The Decemberists – O New England Lyrics 16 years ago
FACT: The line is definitely "And all I got is this ill-gotten, full-colour souvenir" :D

I've heard him tell this story at least twice now - the souvenir was a glossy booklet from the gift shop of the Empire State Building.

Bob Dylan – All I Really Want to Do Lyrics 18 years ago
This song is from the period when he was dating Joan Baez, no? I think it's definitely about her.

They Might Be Giants – Snail Shell Lyrics 19 years ago
This is a very literal song. It's about a little snail who fell out of its shell, but was rescued by a human who helped the little guy back into his shell. The snail is thankful to have been rescued and wonders why the person helped it and if it can repay the person.

There are also cute references to the fact that the snail is baffled by its rescuer: "sir hand or is it ma'am?" - the snail can't tell the gender of its rescuer, it can really only make out the hand; "How may I give you a hand from the position at your feet where I stand" - the snail is tiny and can barely come up to its rescuers feet but is still grateful.

Jet – Look What You've Done Lyrics 20 years ago
It's about John's disillusionment with the Maharishi, y'know.
