Pancho's Lament – Promise Me This Lyrics 20 years ago
I see this as a song about how hard it is to let someone in, to fall in love. How he needs her to promise him she will never take him for granted, she will always be there for him. He specifically asks her not to run away, even though they both can…
I really love it in that connection – “promise me this – you will never understand me”. You won’t imagine how many times I couldn’t find the words to say just that.

Lifehouse – You And Me Lyrics 20 years ago
I have two theories about this one, and neither of them are kind, so please, excuse me in advance.
Jason wade is supposed to have been in a relationship for a while, am I right? So if this love song is based on personal lyrics, it’s not about her. It’s about another girl he has a crush on. This is way too infatuated to be about someone you’ve been with for years.
Other option is that he was notified that he has to write another hit single, like “hanging by a moment” before the ship sinks (after Stanley climbfall…?). I mean, he’s a terrific song writer, but sometimes he can be such a lyrics whore.
Great song. Really. They’ve done much better.

M2M – Don't Mess With My Love Lyrics 20 years ago
Ah, the Jennifer trilogy (“don’t mess with my love”, “do you know what you want” and “Jennifer”) – here’s my theory –
Boy meets girl. Let’s call boy Jason, and girl Marion, just to make it easy. Jason and Marion like each other, and start to date. They start hanging with the same people. At which point, Marion does the stupidest thing, and introduces Jason to her hot friend – Jennifer. A big no-no.
Jennifer is kind of a flirt, and a drama-queen. She’s not evil, she’s just… girlish. She wants Marion to be happy, so she becomes friends with Marion’s new love – Jason. At some point Jennifer starts feeling things towards Jason. She is torn apart in her little drama, between her friend Marion, and her heart which belongs to Jason.
Now, at this point, she does the smart this and hits on Jason, going all “do you know what you want, ooh, you look so confused” on the boy.
Jason, terrified and confused, goes to Marion and tells her that something odd has been going on with Jennifer. He does not want to tell her Jennifer hit on him, because that would be coming between their friendship, and Jason loves Marion, he does not want to hurt her. Marion, sensitive and jealous to begin with, catches up to how stupid she was to introduce the two in the first place, and goes all “stop talking about Jennifer!! All the time, it’s “Jennifer this and Jennifer that”.
Now Jason breaks down. He tells her all about the “do you know what you want” episode, and begs her to leave it alone, tells her he loves only her.
But that’s really not good enough to take Marion’s mind off her backstabbing friend. So she goes to Jennifer and starts with the “don’t mess with my love, slut!”

It’s like a bloody musical.

Counting Crows – High Life Lyrics 20 years ago
I agree with both the first and second comments – it’s about how everything changes, everybody moves on, and only he is stuck. And he knows, if he just finds that one person, that’s waiting there for someone like him, it’ll save him.
I think the “so unkind” is not as dramatic as cheating or an actual thing that makes them evil, but more the general reflection of themselves, as older, less naïve people.

This is my favorite crows song, and until reading the comments, it hadn’t even crossed my mind that it is so untypical for the crows, but now I see what you guys mean – it’s really a different kind of song. Duritz is one of the best lyricists there are out there.

Matt Nathanson – Measure For Measure Lyrics 20 years ago
Now here’s a guess, I’d like people to comment if they agree with it or not –
I don’t think he’s talking about a particular woman, even though he probably wrote this after a particular incident –
I think “beautiful sun” refers to all the beauties of the west coast.

Matt Nathanson – Curve Of The Earth Lyrics 20 years ago
I completely agree. My favorite MN song. His true lyric abilities are revealed in this song.
“you’re vicious like the blue sky, right before the rain comes pouring through”. That’s just plain ingenious.

Matt Nathanson – Vandalized Lyrics 20 years ago
I think that by “vandalized”, he means how his love or care for someone, he is forced to be haunted with thoughts about that person, even though it seems that person is not retrieving that level of thoughtfulness. Probably someone that was very close to him in the past, and is no longer so. Half of the criticism built towards that person has really nothing to do with them, but more to do with the anger and hurt.
I really love how MN can express anger only through words, how you don’t even need to listen to know he’s pissed off. He’s one of those people, who use words, the way they were intended to be used.

Matt Nathanson – Little Victories Lyrics 20 years ago
I find this song to be the grown up, insightful version of John Mayer’s “new deep”. Obviously, this was written before new deep, and is, frankly, better in many ways other than the ones mentioned above (insightful, grown up). It’s just a conscious decision a sensitive person makes to let it go, stop taking it to heart, being yourself. This is not my favorite MN song, to say the least, but I can see what’s so good about it.
I like how he doesn’t take a aggressive approach to this idea, of leaving life be, but rather a calm, post-cathartic one. Sort of like “I’ve been here before, but now I understand”.

Matt Nathanson – Church Clothes Lyrics 20 years ago
The thing with MN is that he has a few songs that talk about how difficult it was for him to deal with fame, or at least – the hypocrisy of the music business, or so I think.
The question is if he was ever VERY famous, as in, gone-to-my-head-can’t-deal-with-it-famous? Or is he just very sensitive to this?
I mean, he’s stardom material, that’s for sure, but he still keeps his shows intimate, and his songs on a small scale, just wondering why.
This song, I think, has a lot to do with it, how he can’t handle the inconvenience of being in the spot light, even though he thought he was born for that.

Howie Day – Sunday Morning Song Lyrics 20 years ago
I think this song might be about a pregnancy scare. He’s comparing it to a car crash in some way, and that is interesting, as if just the scare tore them apart. It’s like “I know nothing really happened, so why do I feel so crappy?”

Howie Day – She Says Lyrics 20 years ago
In short, because so many people have speculated – I think this song is written to himself. He has a friend that he is in love with, and he’s trying to remind himself that she doesn’t love him the way she wants. If you’ve seen the new video, you’ll probably see why I was lead to think this.

Howie Day – Madrigals Lyrics 20 years ago
I also get an idolization feeling from many of his songs, only problem is – like a smart guy once told me – idolization is usually something women do, not men.
So, of course, that doesn’t mean men CAN’T idolize, it just means it more of a surprise.
But I agree that again it seems like he’s talking about someone he barely knows, yet has an intense feeling towards.
Howie Day brings me to think a lot about the fan-artist-fan relationship, and now that I see other people feel the same, it just strengthens my theories.

Howie Day – Everything Else Lyrics 20 years ago
Out guess (husband and myself) was that Howie Day tends to write many songs to himself – we are pretty sure that “She Says” was written to himself, as was this.

The only debate we have is if he actually HAS the girl or not – I say not (“if you want her you can’t have her”) he says he does (“think about her now, she’s yours anyways”). I say it’s all in his head, that he has never even talked to her, he just wants her.
Now, the “demons” part is a bit over-dramatic in my view – the point he is trying to make is that he is aware of how far he is from reality, but can’t care about that now.

What do you think?
