Conor Oberst – You Are Your Mother's Child Lyrics 11 years ago
Conor had this to say about this song in an interview with Billboard:

On "You Are Your Mother's Child," Oberst adopts the perspective of a rueful father, proud of his child's accomplishments despite his own shortcomings. "Although he's a bastard, make your papa proud/Cuz you're a fine young man, and I've got no doubt/That you're gonna do this better, because you are your mother's child."

"I definitely struggled with whether to put that one on the record," says Oberst of the song. "It has more sentimentality to it than any of the other songs, but I've seen a lot of friends go through that stuff. [Having kids] would be a cool thing to do someday. I don't particularly feel ready for it right now, but I guess no one ever does."

The reference to parallel lines is most likely connected to the song "Dog Problems"

Luke Bryan – Rain Is a Good Thing Lyrics 15 years ago
Where I come from rain is a good thing...

and I'm not from the country.

In few places, except the ocean, is rain not a good thing. It's just a matter of recognizing its value.

Also, is the best reason why rain is important really "whiskey" and seducing young female. I'm sure there are more important reasons for rain but perhaps I'm just not drunk enough to realize the value of whiskey at the moment.

p.s. I only speak so harshly of the song because it is stuck in my head right now, this is my way of getting back.

Bright Eyes – I Know You Lyrics 15 years ago
I'm not sure if this is part 2 of the song on the same album "Happy Accident" but if so then that individual that preferred the innocence of youth and the idea that you can find "true love" can be linked to this individual's belief that someone could be perfect.

Also, like the previous song the idea that your past is something that will haunt you throughout your life and that you need to "accept your fate" because the world is not smooth like marble. In this song perhaps Connor is suggesting that even if you have dreams of running away, becoming some fantasy character from the past, or doing something completely new that you can not sweep your past under the rug - you must confront it.

Monsters of Folk – Magic Marker Lyrics 16 years ago
Mike Mogis said the following about this song:

I know [Jim] talked about this and I cant quite remember, so I don't want to put words in his mouth, but I think it dealt with a human condition kind of thing, getting to the heart of something basically. It has this kind of similar sentiment to some of the other songs that deal with a question and the human condition, like this constant need for things and yearning and searching for stuff. And the Tootsie Pop reference is one of those things: getting to the prize, what do you have to do to get to that point.

Monsters of Folk – Goodway Lyrics 16 years ago
The following is a quote from Mogis on the sound and inspiration for this song:

The song actually did have a verse and a chorus and totally different vocal parts. That was a song Matt brought to the table and he didn't really like it. That was the one where everyone actually sang on all the verses. They were actually Matt's lyrics, but he never liked the song, I think. That's my personal opinion. When it started out it sounded like another M. Ward song – it was worked on for "Hold Time." We tried the, how about you sing a verse, you sing a verse and maybe it will sound different. We tried it and it sounded all right to me, but it didn't sound great. So he was like, "Why don't we make it a segue and do this weird "Goodway" thing, one repetition of the chorus, then be done with it." We worked on that for a minute then it ended up being three repetitions of the "Goodway" chorus, then two guitar solos, and then Conor wanted to do a spoken-word thing over it. And in true Monsters of Folk fashion, we said, "Oh, of course – that makes sense."

The spoken word thing ties into some of these themes of the record, but it was a letter that was found. I don't want to get into it because its supposed to remain anonymous. It wasn't anything that we actually wrote. We thought it's so funny because it ties into these yearning, searching type things, and then Conor read it. And it's all weird. So that's how we left it, like "Oh, that's uncomfortable."

Paul Baribeau – Christmas Lights Lyrics 17 years ago
This reminds me of coming home from college for Christmas.

"even though I'm home now
I feel completely homeless"

I wasn't going to do this but I must inflict a Garden State quote upon you all. I'm sorry, I couldn't resit...

"You know that point in your life when you realize that the house that you grew up in isn't really your home anymore? All of the sudden even though you have some place where you can put your stuff that idea of home is gone."

"You'll see when you move out it just sort of happens one day one day and it's just gone. And you can never get it back. It's like you get homesick for a place that doesn't exist. I mean it's like this rite of passage, you know. You won't have this feeling again until you create a new idea of home for yourself, you know, for your kids, for the family you start, it's like a cycle or something. I miss the idea of it. Maybe that's all family really is. A group of people who miss the same imaginary place."

I warned you!

Bright Eyes – Pioneer's Park Lyrics 17 years ago
Supposedly this song is about the first time Conor had sex. I think you are spot on with the date.

Lines like the ones bellow seem to suggest that this is a song about his experiences after losing his virginity:
"Such a perfect day and unexplainable new feeling," "Entwined," "With pleasure thick and sticking to the air."

What a great song!

Plainly stated: "love just isn't easy"

If you stick to your gut ("what's real") that will be the best guidance.

Conor Oberst – Milk Thistle Lyrics 17 years ago
This was in a interview with Conor about the slightly religious aspect of this song in Paste Magazine (http://www.pastemagazine.com/high_gravity/2008/07/conor-oberst-on-religion-and-politics.html):

_______________Article:_______________
One of the songs on the album, "Milk Thistle," contains the lines "If I go to heaven / I'll be bored as hell /like a little baby / at the bottom of a well." I asked him about that song.

“Well, I guess it’s, to me, you know, pretty much commonsense. You can only really understand good if you have bad, so the idea of heaven or anything that happens for eternity, even if it’s nice, I can’t imagine it being nice forever. Even the idea of forever is kind of ridiculous, which is unfortunate because it’s kind of a nice thing to say, you know. I think it softens the blow of mortality and having to say goodbye to everything you know and everyone you love and all that kind of thing. I think it’s a nice concept, and I wish it made sense to me, but I guess it doesn’t.”

Conor Oberst – Danny Callahan Lyrics 17 years ago
This was published in "The Independent" on July 18, 2008.

----Article---
His songs can be touchingly compassionate, and it takes skill to honour the life of a child cancer patient with the kind of grace and surety Oberst manages on the new song "Danny Callahan".

"I was walking to this liquor store and pharmacy in Nebraska with a friend of mine," he recalls when asked about the song. "Suddenly, she was like, 'Oh my God! Look at that old man sitting in that car, look at how small he is!' Of course, when we got closer we realized it was actually a little boy. It turned out he was waiting in line with his mom to get medicine, and we were there to buy vodka or something. My friend started crying, and we just went home.

"It was just one of those life experiences that begs to be written about. It's partly about Danny, but it's also about whether or not you can transmit your experience of love to another person and whether that message remains intact when it arrives."

Erin Regan – Your Mom's Car Lyrics 17 years ago
Miss. Regan blends (in classic Anti-Folk style) the ordinary aspect of life (Mickey D's) while at the same time keeping the seriousness of the song.

The broken love triangle of the song is the primary conflict in the song. The "ride in your mom's car" is the desperate attempt to hold onto that which the narrator can not hold back.

Never-the-less this song pulls at the heart strings.

*Bravo Erin*

Susannah Mccorkle – The People That You Never Get to Love Lyrics 18 years ago
The song itself is self-explanatory but just for the sake of repetitiveness I will repeat the message. The song pulls at the "awkward" feeling associated with seeing that man/women that you would have interest in.

Overall I believe that she is urging the listener to take that chance in a relationship. As she put it "you'll never going to miss what you don't know".

Nine Days – Revolve Lyrics 18 years ago
People need to stop thinking literally about this song.

Obviously the song is addressing a woman that he wants to be with. Much of the song deals with time being lost ("fading" and whatnot) but even as he may be emotionally losing her, he continues to show his love and is trying to tell her that he will continue to get better for her.

Overall it is a way of saying: "I love you, stay with me, we are only going to get better".

Daphne Loves Derby – That's Our Hero Shot Lyrics 18 years ago
Personally, I believe that the speaker is putting himself down because he feels that he has let himself and others down.

The dance could be looked at metaphorically as him way of tricking others. Perhaps it is not the speaker who he is blaming but he is ashamed of himself (when in reference to his mother).

"The guilt from the necks you bite into" would support the idea that this person has used/lied other people for their benefit.

What I found ironic was that he mention at the end that he would burn the city down "so no one will be here to hold my hands", but at the start of the songs he says "Take my hands". He is either conflicted or angry at those around him.

I'm Vegan and I totally agree with this song.

I don't try to push my habits onto others. If you feel like this is the right thing to do, then by all means do it. It's a personal choice and no one should tell you how to live but make sure that you get the facts before you make your choice.

To NeverOutgunned: We all choose how much effort we want to put into the things that we try to improve. You can only do so much. Don't critize people for doing what they beleive.

Just let people do what they want to do. I don't tell other people how to live their life and would want that same respect from other people.

I really like this song. I see it as getting away from your past and going to better places, together.

Naturally, he is from New York so he is also going to write about that but I think it is also deeper then that. Even the lyrics that don't make sense are put together so nicely. It is just such a nice song, has to be one of my fav's.

Someone didn't know what this meant:

"Well I'm not a child, no I am much younger than that"

I don't really know but have you heard what they say about you are the smartest when you are born? I think he is saying that he doesn't belevie in all of these things that society has tried to push upon him. People say children are not affected by these things but they still have some ideas pressed upon them. I think that by being younger then a child, he is pure, unaltered.

Just my spin on it.
