above. like someone who posted previously, this was my first experience with elliot smith, and it remains my favorite of his songs

Duncan Sheik – Lost On The Moon Lyrics 18 years ago
I forgot to mention a couple things about the lyrics 2 missing verses and one pet peeve:

Before the first line listed here, "Here the world is desert gray," Sheik quietly speaks:
"Without you, lost on the moon,
Without you..."

Then, after the "a small parade" verse, he again quietly speaks:
"Will I ever be found?
Will I ever be, homeward bound?"

And in the chorus, the exclamation points could go. They look comical. :)

Duncan Sheik – Lost On The Moon Lyrics 18 years ago
I think the symbolism in this song is relatively straightforward. The protagonist is away from someone special; their absence leaves their world "desert gray" and he can "never see the day...there's only night." The line "to fall so fast and feel the burn" and his general croon throughout the chorus leads me to believe he's missing his lover.

The melody is relatively simple, and the haunting strings really do well to reinforce the feeling of being lost on the moon (or at least in some barren scape, devoid of feeling). Another beautiful song from Sheik, even if it's not groundbreaking. His songs are well-crafted, and I love his lyrics. This one's especially important to me though. :)

Modest Mouse – Dashboard Lyrics 19 years ago
so i just made the mistake of reading all 143 posts in the hopes of finding interesting ideas about the meaning of this song's lyrics, but apparently they've changed the site's name from "songmeanings" to "has modest mouse sold out? also, order their discography by how much you like each album. don't forget the snobbery!"

bands mature, and their sound changes, for better of worse. DEAL WITH IT, it's rather common. if you can't deal with it, feel free to complain, but do so on a forum ELSEWHERE that's dedicated to the topic. YOU are now degrading the quality of songmeanings by posting nonsense outside the scope of this site.

Third Eye Blind – Anything Lyrics 19 years ago
i think it's presumptuous to say that "this IS what the song means." for instance, monkeyranch, couldn't the song be about missing an ex or some significant person in your life, whom you know you can no longer see? the Jackie O reference would then serve to bolster the depth of the song by providing a common context to which we can all relate.

your interpretation could be right, but i'd be hesitant to think Steven Jenkins is THAT concerned about Jackie O specifically. their lyrics generally tend broader in scope...

Duncan Sheik – In the Absense of the Sun Lyrics 19 years ago
Beautiful song, and poignant since we've all been in this situation at some time or another. I don't mean to belabor the point; the lyrics are pretty straightforward, and there have already been plenty of comments to the point.

My only gripe is with the title: isn't it, "In the Absence of Sun"?

Matt Pond PA – Brooklyn Stars Lyrics 19 years ago
agent_apathy: i agree. i also think the main character (assumedly matt) was just looking for fun that night, but he seems to think the girl in bed might have wanted something more...though he's not interested. "don't hold your breath you shouldn't wait/there's no one here for you to save"

last, i think matt looks ahead- he knows that eventually he'll settle down into something that'll make him happy long-term (symbolized by spring, which he knows "will return again") and that's what leaves the song feeling positive in the wake of this dark time (tangibly, the awkward morning-after)

totally agree with you both. also, haven't we all hung out with that girl, as friends, though we're secretly wishing for something more? she's in the "passenger side" of your car, but still she's not yours- she's "just a little out of reach"

Matt Pond PA – KC Lyrics 19 years ago
this song sounds to me like a narrative. the author is reminiscing about a lost relationship where it sounds like he was hurt. perhaps he walks through the city and remembers pieces of old memories. "the bodies underneath the maple tree/the leaves turned red where you killed me" fall has always been a symbol of death- of the leaves which turn red and fall from the tree, but in this case of the relationship which died.

i just can't get this song out of my head. i walk around all day air-guitarring. the chords are simple but beautiful
