Britney Spears – 3 Lyrics 16 years ago
I don't expect people who listen to Britney Spears to be especially pop-culture-literate, but COME THE FUCK ON, PEOPLE.

Stop speculating as to why whoever wrote this song used the names Peter, Paul, and Mary. They were a folk group in the sixties. The writer of this song simply used it because it is a well-known combination of THREE names.

M. Ward – Epistemology Lyrics 16 years ago
This song perfectly encapsulates how it feels when you're falling in love. It starts to happen just when you've given up trying. "And beyond that is anybody's guess."

Simon and Garfunkel – America Lyrics 17 years ago
This song explains why I'm leaving home to become a stewardess.

The Kinks – Strangers Lyrics 18 years ago
I know this has nothing to do with the song's "meaning," but I've thought for years that this song sounds like it belongs in a Wes Anderson film and now it's in Darjeeling. I feel psychic.

Rufus Wainwright – Across the Universe (The Beatles cover) Lyrics 18 years ago
as a huuuuge Beatles fan, it pains me to say this, but I honestly think he did it better.

His voice has this way of really bringing out the beauty in songs that were already great on their own.

Sufjan Stevens – The Predatory Wasp of the Palisades Is Out to Get Us! Lyrics 18 years ago
I find it kind of odd that no one debating this song's meaning ("Gay song?" "Religious song?") has really acknowledged several people saying they HEARD Sufjan explain the story behind this song.

When I saw him in March, he simply introduced it as being a song about his fear of wasps, but that certainly ties into the summer-camp-best-friend explanation.

Also, take this how you will, but I the venue at which I saw Sufjan was a pretty conservative Christian College and while this has nothing to do with my own decidedly opposing personal beliefs, this school probably would have performed a pretty rigorous selection process and was billing it as a Christian concert. I think that if they had found even a whiff of gay themes surrounding his music, they wouldn't have asked him to play.

In short: it is my personal opinion that Sufjan probably isn't gay.

Sufjan Stevens – Casimir Pulaski Day Lyrics 18 years ago
I'm pretty sure "stone" is correct
"Doll" does not rhyme with "bone."

The Shins – Australia Lyrics 18 years ago
I could have sworn I read an interview in which Mercer said this song was written about working at a worthless job under an asshole boss.

Ben Folds – Learn To Live With What You Are Lyrics 18 years ago
I've always seen
"There's never gonna be a moment of truth for you, while the world is watching..."
as gentle advice to the listener that the world is not a TV show, where your problems are resolved in 22 minutes and suddenly everything becomes clear. You have to figure it all out on your own.

I couldn't even pick a favorite line from this song. The whole thing is just so residual. I love it.

OK Go – A Million Ways Lyrics 19 years ago
My friends dressed up in suits and recreated this music video step for step.
It was pretty much the sweetest thing I've seen in my life.

Straylight Run – Your Name Here (Sunrise Highway) Lyrics 20 years ago
It's not about a fight; John Nolan has said several times that this is a B-Side to "There's No I In Team" - John realizes that petty fights aren't worth losing a friend like Jesse and now they are back to loving each other in a completely platonic way.

Straylight Run – Mistakes We Knew We Were Making Lyrics 20 years ago
I don't see it as being about Taking Back Sunday or a relationship... I see it as being nostalgic about a period of time in your life, but optimistic about the future, knowing "you can't go home again," but "we'll move forward and know where we went wrong" ... you learn from your mistakes and keep moving on. It's good to have your silly little mistakes in the past, but regretting it is just a waste of time. I don't really see any context clues as to this being about a girl or former band members.. just nostalgia and the acquired wisdom over time.

Rent – Out Tonight (Mimi's Apartment) Lyrics 20 years ago
I always loved this song, but Daphne Rubin-Vega's voice just doesn't do aaaaaanything for me. Hearing Rosario sing this is just terrific; she looked great in the movie, too.

Ben Kweller – In Other Words Lyrics 20 years ago
Yeah, it's a pretty song and all and I love Ben Kweller, but I find it hilarious that people are trying to argue the chorus has amazing lyrics... it sounds wonderful, but
"Butterflies are passive/agressive and put their problems on the shelf, but they're beautiful"
can't stand on its own as a good lyric.
Calling anyone who thinks that it's not a good lyric ignorant is not only stupid... but ignorant in its own right. Saying you don't like it is simply opinion.

Ben Kweller – Family Tree Lyrics 20 years ago
It reminds me of being grounded in your relationship with someone... just like a healthy relationship with a family grounds you. No matter what happens, you can keep your roots in this one special person.

It don't really matter.
But if your head is up you won't get much sadder.

But who am I to preach a word or two
when I can't even lift my own head without you?

BK is such a sweetie. I love him.
