Brooklyn Stars Lyrics

in complete darkness
i lose balance
i'm getting dressed you're still asleep
think you're a fake
at not being awake
i reach the door your breath has changed
i do not stop
turn all the locks
don't hold your breath you shouldn't wait

the birds and cars
speak up when they reach morning
i know some day
the spring will return again

i'm returning to
a small green room
at 5:15 the sky has changed
from black to blue
still hardly day
these brooklyn stars are small and strange
i'm under roads
they're going home
next to statues of saints of snow

perfect plans cannot be made
i hate fights about merging on to interstates
i think people should realize
there are other lanes
not just theirs for only them
to get them home again
to go home again

in complete darkness
i lose balance
i'm getting dressed you're still asleep
don't hold your breath you shouldn't wait
there's no one there for you to save

i know some day
the spring will return again
the birds and cars
speak up when they reach morning
i'm not gone yet
i want more of everything

a wonderfully personal song, a definite highlight of their new album.

i love this song, its so warm and makes you think of leaving a loved one in the morning for work or school and just wanting to crawl back in bed with them

it seemed obvious to me at first, but perhaps i'm just reading what i want it to be into it:

he's leaving her house early in the morning, trying to avoid awkwardness, while she's pretending to be asleep for the same reason. i'm not sure about every line, but the rest of the song seems to be about people being self-centered and becomming oblivious to the pleasantries of everyday life in the pursuit of whatever it is they want (ie. to get home)

agent_apathy: i agree. i also think the main character (assumedly matt) was just looking for fun that night, but he seems to think the girl in bed might have wanted something more...though he's not interested. "don't hold your breath you shouldn't wait/there's no one here for you to save"

last, i think matt looks ahead- he knows that eventually he'll settle down into something that'll make him happy long-term (symbolized by spring, which he knows "will return again") and that's what leaves the song feeling positive in the wake of this dark time (tangibly, the awkward morning-after)

i think you guys are right, but maybe at the end of the song he realizes that he does actually want to be with her... "i'm not gone yet i want more of everything" maybe the girl was helping him get over a tough time, and they got together and he thinks he wants to leave, that she can't save him from whatever it is, but as he leaves he feels strange and realizes that he wants more?

Apparently KC is Matt Pond ex wife. From other songs I get the impression that they had a fight and falling out in Montreal. In the lyrics of “History of Canada. “In the history of Canada there never was a mention of how we fought out on the sidewalk of the Drake Hotel” However he goes on to say “I’ve got got this power of revision, you knew me well” So this may not be absolutely what happened. By the way, if you haven’t figured it out, Lily is his daughter.
