| The Kinks – Hot Potatoes Lyrics | 12 years ago |
I think this song is about the Beatles, specifically about George Harrison. With Harrison's "My sweet lord" in mind... It think both songs are beautiful, but I prefer "Hot potatoes" actually, but I don't idolize the Beatles. I know many think Ray Davies is an egotiscial maniac, but I have the exact opposite impression of him. Ray is very honest about his faults, and he even makes much fun of it. I'd like to see someone like George Harrison making fun of his eccentric and delusional "spiritual" self, even at the expense of loosing fans. |

| The Kinks – David Watts Lyrics | 12 years ago |
1. Daivd is greatly admired (wanting to be like/with) by his fellow schoolmates, but naturally and ironically this success itself seperates him even more. 2. While Ray is mocking this "I wish I could be like" admiration, he is actually jealous. 3. David is actually gay, so much of this admiration from others is strictly superficial. |

| The Kinks – You Can't Stop the Music Lyrics | 12 years ago |
The "Starmaker" became Norman, and his spirit faded away. But ironically in doing so he successfully made Norman a star, by the trip of coming to reality. As, if Norman really was delusional it was enhanced by his ordinary life, or if the Starmaker was real and became delusional it was enhanced by Norman's ordinary life. And all that was left for this story was plain ordinary Norman. Now, the spirit of the Starmaker still lives on and will come and go as a part of some others' grand delusion or illusion. |

| The Kinks – A Face In The Crowd Lyrics | 12 years ago |
The starmaker is no longer sure who he is anymore... Is he the magical Starmaker that has done his research so well, that he no longer can seperate with his persona? Is he Norman, an ordinary man so sick and tired of his ordinary life, that he has invented this Starmaker persona? It seems it doesn't matter much to him anymore. An arrogance that high, in any case, it was bound to drop with the reality of Norman's life. http://www.songmeanings.net/songs/view/3530822107859019836/ |

The Starmaker has had too much to drink, he is still romanticizing, but he feels he has not so much control over it. Not a good sign... http://www.songmeanings.net/songs/view/3530822107858878937/ |

| The Kinks – Have Another Drink Lyrics | 12 years ago |
The Starmaker continues to romanticize Norman's life, but maybe he is getting a little too fond of the stress-reliever alcohol? http://www.songmeanings.net/songs/view/3530822107859019835/ |

The Starmaker is challenging fate... He stumbles over the ordinary Norman, and meets with Norman's wife Andrea to take his place for research to make Norman a star. | The Kinks – Black Messiah Lyrics | 12 years ago |
Everybody got the right to speak their mind So don't shoot me for saying mine (self-explaining) Everybody talking about racial equality Cause everybody's equal in the good Lord's eyes (speaking of our highest ideals) But if I told you that God was black What would you think of that I bet you wouldn't believe it (we don't really believe in our highest ideals) There's a self made prophet living right next to me He said the Black Messiah's gonna come and set the whole world free He looked at me with his evil eye and prophesied And he really believed it (self-explaining) He said a Black Messiah is gonna set the world on fire And he's no liar, 'cause he has truly heard the word (mocking this prophet persona) Everybody talking about racial equality But I'm the only honky living on an all black street They knock me down 'cause they brown and I white (mocking the primitive thoughts of these racist personas, showing they want "equality" but they don't care to give it to others solely because of their own racism) Everybody got the right to speak their mind So don't shoot me for saying mine Everybody talking about racial equality You hear everybody talking about equal rights But white's white, black's black and that's that And that's the way you should leave it (NOT: Whites are white, blacks are black. BUT: [Color] white is [Color] white, just as black, and that's all there is to it - it's just a color, visual appearance of a minor physical attribute that plays a small part in the big process of what makes a person a person) Don't want no Black Messiah to come and set the world on fire (Ray Davies doesn't want a radical violent change escalated by a "messiah", even though some have been, and are oppressed) A Black Messiah is gonna come and rule the world (Retro to prophet) Everybody got to show a little give and take Everybody got to live with a little less hate Everybody gotta work it out, we gotta sort it out (Ray Davies solution to the racial "issue", or maybe our social "issues" in general) Everybody got the right to speak their mind So don't shoot me for saying mine Basically it is a satire like many of his songs, it is about "showing the other cheek", not "eye for an eye for an eye for an...), very Tolstoian. Not surprising, they have (or had) some similar "political" beliefs. |

| The Kinks – Mindless Child Of Motherhood Lyrics | 12 years ago |
It's about Dave's lost childhood lover. Both their parents kept them away from eachother when she got pregnant. Now, they are grown up, but she is hiding herself and their son away from him, he does not know why. Why he was a fool - might be he's playboy attitude, might be his foolish heart when young, only he knows. |
| The Kinks – Lola Lyrics | 13 years ago |
Lola may or may not be a transvestite, but that's trivial.. The song is about an insecure but small minded man that gets lost in the passionate moment, because of this open minded and secure Lola. |
