Linkin Park – Shadow Of The Day Lyrics 18 years ago
Could it be that those who have contemplated suicide tend to see the meaning of suicide in this?

to vandalrocker:
It is possible that there are 2 perspectives there if you read it that way. But seems like the writer is talking to a second person. e.g. "I AM having this opinion, what do YOU think?"

In particular, I think the writer is talking to a person who is faced with a choice to stay or leave the group. (This may be his friend or whoever listens to the song.)
-"Your friends plead".
The catch is, staying would require hard work or conflict. -"Sometimes solutions aren't so simple.
Sometimes goodbye's the only way."
When you leave one place/group, you meet with another, and start again.
-"Sometimes beginnings aren't so simple."
And for the person leaving. The sun will set on him/her. That is, the time he/she has with the group is over.

This song relates to a situation my friend was in. He belonged to this organization, and everyone loved him. but because he had great conflict with the boss, he had to leave, or stay and submit to the stubborn boss's unreasonable terms. No one else in the organization was happy with this of course. It all became grey thereafter.

This song could apply to groups of friends splitting and breaking up, perhaps because of certain alliances, and loyalties. When 2 friends in a group become enemies, its easy to take sides. Though this song seems to apply to a single person leaving.

Daniel Powter – Love You Lately Lyrics 18 years ago
Babylon is the ancient city known for its wealth and luxury. Famous for "The Hanging Gardens" which were one of the seven wonders of the ancient world.

According to the Bible, Babylon was built by Nimrod, and was also this city that started many false religions of the world. It became such an advancement of human achievement that it became devoid of God.

How all this fits with the song... I don't really know. Its so bizarre how he uses it. I'd have to do logic gymnastics to make it fit.... e.g.

When they're alone together, they become like a wonder of the world, successful, wealthy in spirit. Or perhaps a return to the peak/achievement of their relationship, as opposed to getting progressively distant and worse.

(.... but that's just my wild guess.)

I agree with napasah. That line blew me away:
"cause there's a thousand lights that will make you feel brand new but if you ever lose your way, i'll leave one on for you...."
So simple and brilliant! Brilliance seems to often say the most in the least.

Within Temptation – Somewhere Lyrics 18 years ago
Another way to interpret "Almost hope you're in heaven so no one can hurt your soul" is:
I hope you're dead and in heaven so that no one can physically hurt you. The word soul can be used physically, e.g. SOS Save Our Souls.

Lines like:
[1-Need to know where you are
But one thing is for sure
You’re always in my heart
2-Wherever you are, I won’t stop searching
Whatever it takes, I need to know]
Suggest to me that a loved one is missing, and it's worrying the author to death.
"Living in agony cause I just do not know
Where you are"
"The truth will free my soul"
the author just wants to at least know that the loved one is safe, and unharmed, even if he/she is dead and in heaven so that no harm could possibly come.

30 Seconds to Mars – From Yesterday Lyrics 18 years ago
That was an articulate entry superstarwannabe!

Just on a few points:
"He's a stranger to some" to me sounds like he's very famous. A celebrity would be a stranger to only a few people... (who live under rocks, or non-civilization)

"A vision to none" could either mean, no-one has any interest in him or his goals. He could be someone known to all but not cared by none.

I want to add:
"But he doesn't want to read the message" sounds like he's denying what the past is teaching him. Not everyone learns from their mistakes. History repeats itself thereafter. Perhaps he's and old, and he wants to bury the past.

Other interesting notes on WHO THIS IS:
-"He's a stranger to some" = Famous
-"For a fortune he'd quit" = He's not rich
-"On his face is a map of the world" = He's old or experienced or scarred
-"He'll decide when he's done with the innocent" = He's killed/allow death to many innocents
-"But he doesn't want to read the message here" = He's guilty and denying it.

So he's Famous, not rich, old/experienced/scarred, killed innocents and not proud. Trying to figure out who.

It can't be that little young emperor. Or it might be his reincarnation. I'm guessing it might be a famous warrior. Genghis Khan? If he had a conscience? Hey... it might even be an American soldier who accidentally killed innocent Iraqi civilians, though most of them aren't famous. George Bush? But he's kinda rich.
*shrugs*

Within Temptation – Memories Lyrics 19 years ago
MaverickX,
Perhaps "In silent memories imagine you here" means that memories are just subconscious intangible things that really have no sound or picture, and its these silent memories that transpose into the mental synthesis of imagination. Afterall, aren't memories are inside the mind anyway?

"Silent memories" to me seem more specific and poetic than "Inside my mind", which seems more normal & cliche. Besides, repetition is fairly normal in songs and poetry.

Westlife – You Raise Me Up Lyrics 19 years ago
Bridie, I dunno you or your dad, but you have my condolences. It must be very tough. I just realised that this song isn't necessarily a song to a lover, that it can refer to anyone in you're life who "Raises you up." He must've been an awesome dad.

It reminds me of that Celine Dion song "Because You Loved Me". The category of "You're so damn good to me" songs if there is such a category. This sounds like a song I want for my wedding.

This song is so simple yet so inspirational. Seriously, if you're asked to sing this on Australian or American Idol, and you forget for lines... give up. Simplicity and repetition and crescendo can be so effective. If you like this type of song, then check out "Tong Hua by Guang Liang" Its Chinese though, but similar principle.

Enya – May It Be Lyrics 20 years ago
Well spoken Evening-Star! I too feel that pressure. Though, since this song was written for LOTR, and makes reference to "Evening Star" which is an elvish artifact/item in the movie which Frodo has with him. The song is about Frodo's journey, and that its a "lonely road" because he soley bears the burden of the ring. The song seems to be written to Frodo whom when "darkness falls" and things go bad, and that his "heart be true" to persist under the evil influence of the ring. May he "journey on", even though he's "far away from home" (The Shire to Mordor). May he "journey on to light the day" to destroy the ring and bring peace to middle earth.

Daniel Powter – Bad Day Lyrics 20 years ago
There are 3 parties mentioned in this song, and we should identify these parties in order to make sense of the song. “They tell me your...” line makes reference to 3 parties: They, me and your, which also suggests that he himself is talking to a person and telling that person what other people perceive in that person. This line also rules out the possibility that “you/your” refers to the audience.

The video is nice and seems to match the word, except the line “You tell me don't lie” suggests that the artist is talking to a person. Prior to that, it seems like he’s using the word “you” in reference to talk to the audience to comfort us if we were having a bad day. Otherwise, how could “you tell me don’t lie” be us telling Daniel Powter that he’s lying?

Having established the parties and points of reference, I will analyse the meaning independent of the video clip. The artist is comforting a person’s sorrows, who seems to be denying his/her own sorrow, hiding it, and denying comfort from other people. He’s trying to make this person admit their sorrow and not bottle it up. “Love” is not mentioned in the whole song, so the relationship between the artist and the person is open to interpretation. It could be a best mate, it could be a girlfriend.

“They tell me your blue skies fade to grey
They tell me your passion's gone away
And I don't need no carryin' on”
The artist is telling a person that people notice he/she is feeling sad, and that he doesn’t need to continue repeating this because it’s evident.

“You're faking a smile with the coffee you go.”
“You sing a sad song just to turn it around”
“You work on a smile and you go for a ride”
The person is trying to hide their sorrows.

“You say you don't know
You tell me don't lie”
The sad person is denying knowledge of their sorrows. The next bit where that person is telling the artist “don’t lie” is a bit baffling, but I think the artist is saying this person’s a hypocrite because he/she is telling the artist not to lie when the person is lying to his face about his/her sorrow. The fact that the person is telling the artist not to lie, suggests that this person is female, or a girlfriend, because its more common that girls to say this to guys.

“The camera don't lie”
The evidence of her sorrow is in the photos/videos. Sad people often have a bitter smile or not at all, or just a long face.

The artist tries to make this person admit his/her (possibly her) sorrow, and is showing allot of understanding and compassion. Sometimes admitting one’s sorrow is the first step to recovery, instead of bottling it up.

Tonic – If You Could Only See Lyrics 20 years ago
What confuses people about this song is who the artist is referring to. He speaks in 1st person and makes reference to 3 parties, (I, you, she). There’s much ambiguity in his references.

There are a 5 main possible perspectives that I can see:
1) Speaking to a person about a girl, then speaking to that person directly. This implies that he’s comparing love between 2 girls, one fake and the other genuine.
2) Speaking to the audience (“you”) about a girl, then speaking to that girl (“you”). This implies that he’s describing to us about 1 girl who doesn’t love him genuinely, and how we’d only understand how fake it sounds if we hear it.
3) Speaking to a person (“you”) about a girl, then speaking to that girl (“you”). This implies there’s a 1 friend and 1 girl. He’s sharing to a person/friend about the horrible way this girl is treating him.
4) Speaking to a group (who doesn’t want them to be together) about a girl, then speaking to that girl (“you”). This implies there’s a group who rejects his relationship with this girl. He’s defending his relationship from these people who reject, but at the same time, telling the girl or the people that they don’t love him.
5) The mother (“you”) not wanting them to be together.

His use of “Our love.” could either be:
1)Love between him and the person
2)Love between him and the girl
X)Possibility of the audience is ruled out.

“The way that she loves me” could either be:
1)“She loves me in a bad way”
2)“She loves me in a good way.”

The distinction that must be made is whether the “you” refers to us, a fake lover, or a neutral party. Perspective #2-#5 are the most confusing, especially #4 which is highly illogical and contradictory, because they all make reference to 2 parties with 1 referent (you). He uses “Sayin' you love but you don't” which couldn’t possibly refer to a group of people, unless he’s twisting language in a peculiar/confusing way. Nor could it be his mother. Perspective #1 is the most straight forward, because each party is assigned 1 referent, and makes allot of sense if you play out the song as a drama in your head. “She” is subject of the sentence, so its normal that “our” refers to himself and “she”. Since the subject of the song is about “she” then “our” would be referring to himself and “she” also. “The way she loves me” is most likely to mean that “She loves me in a good way.” because he gives a negative example and says “your lies... your manipulations.”, and love is commonly used as a positive, otherwise the author could have used, “The way that she treats me.”. It’s more straightforward to draw contrast than force assigning negative meanings to everything (which is like making a picture all black, you need whites to create form in the image/meaning)

Having, established the points of reference, there are 4 main parts to the song.

1) “If you could only see the way... When she says she loves me.”
The guy is explaining to a current girlfriend (soon to be an ex) that there’s this another girl who truly loves him, which the current girlfriend is unable give genuinely. When her eyes get bluer, it means that she’s either very true or sad how he’s already with someone-else, or both. So what he must do is to break up with the current to be with his true love.

2) “Well you got your reasons... You give your love but you won't”
The guy explains to the current girlfriend that she lies and manipulates him for whatever reason, it hurts him. So when she says she love him, she doesn’t mean it, and doesn’t truly give it. For these reasons, it’s unlikely to be his mother. Why would a mother say she loves her son and not mean it? Or more importantly, why would a son compare a mother to a lover?

3) “Seems the road less travelled... That's what you gotta do.”
The choice he’s taking is an unlikely choice, which is tough, but he does it to keep true love. This choice maybe breaking up with current girlfriend, or going with the unlikely girlfriend who may be “the one”.

4) “Sayin' you love but you don't... Give your heart when you can.”
The current girlfriend says she loves but doesn’t, and doesn’t really give her love, and is trying to striving to love him when she doesn’t have real feelings for him. She says she loves even though she’s “standing” in the position of not really loving him, and only giving her time and affection when it suits her.

I understand allot of people feel personally towards this song, and can force these reference points to suit personal situations, and I respect that because connecting with a song, or hearing someone who experiences what you’re experiencing is comforting. I’m just trying to discern this song as accurately as I can according to logic and the English language.
