| Hootie & the Blowfish – Sad Caper Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| I agree with Douglas. It's about someone who enjoys being unhappy and making those around them unhappy. "Misery loves company" kind of thing. This may be my favorite of all of Hootie and the Blowfish's songs. | |
| The Ditty Bops – Fall Awake Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| Sounds like she fell for a man that's significantly older than she is and she's explaining why it's not as morally incorrect as society makes it seem. | |
| Toad the Wet Sprocket – Know Me Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| This is a very powerful song. Sounds like it's about a child who is sick of being seen as meek, childish, and helpless. Toad did a great job on this one. | |
| Deadeye Dick – New Age Girl Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| I'd say Deathsdoor is right. It's about the "good girl". She's smart and well-behaved on the outside. But deep down, she's very lustful. She's the stereotypical quiet girl with a hidden wild side. | |
| Polaris – Summerbaby Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| They changed the lyrics for the episode of Pete and Pete that this song appeared on. They replaced "Every drop of sex" with "Every time I guess." So even if it is about masturbation, the meaning was hidden well for the show. | |

| Iron & Wine – Each Coming Night Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
Will you say to me when I'm gone "Your face has faded but lingers on Because light strikes a deal with each coming night" My translation: Will you say to me when I'm gone "You've passed, and I've learned to accept that Because time is going to go on any way I look at it." |

| Joe Pisapia – River Song Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| He's singing about how a river continues to flow, no matter what's going on. He wishes life was that easy and wants to be able to let things go as easily as a river could. | |
| Joe Pisapia – River Song Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| He's singing about how a river continues to flow, no matter what's going on. He wishes life was that easy and wants to be able to let things go as easily as a river could. | |
| Guster – Come Downstairs And Say Hello Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
"One last time these words from me, I'm never saying them again. And I shut the light, and listen as my watch unwinds" I like how he's saying that he's going to change, very soon, but then contradicts himself by going to bed and listen as time ticks on by. |

| Crooked Fingers – You Can Never Leave Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| Roccer, your taste lies in bad music. | |
| Barenaked Ladies – Testing 1,2,3 Lyrics | 20 years ago |
|
I'm going to agree with wrion. It's got to be about Ed Robertson wanting to move on from his past. The Barenaked Ladies have very much changed their sound since Maroon. So he's saying that he wants to, sort of, leave the old days behind and try something new. But he'd also like to go back and redo some of the things he'd done. Awesome song. |
|
| The Shins – Pressed In A Book Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| It seems like he's trying to drive a girl into liking him. But he keeps on pushing her and pushing her only to be let down every time. The last verse does well to describe it. He's using all of these poetic lines to try to win her over, but he knows she's only going to turn him down again ("I know when you hear these sappy lines/You'll roll your eyes and say 'Nice try'"). | |
| Toad the Wet Sprocket – Are We Afraid Lyrics | 20 years ago |
|
It seems like it's about two people who've done something they weren't supposed to and now they're feeling the guilt set in. The narrator didn't want to take part in it at first, but by the end of the song ("And are we ashamed/ Coming here in the black dark night/and I don't feel so strange?), he's shrugged off that reluctance. If I were to put in terms of a relationship, I'd say it's about a guy and a girl who are seeing each other, even though it's been forbidden. |
|
| Toad the Wet Sprocket – Stupid Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| Yeah. I recently read that it was based on some humiliating experience that Glen Phillips went through. Though, it didn't go into specifics. | |
| The Shins – We Will Become Silhouettes (Postal Service cover) Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| This version is so much better than the original. The Postal Service's original version seems too boring to me. Plus, The Shins' played it to sound happier, making it a more contradictory, and thus, more interesting song. | |
| Blues Traveler – Amber Awaits Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| The narrator is saying that Amber is out of his league. He wants to know if she would ever give him the time of day. | |
| Guster – I Spy Lyrics | 20 years ago |
|
May Day Riots of 1919? The lyrics conicidentally correspond very well with this event. I'm not saying this is what I think it's about, but it would make sense. In 1919, Eugene V. Debs was arrested. Charles Ruthenberg organized a protest parade, consisting of unionists, socialists, anarchists, and, most fitting to the song, communists. The "parade" took place on May 1, 1919 (May Day). This would make it during the time of the first Red Scare in the US. Or maybe I just dug too far into it. The scarlet letter thing fits too. |
|
| Toad the Wet Sprocket – Torn Lyrics | 20 years ago |
|
"And on that note, this is the clinical depression song." -Glen Phillips, right off of track 7 (Butterflies) on Toad's "Welcome Home: Live at the Arlington" album. |
|
| Toad the Wet Sprocket – Way Away Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| I think it's about a dead person and their funeral guests. The deceased is listening to what everyone is saying, noticing that no one is overly upset. They want to cry at the end of the song and hope that their life wasn't put to waste. | |
| Men at Work – Who Can It Be Now? Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| Colin Hay released a more recent version of this song on his album "Man at Work". It's an acoustic rendition. I prefer it over the original. Give it a listen, if you get the chance. | |
| Barenaked Ladies – The Humour Of The Situation Lyrics | 20 years ago |
|
Wow. I just got the part about the henhouse. Have you heard the one about the boy Who moved in to the henhouse to sleep? [This is him; he went over her place for sex, I would guess] He woke up with egg on his face When he found out all the hens had crossed the street [He woke up, surprised to find that she'd left.] As I walked out, I thought about all I had left behind me I felt a chill because I was still Wearing the emperor's new clothes [He realizes that she'd stolen his clothes and left with them, leaving him stranded, in "the Emperor's new clothes," or nude.] My mind was racing with each chance that I had missed While your next door neighbour soaked me with the hose I've never felt so small, I've never been so dissed [This part, and I'm guessing here, might be an example of "shrinkage". You know, when certain things get smaller when they're doused with cold water.] |
|
| Toad the Wet Sprocket – Hold Her Down Lyrics | 20 years ago |
|
I love this song. The way it sounds, what it means, everything. "And I Would have a hard time facing you. This crime; The shame of what a man can do. I want to die For all the Hell that you've been through." Brilliance, to say the least. |
|
| Toad the Wet Sprocket – Walk On The Ocean Lyrics | 20 years ago |
|
Toad is not emo. Emo is not a style of music so much as it is a trend. "Emo music" is punk/hardcore punk music with depressing lyrics. But the whole emo thing in itself is a trend. It's a clothing style and a reason for young people to think they hate themselves. Toad doesn't write about cutting. Toad writes about break-ups, yes, but not about crying and never getting over it for the rest of their life. They write about how the break-up has made them realize things. Things that would make you feel stronger, not more depressed. Anyways, Walk on the Ocean, I think is about a very short vacation. Maybe about a couple, or just a group of friends. They go to some ocean-side resort or something along those lines and stay for just a little while. They meet people there and they all have a great time. Upon leaving they say they'd "send letters and all of those little things". But they lied about it. The song is about meeting new people and not staying in touch, like they said they would. |
|
| Body Count – DRIVE BY Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| Looks like a pretty horrible song, judging by the lyrics. | |
| Men at Work – Overkill Lyrics | 20 years ago |
|
Lazlo Bane covered the song and Colin Hay sang the last verse. It sounds great. Lazlo Bane slowed it down and changed the sound quite a bit from the way Men at Work had originally played it. But they managed to do it without disgracing the song. I think the schizophrenia thing could be right. It's hit the point where he's having trouble sleeping and now he's even noticing that he's lonely ("Alone between the sheets; Only brings exasperation."). |
|
| Toad the Wet Sprocket – One Little Girl Lyrics | 20 years ago |
|
Sad song. I don't fully understand it though... It sounds like the girl and the boy have known each other for quite some time, but the boy decides to turn on her and treat her like dirt. What I like about this song is the use of the word 'little'. When referring to the girl, it's used to mean frail and defenseless. But when it's used to describe the man, its meaning changes to mean weak and disrespectful. I also like the way the music sounds. It's got that angry sound that makes you hate the "one little boyl". |
|
| Toad the Wet Sprocket – Little Man, Big Man Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| He's basically asking if man is really progressing; if mankind as a whole is getting better or worse. At least, that's what I think. | |
| Toad the Wet Sprocket – Brother Lyrics | 20 years ago |
|
On "Welcome Home: Live at the Arlington Theatre, Santa Barbara, 1992" Glen says this song is about his own brother. It's at the end of The Nightingale Song's track: "I don't think I ever used the term 'I love you' in a song until I wrote about a man. This is about my brother because I love my brother. So there you go." So, there you go. |
|
| Toad the Wet Sprocket – Rings Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| I read somewhere that Glen wrote this song around the time of his birthday. I suppose looking back on his life gave him inspiration to write from the point of view of a tree. | |
| Toad the Wet Sprocket – All I Want Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| I think the "air outside so soft" that is "saying everything" is referring to rumors. The two lie to each other, even though they're in love. He doesn't give a damn about what anyone says. Or about what she's not saying. He just wants to feel the way he does about her. | |
| Toad the Wet Sprocket – So Alive Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| Sex? | |
| Blues Traveler – Just For Me Lyrics | 20 years ago |
|
I found that 1 4 5 is a guitar chord. Just another one four five about as cute as can be And danceable but I don't really care I was just glad I'm alive and I had nothing else to do And besides the beat was already there [He wrote a catchy song because he felt like it. He knows it wasn’t well-written, but he “doesn’t really care”.] Oh that's right, no it wasn't me, I didn't do it Say what you will but you can't blame a thing on me And really even if you could I said I couldn't care less Not now not today this morning you got me feeling free [People tell him writing the song was a bad idea, but he wrote it out of his own good mood.] Yeah just me This one's, this one's just for me Yeah, yeah just me Some things, some things are just for me [Emphasizing that the song was written just for him. Not for a reason other than just because he wanted to.] I swear to god I took a walk and it occurred to me while I was outside That if I was looking for a miracle I might do well to look up to the sky The dawn breaking open the day you'd say that it was blinding me But still I had to stop right there and wonder why Now I know for certain cause I've been around That the sun shines every day even though you might not get to see No matter who no matter where no matter weather permitting The miracle is that sometimes it can burn just for you [He comes to the realization that things will always have a bright side. Even if you can’t see it, it’s there, waiting to show its face. It inspired him to write the song.] ...Or just me Oh this one's burning just for me Yeah, yeah, yeah me Some things, some things are just for me [Like the last chorus, it’s emphasizing that the song is just for him.] I wrote the editor for some news print shots But he just sent me some old forget-me-nots And this ain't Vegas but I've played the slots So I figure on dropping one coin in And some old Seminole yelled look out below You know long ago they wouldn't let him go But now they're laying low in Idaho And so Geronimo, he finally gets to win [I couldn’t figure this part out, which leads me to believe that my interpretation could be completely wrong.] ...Or lose, who cares about news We all live and schmooze as we choose The effort's always in the details I've put in my time I bump and grind and rise and shine I whine and whine and pine and ache like everybody else [He’s spend as much time as everyone else whining and complaining about nothing, but realized that it’s all for naught.] Yeah me This one's, this one's just for me Yeah, yeah, yeah me Some things, some things are just for me Yeah, yeah, yeah me This one's, this one's just for me Yeah me Some things, some things are just for me Just another one four five about as cute as can be And danceable but I don't really care. |

| The Shins – They'll Soon Discover Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| Only The Shins could make a song about a cartoon character and actually make it sound good. | |
| Toad the Wet Sprocket – Stupid Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| I love this song. Sounds to me like it's about a guy (the narrator) who's been working on finishing up his house with this other guy. And it just so happens that this other guy has been with the narrator's lady. He's singing about how he didn't notice until later that they had been together, thus making him feel "really stupid now". | |
| The Shins – Kissing the Lipless Lyrics | 20 years ago |
|
The fold-out inside "Chutes Too Narrow" reads: "You tested your metal of doe's skin and petals..." Officially, it isn't mettle. Unless The Shins wrote the wrong word on purpose in the fold-out, or unless they meant to use it in both spellings. |
|
| The Presidents of the United States of America – Some Postman Lyrics | 20 years ago |
|
I think that line in the last verse (with the question marks) should be "Stole, and sold and ripped apart" Excellent song. |
|
| Toad the Wet Sprocket – Chicken Lyrics | 20 years ago |
|
Sounds like it's about a coward to me. He's singing about how the "Chicken" is always making excuses to get out of doing things. And he just keeps things as simple as he can without 'leaving the cages' or 'questioning nature'. But the second verse sounds like an entirely different person. Someone who has faith and is more of a leader than a follower. I don't understand this song too well. |
|
| Toad the Wet Sprocket – All In All Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| I love the way this song sounds. I'm not sure of the meaning, but it sounds like he's waiting for something and time feels like it's going by very slowly. And even though he's having a hard time taking the waiting, the tells himself that he can wait until the end of the song ("But I can't wait"). But what's he waiting for? | |
| Iron & Wine – Free Until They Cut Me Down Lyrics | 20 years ago |
|
Is he singing about being hung for murder? Sounds sort of like a woman told him to kill her ("Take me home"). So he killed her and is being executed for doing so. My interperetation might very well be incorrect. Please, correct me if I'm wrong. Great song, nevertheless. |
|
| Iron & Wine – Radio War Lyrics | 20 years ago |
|
I concur. This is my favorite song by Iron and Wine. I was surprised when I found that nobody had posted the lyrics. The only problem with this song is that it's too short. "All the while that she wept She'd a gun by her bed And the letter he wrote From a dry, foundered boat." I like that verse. It seems she was considering suicide. It also mentioned her drinking wine in the first verse and making her dream of things. So she was trying to drink her problems away, I guess. It's a very sad song. But beautifully constructed. |
|
| Barenaked Ladies – It's All Been Done Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| I'm pretty sure in the Disc One booklet, they say that they just wanted to write a song using "woo hoo hoo". So it was in "It's All Been Done". | |
| Blues Traveler – Just For Me Lyrics | 20 years ago |
|
Damn, no comments. "Just another one four five about as cute as can be And danceable but I don't really care" What does that mean? |
|
| The Shins – Kissing the Lipless Lyrics | 20 years ago |
|
It seems like you guys are missing the meaning of the word ‘metal’. I think, in this case, the word ‘metal’ is referring to ship ammunition. The weight of all the projectiles that a ship’s guns can fire is called its metal. Ammunition is used to kill. Doeskin and petals are very delicate. They contradict each other. It seems like the girl in the song is almost yelling at the singer, but he knows she doesn’t mean any of it. So: You tested your metal {{She’s yelling at him; her words are like cannon fire}} Of doeskin and petals {{But she can‘t bring herself to hurt him}} While kissing the lipless {{While there with her current boyfriend}} Who bleed all the sweetness away {{Who doesn‘t really love the girl the way he should}} That's my two cents. I'm not sure of its validity. |
|
| Prince – When Doves Cry Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| Haha. I heard a cover of this song done by the Barenaked Ladies. It was really good. I haven't heard the original, actually. I also heard it in Romeo and Juliet. That made me laugh a bit. Because the church choir sang it. | |
| Hootie & the Blowfish – I Go Blind Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| Jacqualine, I like the way you copied that nearly word-for-word out of the Scattered, Smothered and Covered booklet. The "life of its own" part caught my eye. | |
| Hootie & the Blowfish – I Hope That I Don't Fall In Love With You Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| It's actually written on Scattered, Smothered, and Covered case "I Hope That I Don't Fall In Love With You." Hootie and the Blowfish had played on tv, and that did this song. They put it on Scattered, Smothered, and Covered, but, even though they'd said in the show that it was called "Closing Time", the cd reads "I Hope that I Don't Fall in Love with You". | |
| Ted Leo and the Pharmacists – Me and Mia Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| Has anyone seen the video for this song? It's kind of strange. I don't fully understand it. It shows the band playing in an apartment above a diner from a camera outside. A little ways into the song, a taxi pulls up and a second Ted Leo walks out, wearing different clothes. He goes up to the apartment and the first Ted Leo goes down to the diner to grab a bite to eat. And it shows him eating for about five seconds before the video comes to a close. I think they were just trying to add irony to it by showing him eating greasy food that you'd buy at a diner. Maybe? | |
