I found a new interpretation for the line "And it's hard to be a human being/And it's harder as anything else." In the past, it seemed to me that by "as," Isaac really meant "than;" however, I feel that he may have meant to say "as." Perhaps he's saying that life as a human is hard (going through rites such as proms), but life as anything else is harder (animals have to constantly forage for food while in danger from higher creatures, other organisms don't have the mental capabilities of humans and may not understand much, plants are immobile and endangered et cetera). We humans seem to relish inconveniences and things to complain about; in reality, as advanced organisms, we have it better than anything else. Noteworthy: In the MM song "Leaflets Gabe," Isaac states, "Life is better as an animal." |

| Weird Al Yankovic – Canadian Idiot Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| Haha...I just realized that my earlier post wasn't necessary (Z would be pronounced "zed"), but maybe it will clarify the lyrics for some people. | |
| Weird Al Yankovic – Canadian Idiot Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| I think the fourth line in the first stanza is "I never learned my alphabet from A to Zed." This makes sense because "head" and "zed" rhyme and the letter Z is pronounced "zed" in English-speaking countries other than the U.S. | |

| Recovering Pain: This song is also listed as Life Of Arctic Sounds. | |
| Modest Mouse – Sunspots Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| This is track 1 on The Fruit That Ate Itself. I like the reversed clips such as this one that are featured throughout the album. | |
| Modest Mouse – Tiny Cities Made of Ashes Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| I think that the line "I'm gonna get dressed up in plastic gonna shake hands with the masses" refers to being fake and changing yourself to become more appealing to others (dressing up in plastic). The fake person then becomes generally popular with society (shaking hands with the masses). Like "Head South," I think that this song is about selling your soul to gain fame and fortune. | |
| Modest Mouse – Classy Plastic Lumber Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| The last line is actually "I must've thoroughly failed to convince us not to mess this place up." | |
| Modest Mouse – Wood Grain Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| This song sounds a lot like the beginning of Lounge (on Long Drive). | |
| Modest Mouse – Call to Dial a Song Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| This song (featured on Sad Sappy Sucker) is a message left on Isaac Brock's answering machine by Spencer Moody in 1994. | |

| Personally, I think the first two lines are a great part of the song, and definitely belong in it. It's ultra-zany (typical Modest Mouse :)) and it helps transition from She Ionizes and Atomizes into the rest of Head South. Just my opinion though....My friend and I sung (loudly) the first two lines at a high school football game once. It was funny when we hit the high G-note on "plen-TY" and "pine TREES". We got a few strange looks...but it was great. | |

Also, You're The Good Things (Everywhere EP version) contains lines used in other songs on Good News. For example: "Sleight of hand" - used in Float On "And help's not short when you're diggin' your grave I'll help you dig it So you're diggin' your grave now you're speakin' my language I'll help you dig it" - Dig Your Grave |

The line "Well all that icing and all that cake, I can't make it to your wedding but I'm sure I'll be at your wake" reminds me of a line from another Modest Mouse song, You're The Good Things. "You're the icing on the cake on the table at my wake" I'm positive that the line in Bukowski was based off of You're The Good Things. As for what these lines mean? Well, I'm still working on it. I hope to make some progress soon. |

The lyrics posted here are incorrect. I believe the correct lyrics are as follows: A surf rock band from the land of plenty Surf rock bands with no surf, just pine trees Start by being ashamed of your old space Just wanting that mean heat You bleached your hair and you pawned your skis And then you sold out for the shade of the palm tree scene And said, "Oh what a drag! Oh what a backwards scheme!" Cuz here things go from grey to grey and back to grey again And they get green and go to grey and go back to grey again So he said, "Head south!" [x16] Struck by being ashamed of your old space Just wanting that mean heat You bleached your hair and you pawned your skis And then you sold out for the shade of the palm tree scene Sit around in cut-off jeans and cut-off jeans are What you mean when you say, "Head south!" [x12] I'm not sure about a few parts.......in the third line, the word "start" might be "stuck" or "struck", and the word "shade"(first section, sixth line/second section, fourth line) might be "shape" or "shake". Other than that, I think it's all correct. |

By the way, I think this is a great song, and it fits in perfectly with the rest of the"...Long Drive..." album (which I'm still trying to figure out). I think this song is about the narrator's (Isaac Brock is not necessarily speaking as himself, though I get the feeling that he is) struggle with trying to understand the world and himself as well. He can have an opinion at one point, but later on he'll have the opposite opinion. Basically, he's trying to figure out what he should do with his life. | John Denver – Take Me Home, Country Roads Lyrics | 20 years ago |
|
Okay..... In my opinion, this is simply a good old-fashioned love song to the countryside in general and to the Appalachian Mountains in West Virginia in particular. Although it does mention a "miner's lady", I think this is more about the land and not about a woman. I think John Denver was a master at writing great country/folk songs that are straight to the point, and this song is just another fine example. *Note: I DID write this comment. |

| Hmmm...Is this song on any CD? I don't know about this one.....sounds too repetitive. | |
| Modest Mouse – Four Leaf Clover Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| I think the lyrics are great (possibly referring to having imperfections that are clearly seen because of opening one's self up through talking, etc.) but I want to hear the music to get a full taste of it before I establish a firm opinion. | |

| Ummm.....does anyone know if this song is on one of Modest Mouse's EPs, or what? | |
