| The Tragically Hip – Scared Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
I think it has something to do with propaganda. The fact that it's a salesman who is doing his earnest best to pitch fear is my first clue. The middle, about people that are "suspicious or hostile" is saying that it's not actually necessary to attack other peoples as we are told, it's entirely possible for them and us to both grow old and die without being afraid of eachother. Propaganda is about spreading emotion, overwhelming rational thought. That's why as the song goes on less and less people are able to see that at the heart of it is "cold calculation" aaanyway, it doesn't fit perfectly but it seems like a start. |

| Brand New – Limousine Lyrics | 18 years ago |

Hey, the last part (that ends in "I should be laughing right now") seems to relate to the married couple, or at least SOME kind of couple. At first I figured it was the mother talking about how she wouldn't need to buy a family plot in the cemetary, but then what WOULD she do with the body? I know it doesn't fit with the rest of the definition, where I'm in the dark, but those lines, talking about adjacent plots and not having to "lose my baby in the crowd" (which I would guess is a divorce, when they don't see eachother again) Maybe because of the accident the wedding was called off? Maybe she left him in grief after the flower girl died (a flower girl at her wedding would be related to her in some important way, after all) |

| Okkervil River – So Come Back, I Am Waiting Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| Yeah, Tim Hardin was the inspiration and the catalyst for most of the album, but the Black Sheep Boy concept also seems to mean simply the dark side of one's self, the selfish and proud and powerful side that it's considered "weak" to indulge in. This, of course, also relates to the heroin but it doesn't seem to be entirely boxed in by the drug. | |
| Okkervil River – For The Captain Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| Is it just me, or does it seem that this has a lot of angelic imagery, and the rewrite seems to be for demons? The second verses in either one seem to be kind of religiously inclined, but to opposite ends of the spectrum. | |
| Broken Social Scene – Market Fresh Lyrics | 20 years ago |

I always thought it was "scarlet stains, amber leaves" Although the Emily dealy probably makes more sense. I can't seem to find anything else to compare it with though |

I considered puttin' up Ratatat's whole CD and just goin' "Bwa na na na na na na Dada na na na na na na Wah wah wah wah Beedly boo" I mean, there ain't no lyrics, there ain't no meanin', it's just fun! |

| Matthew Good Band – Haven't Slept In Years Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| You sure about that, man? Seems kind of specific to only make one verse outta. | |
| Matthew Good Band – Middle Class Gangsters Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| Yeah, Shimmerchick's pretty right. But I don't think it's actually about him making fun of them as much as he's talking about being tough. The whole song is cocky, and he's blasting people that apply their ego with money. | |
| Okkervil River – Seas Too Far to Reach Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| It's both. It's a man comforting his grieving lady, and getting poetic about sex. It's also in chronological order, it looks like. I hadn't noticed that before. | |
| Okkervil River – For Real Lyrics | 20 years ago |
|
I think it's not about just the search for truth in general, but for honesty in a relationship. It seems the girl is superficial and shallow despite his attempts to make it into a real relationship. Anyway, it seems to work with the majority of the lyrics, but I'm nowhere near 100% sure. |

| Matthew Good – Near Fantastica Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| Really? I'd say it's about how little we realize the crappy stuff that's going on around us. The daily grind that keeps the economy going and how everybody's rationalizing that things aren't so terribly bad, because there's nothing else that we can do about it. | |
| Matthew Good – Bright End Of Nowhere Lyrics | 20 years ago |
|
I think this song's about being burnt out after getting famous. It sounds like a before and after, maybe, where he's talking about the old days in the first verse and what it's like now in the second. The song sounds like a confession, reminiscing with an old friend. That's probably what the chorus is about, also. |

| Matthew Good – Avalanche Lyrics | 20 years ago |
|
I agree with Eterna but I think that the Avalanche is more about strength, sort of. Like he's finally decided to do something and it makes him feel alive. I just like that this song is sort of gentle mostly but at the same time so very angry. Any guesses on what that "this key's to your kingdom" bit is about? It's kind of stumped me. |

| The Decemberists – The Engine Driver Lyrics | 20 years ago |

I'm with five to one. I think it's just one guy, who is a writer. He's got unrequited love for this lady and he copes with writing all kinds of love stories about different lives where it might have worked out. Or something. That's what I can figure. |
