| The Clash – White Riot Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| Yup Baller, their live gigs were AMAZING... my friend's dad was a huge fan and he tells me stories about what happened when he went to see them... unfortunately i can't post him over to the states, his family kinda needs him, but i can recommend Rude Boy (a Clash movie) to you... the film's worth is dubious, but there's an option so that you can just watch their live performances... i think there's about 28 songs performed. Only problem is whether you can get it in the USA. you sound like a serious fan, so doubtless you'll look into this... | |

| bit late now, but joeytheboy, you are right, all white music was up its arse and punk made something exciting happen (and was influenced by black music of the time)...there's loads of teenagers out there who are all on about how punk is a way of life and yadayadayada, and although the Sex Pistols may have been all about the shocking people, which is what most of these teenage scenesters are talking about (actually, make what the scenesters are on about conformity, which is just like school "crushing individuality", which is moving backwards ;) ), The Clash really had something to say... this song is commenting on the differences between white and black people's, at the times, causes... black people had something to fight for, live for, and maybe the white kids didn't... but also, like London's Burning, it's about the boredom of the era, how youth needed change, musical rebellion. Punk was about moving forwards, not moving backwards, doing what you thought was right. It was idealistic, and perhaps the band's cause, what they came to live for, was the music. My dad had fond memories of this song, then he listened to it and thought it was crude, since they hadn't mastered their instruments/vocal chords yet... it IS crude, but that doesn't mean it isn't ace. | |

| Horrorpops – Julia Lyrics | 20 years ago |

i never saw it that way before Jimmy Gordon, that's a good insight... it could also be about terminal illness, and the line "She's sicker than hell, but always feeling fine" reminds me of my friend who suffers from depression but often won't admit to this or open herself to anyone... sometimes she says she feels "sick" when she feels depressed. The more i think about it, the more your meaning makes sense "My friend Julia, she hasn't got a clue But Julia always stay true"... anyhoo, i like the way (if that is the case) that it challenges conventional ideas about beauty, and i love the part close to the end "Every thing is gonna be fine/You're gonna be all right"...so reassuring, yet the whole song is a little bit unsettingly spooky. |

| p.s. "we will be together in our lust" realises this is animal... more honest than most lovesongs. NEVER LET THEM TAKE YOUR BRAINS! | |

| uh-huh hellcats (e.g. all of you guys!) NO. PATRICA IS MINE! i love the fact that this band realises the conformity of the punk/psychobilly scene, although this song seems to be about her accepting this by getting together with Nekroman, and then it seems she becomes a zombie figure, buuut... "we're not gonna give in, we're not gonna concede" it's like a vow to be original and non-conformist, maybe even a love-vow. Probably read into these completely the wrong way. Oh well... this is like the theme-tune of my life. | |

| oh yeah, forgot, if you like the political side of American Idiot/are into punk you should really check out The Clash. They were ground-breaking, thoughtful, and basically the most eloquent and probably the best of all the British punk band of the 1970s 1st wave. Plus they are a major influence for this band. | |

| p.s. i wonder what method of torture extracted the "Ah-Ah" sound from Billie Joe's mouth. Any ideas? | |

| "the whiney fuck" indeed, kailkay, the whiney fuck indeed. time for a bitch-rant. i don't think it's a sell-out song or whatever, who cares if a song is popular, sometimes that might just be because it's good, but...i know this may make you question what life is about, etc., but bloody hell, how many songs have you heard in your life which sound exactly the same/mean exactly the same as this. It's really repetitive, without the oomph of Holiday to carry it off. So many of their other songs, whether you like them or not, actually have some original ideas and meanings instead of "i'm depressed, life's a bitch, i screwed up, won't somebody love me, oh why won't you love me, fuck you anyway i don't need you to love me i'll just kill myself." just a vehicle for stereotypical conformist teenagers to wallow in their pain like i did a year ago. also, he's not a-bloody-lone. you'd think the mopey bastard would be happy (in fact, with their legions of new fans im sure the band is very very happy) so they must have written this for sellability (not a word) rather than actual feelings. my mum counts me as "a goth" cos i have a cynical world view and listen to fairly dark/mopey music, but there's only so much self-pity someone can take. Eurrgh. Grow up, Billie. love from a 14 year old. ok, ok, all for listening to it in the context of the album, but on its own (ha ha) this song is one of the blandest, most identikit ones ive ever heard. can someone please beat the crap out of this view? cheers. | |
