Haven't Slept In Years Lyrics
Make me your animal
make me your freak and i will pack them in
it's understandable
after all you're only human
all this time it's been killing me
all this time it's been caving in my head
killing me
alive, alive, alive
you're dead
Haven't slept in years
haven't talked to anybody else
Make me your cannibal
make me your product and i will make you rich
it's still fashionable, isn't it?
all this time it's been killing you
all this time it's been caving in your head
killing you
alive, alive, alive
you're dead
make me your freak and i will pack them in
it's understandable
after all you're only human
all this time it's been killing me
all this time it's been caving in my head
killing me
alive, alive, alive
you're dead
haven't talked to anybody else
make me your product and i will make you rich
it's still fashionable, isn't it?
all this time it's been killing you
all this time it's been caving in your head
killing you
alive, alive, alive
you're dead

no comments? what the nilly. allof matthew good [band] songs are amazing. i saw him on Monday and it was 'wow'
It's about John Merrick (the "Elephant Man"). Well, the first verse at least. Someone else can figure out the second one.
You sure about that, man? Seems kind of specific to only make one verse outta.
It sounds like it's just about isolation judging by the chorus.
No. It's ALL about John Merrick. I don't have the source because i read it awhile ago, but Matt Good said it pretty directly. All the themes within it are just naturally linked to the guy's story.
It really is inspired by John Merrick. I read the same thing. It's about how he wasn't even HUMAN to people. He was just a side-show freak. Something to be pointed at and laughed at, and then forgotten. Not as a person, but as a thing. People used him to boost sales, to make money, to start conversation. Forget that he had emotions. Forget that he had hope and expectations.
The chorus is basically about his isolation. No one ever cared enough to get down on a personal level with him. "Haven't slept in years, haven't talked to anybody else."
But Merrick was just the inspiration. This song is a tribute to people who have been mistreated and made to feel like they were less than everyone else. It was very generous of Matt to write it, when you think about it.
I'm not usually one to resurrect 10 year old threads.. but I recorded one of MGB's shows in 1998 - and Matt said (direct quote): "This is a song by John Merrick - better known as the Elephant Man; This is called Haven't Slept In Years"
